Well, I’ve got the programmer equivalent of writer’s block. Nothing is coming together. I think this might be first LD I’ve started and not submitted anything.

Well, the risk with starting from scratch is spending a ton of time getting to where you can do anything at all.

And I totally just did that. :(

But now I have a hello world here. It is literally a Hello World written in Typescript. But it there’s also a unit test system, as well as local and remote deployment.

Lesson of the past 3 or so hours? Don’t try and use the exact same build setup for your test runner as your deployment. They’re not the same! Don’t bother! The fruits of my struggle are here.

I’m in for LD37. Like LD36 entry, it’ll be from scratch. I thought about using the SpringRoll framework, but I didn’t find a quick way to jump in. I’ve been playing around with iDS-10 on my iPad, so I might do SFX and music with it. We’ll see.

Engine: none!

Language: Typescript!

Graphics: Hand-drawn and scanned or drawn on my iPad! Maybe just no art at all!

Sound and Music: STRETCH GOAL! iDS-10, and then edited in Audacity or GarageBand, which ever works easiest.

This go round I’ll be working with Phaser/Typescript to make a platformer.  Everyone on the team is stretching themselves to try something  new.

My personal challenge is to do all the graphic art, music, and SFX… Which is going to be fun because I’m neither an artist or a musician! I wanted to try something different this time.

Mike will be doing the programming, and while he’s a programmer by trade, he’s only done the tutorial of Phaser. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

Our third team member is a heavy Unity user, but that won’t help here because there’s no C# or IDE to be found.

We might need some help so we have a few other guys who might show up to give a hand… We’ll see what sort of unfamiliar thing we can foist on them. 😉

I’ll be doing a solo project this time.

It’s an almost empty Unity 5 project and includes two bash scripts for making builds and deploying them to a web server. You might find it useful as a starting point too!

I’ll not be using any other frameworks or plugins.  I might end up writing a quick unit test thing though.


  • Unity 5
  • MonoDevelop
  • vim
  • Graphics will be colored quads in the Solarized palette.
  • Sound FX will be made on cfxr.
  • Music will be from Autotracker and converted to MP3 using VLC.

Stretch Goals  😉

  • Draw sprites and backgrounds on my iPad in Sketchbook, transfer the files to my Mac, cut and trim them with Preview, and then import them to Unity
  • Write a version of the BASIC PLAY() command and think up some tunes, or just make a random pentatonic “music” generator.

I was pretty sure I was going to miss this one, but I decided to give it a go.  It might be less 48 hours and more like 12 hours, but it was eating me up to miss it.

It’ll be completely from scratch, so nothing to declare.  I’ll be using Unity, sfxr, and maybe I’ll doodle up a song on my Nintendo DS using Korg DS10.   Graphics are going to be the most glorious of programmer art.

I am going to try to actually have a ‘real color pallet’ at least.  There are a few on OpenGameArt.

I’ve got some levels and puzzles drawn up, but with no content creation tools, its a lot of very tedious data-entry style coding.  I don’t think I’ll get all the content I want into the game before the deadline. :(

But here’s a test build!  Totally playable, and feature complete as far as this LD is concerned.  The worst bug still in there is just the terrible word wrapping code.  This build is essentially the “tutorial” portion of the game.

I’ve not had as much time as I’d have liked to work on this so far… I didn’t even get started till noon today.  But I’ve got a simple text adventure game engine with navigation and simple puzzles.

The content is all place-holder, and the command parser is super strict.   I also don’t have any mobs/entities.  So the goal tonight is to fix those three things:

  1. Mob/entities that roam the rooms
  2. More forgiving command parser (“n” == “north”, “get key” == “get skull key”, etc)
  3. A decent level/story design >_>

And for theme?  You Only Get One Inventory slot.  :)

This will be my first LD.  I’m starting small: just a text adventure, though I hope to add sound and music.

Tools: Unity/C#, sfxr or equiv, Gimp for any incidental gfx

If I get to music, I’d record me playing keyboard in Garage Band.

Goal: Finish the game; have a reasonable amount of game play

Constraints: I’m not going to be able to start until Saturday, so it won’t be a full 48 hours.
