Layerd – Ludum Dare and beyond (maybe?)

This is the first time I participated in LD, so I’m pretty excited about everything, including the voting phase.

Being in western europe, the theme announcement came at 2am, so I was worried that I’d miss precious time. I woke up at 4.30, read the theme on twitter while still in bed and went back to sleep to let my brain do the hard work! 😀 Woke up 2 hours later and in 30min of brainstorming I came up with what seemed a cool idea for a game: Layerd

I started working after breakfast (around 8.30), and during the first day I only stopped to cook, eat and meditate (things I can’t miss :). Most of the day was spent coding and brainstorming the ideas. The second day I improved the artwork, did the background music and finished the puzzles.

I had plenty of ideas that unfortunately I could not include in the game due to time constraints, from 100 steps I had to come down to only 50 steps. But between that or having no sounds, music or a lousy mood, I preferred to cut back and look it this is a tech-demo 😛

Funny thing was, as I was coding and play testing the game, I actually thought this could turn out to be a “full” game after LD, since the mechanic is really nice (sorry but you won’t get it by looking at screenshots, give it a real try 😉 )

Many comments I received point me in the same direction, so I’m really considering putting more time into it to turn it into a real game.. but I’m still undecided. What do you think? :) My plan was to develop a custom map editor that could create custom levels for the game’s mechanics, and maybe have people also create their own levels and share around online. I guess I still need some words of encouragement to put my time on this, not sure if it will be worth it…

Layerd – My platformer with a twist

Hi everyone!

So I took up the theme to develop a puzzle platformer with a twist. Its in 2d but I use “game progress” as a special 3rd dimension, so the map changes as you move back and forth.

Quite hard to come up with the level I must say 😀
