Escape The Void: Post-Mortem

Thought since others are doing these after-submission look-backs I would too!

What went wrong:
>The physics from the start were a shambles, collision detecting is a very awful thing to deal with when you don’t have some solid code for it, and mine wasnt! All through the game I continuously made changes to the physics.
>I didn’t brainstorm… Being my first game to complete, I had the idea for a game where you smash into atoms, then just dove into doing the physics, graphics etc, and didn’t brainstorm any features, so I ended up making them as I went along.
>Coded in GameMaker, not the best idea if you want a retail quality game, or a game thats cross-platform… So I started learning Flash(FlashPunk) straight after my entry…

The main point i’m disappointed is not following the storyline, I basically said at the beginning “Go smash into atoms” then didn’t elaborate too much.

You can play it here:

Being the first project I actually FINISHED! I’m pretty proud of this game, I’ve got 1 or 2 engines I’ve coded and not bothered creating games with them. I didn’t plan on participating this weekend, I decided to when it was 1 hour into the event. This is of course my first LudumDare and first full game, I already have a few ideas for new games i’ll be developing soon! 😀

So here it is,”Escape from the Void” a game in which you, a lonely atom, must smash himself violently against other atoms in order to create parts of the universe, allowing you to progress levels. Creating this game was a great experience and i’ll definately be competing in future Ludum’s and without further ado, here is the game:

Sadly its windows only. No mac port or web port, or linux, sorry I just don’t have the knowledge to do it myself, or the money to pay someone to do it, but in future I plan to make some games in flash using flashpunk, so fingers crossed :)

Coming along nicely.

I’ve got enemies, obstructions, a weapon to pickup and one placed in the maps. Little things that send you flying and lots of stuff, its looking like a real game now, with 10 levels, 4 of which are tutorials, but still. Hopefully have the basic game finished for the entry time, then work on it more over the next few months to be a more complete game! 😀

The game is coming along nicely, the story is so: Your an atom before the creation of the universe, you must smash into other atoms in order to move to the next level, as you progress, levels will get more complicated and have more features because the universe is getting more complex.

Camera tracking is easy thanks to GM8, so bigger levels with scrolling, the below level is level 8, and scrolls upwards, its the first level to feature the cannon powerup! 😀

So far I have a few good features, and i’m just adding as I go along!

Codename: Smashed To Life

Smashed to life (not a final title) is a game where the user must work through levels to smash themselves (an atom) into another atom in order to make it to the next level. Currently I have the base framework in order, movement, smashing atoms and instructions/text. Now I have to add a few obsticals such as spikes, add some more features, and get on to level design!

Slowly getting the mechanics working

The mechanics are coming into place, who would think getting an atom to smash would be sooo hard….

I had a new idea for the game! and has been renamed “Escape from nothing”, the player is an atom, in the nothing before the universe, and has to adventure to find another atom to smash into to create a universe!

FInished the concept of my game, and the title “Escape From Box1”, decided on a character graphic, and decided on an 8-bit style for my game!

Using GameMaker 8, because I only realised the comp was running like 2 hours ago 😛 I’ll hopefully be using C# next time around! my first LudumDare! 😀
