Before anything else I would like to thank everyone who played my game! This was my first Ludum Dare and it was worth it!

Into the Universe: My first LD game

Since this was my first Ludum Dare I knew from the beginning that I have to make something very simple, just to be sure that I can finish everything in time. I was originally aiming for the Compo, but I ended up in Jam, because my final game turned out to be a bit more complex. When I look back I think it is better to submit finished game in 72 hours rather than unfinished in 48.

With Into the Universe my main goal was to create simple strategic game – I really like the gendre of simple strategic/rogue games like FTL so I decided to do something like it, in a way.

What went wrong

One thing that I really struggled with was time. Making a game all alone is hard but it is doable when you plan in the right way. I unfortunately spent so much time on procedural solar system generation and planet stuff that I did not have time to implement proper fighting or even usage of the planets themselves. Because of this I did not have time to balance the game in the end either, so some games might be very easy and some very hard.

If it’s broken, I won’t fix it

Two things in the game are totally bad! Sound effects were added literally 5 minutes before the deadline (and I don’t mean the deadline with 1 hour to submit, I mean the end end deadline). Same goes for the fighting. Even though it was added this late in the process it still works, well, kind of… Fighting is really bad because it is repetitive and there is no feedback other than weird sound effect and there is also one BUG when if the AI kills you, the blowing up sound plays forever (sorry about blowing up your head).
Overall things are broken in this game, but they are not game breaking! What I really like about Ludum Dare is that the time is limited and I don’t want to fix these issues, because it is my fault as a creator that they exist. I had limited time and the game is what it is and you all should play the game that was really created in 72 hours.

What went right

One thing I’m really happy about is the whole game concept. I like it a lot! What I really like is the fact that the game can be played for quite a long time and it still can be fun. And even though I spent too much time working on the planets I really like the feel of randomly generated solar system and the feel of the whole game. I’m really happy about the music too.

Future of this game

All in all I’m really happy about my game and I accept all the feedback comments from you guys. Thank you very much for them, because knowing that you played my game just makes me smile every time I play it!
I plan to work more on this game in the future – basicly rewriting it altogether. I think the idea behind it is very cool and definitely is worth exploring.

#4 Update: I FINISHED the game! !

Hey everyone! So my first Ludum Dare wasn’t a complete bust! Even though I missed the Compo, I managed to complete my game for the Jam. Loooong hours of programming and debugging are behind me and many more are ahead. I’m so tired that I’m not able to sleep… 😀
Anyway I would like to share my final game with you. My game description on the submit page still needs some work though so I’ll probably make a video later.It was my first Ludum Dare and overall great experience!
The game I created is actually quite simple – I just spent too much time playing around with nonessential stuff. Main goal of the game is to collect “Scrap” from various planets. You are limited by the time spend in each Solar system. You have to spend there exactly half the time and if you spend too much time, you are going to blow up. Main mechanic is TIME controll. Everything moves only when the time moves. So sending slow scouting ship to outer planet will probably cost you one person, because the ship will either jump on time or blow up. You can pause the game at will. To make it a challenge there are enemy ships – you can target only one at a time. (After submitting I realised that the enemy ships are waaay underpowerd. So there is not much challenge, sadly :( ).

Game features fully randomly generated solar system each time. Each planet has 6 types of biomes and two major ones are considered for resource calculations. In addition each planet has individual orbit and rotation speed. There are 6  classes of Stars and planet distribution in system is done according to the class of the Sun.
Sadly there was not enough time to balance whole game and use this cool looking star system fully. Also fighting does not have visuals (only audio) and game is missing tutorial which will probably make it unplayable for anyone who hates reading.

Anyway, quite a long post. Thank you very much for this competition. Now I’m stoked to play all the wonderful games you all created!
Also I’ll be happy for any feedback positive or negative, doesn’t matter, I just want you to try and play my game! (LINK!)

#3 Update: Ok, Jam it is

Hey everyone! I’m a bit frustrated right now seeing all the finished games and I’m stuck few hours behind. :( I’m officially bailing on compo.
In better news I can share with you a bit of progress.
I’m still missing combat, transitions, SoundFX, music, menu and tutorial. I hope that I will finish it by tomorrow!
BTW I’ve seen some really cool games here! Great work everyone!

#2 Update: Still a LOT to do

Hey guys, how you doing during the second day of compo? My progress was really slow, but I’m getting there! Worked on some graphics a little, but I still have to implement huge part of gameplay logic. Not much time to eat or sleep.

#1 Update: Ancient Technology

Hey there, this is my first update. I’m a bit behind and everything takes a bit longer than I expected. :/ On the other hand I can share my first update with you:

Procedurally generated solar system. I probably shouldn’t have spent so much time on it, but I’m pleased with the result.
Now onto the anctient technology stuff.

This is going to be my first ever Ludum Dare and I’m stoked!

My weapons of choice:

  • Engine: Unity3D (C#) or Game Maker: Studio
  • Graphics: Blender, Photoshop, Paint.NET, AAE
  • Music: Garageband, BFXR

Final themes look really nice! Now we just have to wait for the start!
