Trip of doom

Perfect! My second time at Ludum Dare and the second time I could finish a game for the compo! And this time it might even be fun to play!

I started off a bit slow, because I risked to try something out I never did before… character animation, but I think it worked out quite well.

I also never made such highly detailed models before, so it was quite a challenge! Especially those complex trees… But seriously, last time I spent all the time with modelling and texturing. I ended up having something that wasn’t even a game and looked worse than the low-poly, single-colored destruction madness I made this time.

I think I’ll write a post-mortem post tomorrow, but I’m just too tired today (although I slept quite much this weekend.. I took the whole thing quite easy).

My first time in Ludum Dare went surprisingly well, I still had to skip some major ideas and lots of gameplay, but at least I finished it.

What went right:

  • 3D modeling with Blender: I have some months of experience with blender in game development and have been using it before that for experiments and stuff like that… I realle had no problems with that!
  • Programming: Actually this game wasn’t very much programming work… the modeling was the really time consuming part.
  • Sound and texture creating: Both aren’t really beautiful… But I think they are quit good if you consider the fact that I made them entirely from scratch! 😀
  • Overall style of the game: It worked out to be nearly as I wanted it to be.
What went wrong:
  • Gameplay: You can’t really call it gameplay… It is more like “Throw the easiest Legend of Zelda quests and a primitive jump and run into a bottle and mix it with a crazy style”. I wanted to make MUCH more gameplay,                                like flying buzzsaws, moving platforms… and at least on puzzle at the difficulty level of the Ocarina of Time water temple! 😀
  • Soundtrack: My keyboard is a half meter beside me, but I think there is already some dust on it. The 48 hours were in my way and LMMS has never been used.
  • Bugfixing: There are some minor bugs, like colliders I forgot, checkpoints that are not being deleted when you start from the begining (without closing the game)
  • Ingame menu: I wanted to make a basic ingame menu, but at 2 AM (CET) I just wanted to sign the game in as soon as possible. I don’t think it is really necessary anyway.
I am really time I made it in time and I think the result isn’t that bad for my first time! (At least the graphics and the style)
TL;DR Please don’t hit me! It’s my first finished game! 😛
(Bonus info: I am from Austria, so please don’t hit me for my for my grammar bad and speling, as well 😉 )
