Survival Craft Started

Saturday, April 18th, 2015 4:18 am

This is my first iteration for the game Survival Craft.
I am not 100% sure about the title but I know my game mechanics.
It is a 2D pixel art platformer.
You need to survive and get to the save house on each level.
Use any object you can find to your advantage because … THEY… are coming…

This is my first screenshot so far:

Excellent theme, so much variety

An Unconventional Weapon, this theme is brilliant.
There is so much variety here.
Will I make a platformer, 3D shooter, top down shoorter, arcade, etc.

Can I use SketchUp for modeling???

Wednesday, April 15th, 2015 6:43 am

I am in for #32.

I was wondering, can I make use of Google Sketchup for making models for my game?

Also, can one use the preset fill patterns in GIMP?

I will be using:

  • Engine: jMonkeyEngine3
  • Sound: bfxr and my own voice
  • Images: GIMP
  • Modeling: Blender3D and maybe Sketchup
  • Food: What ever is in the house
  • Coffee: Nespresso

Very excited…

Pixel Pong Postmortem

Monday, March 30th, 2015 12:17 pm

I would like to discuss with you what my approach was for creating this game.
First of here is the entry page: http://ludumdare.com/compo/minild-58/?action=preview&uid=32655
Google Play Store download link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bruynhuis.pixelpong
And a preview video:

So I was aware that there was a Mini LD this week but it was only until Tuesday that I decided to enter.
And the only reason I entered was because an idea for a game came to me.
The tools I used:

  • Game Engine – jMonkeyEngine
  • Texture editing – GIMP
  • Sounds FX – bfxr
  • Sound editing – Audacity

At first everything went very well.
I had some problems with performance when I converted the game to run on android and the reason for this was the amount of individual objects passed to the graphics card.
The first moment I batched those spike objects I had an instant increase in FPS.
Other than that, this game took me about 6 hours of work.

Pixel Pong, ready to be played

Wednesday, March 25th, 2015 1:43 pm

After some effort today I managed to do the final touches to my game.

Pixel Pong is a one touch game similar as the classic Ping Pong where you the player have to control the ball. Survive as long as you can bouncing the little pixel back and forth! Avoid the spikes and don’t die! Bounce against the paddles to turn back. It seems simple enough, but this little pixel will quickly find things getting tricky!

Here is a link to my entry page with all available downloads:

And here is a new gameplay video:

Pixel Pong making good progress

My entry at Mini LD#58

Late but not last (BitPong)

Monday, March 23rd, 2015 10:32 pm

Hi to all,

I have been late with this announcement but I had to try and do something.

Last night I decided to enter this Mini LD #58 when a simple idea for the Ping Pong challenged came to mind.

So I have started with a ping pong idea where you as player have to control the ball and not the paddle.

There is gravity involved and you have to bounce by tapping the screen from the one paddle to the other.

I am planning on making the look of the game the popular flat UI look and colors.

It will be a one touch game and will also be available on Android.

On android I will integrate the google play services so that players can see there high score.

Here’s a screenshot of my progress:

Farm Invaders: My Jam Entry

Monday, August 25th, 2014 10:55 pm

Hi guys,

I would like to share with you a funny story and then at the same time my game entry to the ludum dare 30.

First of I had one heck of a busy weekend and not coding wise, NO personal stuff.
At first on Friday I thought, YEAH ludum dare compo, man I cannot wait. This is going to be fun….
Then the long awaited Saturday morning arrived and what do you know, the them “Connected Worlds” was chosen.
Man, I was afraid of that theme, I do not know why but I had no idea what to do for a game.

The whole of Saturday and Sunday passed and the 48 hour compo was done.
Well I gave up on the compo and decided maybe next time.

And then, I can’t explain why but for some reason I got an idea Monday afternoon and thought, BUT wait, maybe I must give it another try and enter the 72 hour Jam compo.
So, I started with my idea of a game…

It is called, “Farm Invaders” and I finally finished it to a point of entry 10 minutes before cut off time.. Showweee…
So I coded with no stop until 4 AM this morning, just enough time to have 2 hours of sleep before WORK and here I am.

The basic idea of the game is that you the player are a farmer and must defend your farm from and alien invasion.
There are these portals (Connection to other worlds) that opens up and aliens passes through.
You have to kill as many of them as possible.

Here is the game entry link: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-30/?action=preview&uid=32655

And a screenshot:

I am sitting here, it is early morning in the south of Africa.
I want to start with this amazing compo but I have not idea of what I want to do
for the theme “Connected Worlds”……

Man, I am lost today, my mind is not setup yet!

So I am writing this post to inform all contestants GOOD LUCK and enjoy.
