Not too bad, I think

Well, this Ludum Dare has definitely been an experience!

I had decided not to enter this time around because I’m an actor and it overlapped with the pantomime run which, for those of you oversees that do not know the magic of a pantomime, is kind of like a play but extremely over the top and energetic, often based around a fairytale, featuring mostly fourth-wall-breaking humour and cross-dressing as standard… and I knew balancing the two would be the end of my sanity.

Anyway, watching that LD timer count to 0, I couldn’t resist! I decided I’d give it a go! So, at three o’clock that morning, knowing I had to wake up for two high energy performances that day, I cracked out what looked to be my best entry yet, despite initially not holding much confidence in my ability to meet the theme.

I worked on it during intervals and between shows and then through my one day off to finish ‘Green Fingers‘ which I am rather proud of. I entered my game this morning and had to wake up for work at 4am… Then I had rehearsals for my next play… now I am barely alive and typing this.

That is my story. I am not too proud to accept pity votes. In all seriousness, I’d be ever so grateful if you’d play my game and judge it as you feel necessary, don’t take it easy on me. After all, it’s a free game and you might like it!

Dark corridors…

This is looking to be my most successful Ludum Dare (which may not be a surprise to anyone familiar with my other disappointing attempts). This time around, the idea came to me like a well deserved slap in the face and I got to work straight away. In only 3 hours, I have randomly generating corridors, not awful art work and some VERY early work on the actual character programming.

Alone in a corridorMy idea is a reversal of the usual, over-done horror game in which you are running away from some description of monster, collecting things and awaiting a jump scare… in this game, you get to jump out on the unsuspecting ‘hero’ before he manages to loot the tunnels and escape. The game works on the idea of hiding around corners to catch the ‘hero’ when he least expects it. You can ‘smell fear’, so the ‘hero’ is far easier to find when scared… however, when the ‘hero’ is scared, he is too alert to fall for the average jump scare.

Your goal, as the monster of the tunnels, is to make the ‘hero’ quite literally soil himself… that’s how you win.

Good luck, everyone!

Things are going well… this never happens

I fully recovered from my involuntary 35 hours without sleep (thanks insomnia) and got back to work. And things are looking great!

I added schools of fish that swim together:

And added a survival element to the game involving hunger and a day/night cycle. This is the game’s time scale:

I like how things are coming together. I hope things are going well for everyone else!

Xbox controller support?

Hello all!

I added Xbox gamepad support to my game despite not having an xbox gamepad myself :/

Here is an early build of my game. If you have an Xbox gamepad, please tell me if it works (it should automatically detect and use one if it’s connected)

Depths (Nexust's LD29 game) xbox control support

Once again, good luck everyone! 😀

Pretty impressed with my progress so far and so I thought I’d take the time to show you all a screenshot!

I went for a hand drawn approach rather than my usual pixel thing. I’m liking the results 😀

I hope all is going well for everyone!

Tired already!

After a long day swimming (not how I should have been preparing, I know), I found myself at 2 in the morning bothering my brain for ideas. After thinking of the idea and putting some very basic gameplay in place, I’ve decided… sleep is much needed.

I’m feeling confident enough to allow myself the luxury of a few hours sleep before continuing in the competition.

Good luck everyone!

Giving it a shot!

The Ludum Dare was a key motivation for me becoming a game developer so I thought it was about time I gave it a go.

I’ve set myself a sub-challenge for the Ludum Dare: I will take part using only free software. What I mean by that is, all the software I use will be free, open source or will at least have a free version (I wont be using Photoshop for example, I’ll be switching between GIMP and Paint.net).

I’ll be streaming my progress over my website at ludum.thenexust.com and Twitch so you’re welcome to follow me. I’ll be attempting to stay awake for the whole 72 hours and I’ll try not to bore you.

That is all. Good luck everyone.
