Happy New Year Everyone!

It’s been a great Ludum Dare and we really appreciate the feedback we got on our game Shadow Fencer Theatre.

This is going to be the first LD game entry that we are going to work on after the jam.  Our plan is to showcase the game at a local event at the end of the month, so we are continuing working on the game adding all sorts of improvements including:

  • New Controls (Jump/Duck) that are smoother
  • Improved Sword Physics
  • New Characters
  • New Arenas
  • New Mouth Noises
  • Maybe a Joke or Two

If you haven’t played and commented on our game yet, please check it out!  Until Next Time!

ShuddaHaddaLottaFun’s Top Games of LD37!

Now that the jam is about to end, and we’ve played quite a bit of games, we wanted to point out some of our favorite games we played during Ludum Dare 37… and also our game.  Play these things!

Walkie Talkie – Ingenious is the only word to describe this game.  A working chat application that allows you to type in messages, but then each message gets transformed into a playable platformer level.  I mean, common… what!?  That’s crazy dope.

Face Man – Here at ShuddaHaddaLottaFun, we like games with style, and Face Man has that, in faces… and maybe butts… I dunno.  A jump and gun shooter where your dead enemies faces become your new weapons.  This is a game to come back to and play again and again.

Cancelled Refuge – One of us might have had a hissy-fit in this games comments section, but it was deserved… this game is TOO good.  This game is practically ready to be flashed to a cartridge, sent back in time, and put on the shelf at your local Hollywood Video to rent and play on your Nintendo.  It’s got a sound test for crying out load.  Super fun to play, and look forward to seeing more of it in the future hopefully.

Karate Basketball – Let’s be honest, this game could have been awful and we still would have found it funny.  It’s a good joke.  NBA Jam, but starring Draymond Green kicking people.  But this game is also really good and fun to play.  I mean, it feels like NBA Jam, but with a kick button.  It’s great.

ClapClap – Also known as “Real Life: The Simulation”, ClapClap is an awesomely awkward adventure in social clap expectations.  You are at a concert, ready to bring forth applause from your sweaty hands, but need to clap at the right time when the song ends… and there are a lot of false endings.  Clap too early, and you get some real mean-mugging from the folks around you.

and lastly… our game

Shadow Fencer Theatre – A 1-2 player fencing game set in the world of shadow puppets.  We are super happy with how our game turned out this jam, and would love for you to check it out! It’s super silly fun when you have some friends to play with. Play it and tell us what you think!

The One About the Update

Posted by (twitter: @ShuddaHadda)
Monday, December 19th, 2016 10:58 am

Hello All,

We just posted an update to our game Shadow Fencer Theatre, our final update before moving on to Post-Jam stuff (assuming no more bugs).  We listened to feedback and realized that the controls were not very intuitive, and people were getting stuck.  So, in this update we added vertical movement to the swords, as well as an in-game control list for those who don’t like to read the text below the screen.

We hope people do not feel that this update is outside of the scope of a jam update.  We felt that if people were having difficulties playing, we needed to address it before moving on.  Like, it’s still way janky, but it’s better.  We have a patch notes section on our page, which shows what we have done, with a note on the patch notes stating we want you to rate us how you feel we should be rated.  Meaning, if you don’t like the control change, then just play the game only moving the sword left and right.

We have lots of ideas for continuing post jam, and will post a bit more here. until then, check out our game.

Postmortem: Shadow Fencer Theatre

Shadow Fencer Theatre Title

Ah, where to begin?… Perhaps, the beginning!

I was born in a poor, small fishing village off the coast of… what?  Not that beginning? Oh, I see.
The date was December 9th, 2016.  It was the start of Ludum Dare 37 – One Room. Our initial concept was to create a goofy fighting game with paper figures attached to popsicle sticks. You know, the ones that have push pins in the joints so they flop about. It was a concept that I had rattling in my head for a bit, and chance would have it, the theme actually fit the idea! It’s a game about a kid in their room acting out battles! This was a first since there was not a lot of time spent ideating, and I could just start prototyping. The art man was unavailable until Sunday, so I pushed forward to make my wobbly fighting game using old concept art as my basis.

Concept Art DevDev before we had a full concept

And then there was art…

When the art man came on board I regaled him with what’s what, and sent him on his way to figure out the art and characters and such. Luckily for me, he came up with the idea to make it look like a shadow puppet theatre!  So good!

This concept & art style solved our two biggest issues with Game Jam development.

Issue #1 – Scope

We make things too big, and then they don’t work, and are incomplete, or we cut so much stuff back that we sort of just have a thing. This game had a simple mechanic that I could just make, you know, work.

Issue #2 – Not enough Art because of Issue #1

With too big of a scope, there’s not enough time to make all the art. We have stuff missing, or even worse, I help out and then the art style is all over the place.  This game had a vision! We could make stuff that all fit!

Our First Multiplayer

Another thing to note was this was our first multiplayer game. We knew it would be more fun with two people playing, and playing on controllers as well. We developed for controllers, which ended out making the keyboard controls a little awkward… sorry. Also developing on a Mac to make joysticks to work on a PC with HTML5 is, well, silly.

Keyboard and Gamepad Controls

So that’s it, we had a thing were all the pieces finally fell together… plus the sound effects and music, but that is another tale for another time on:

Yo, who knows what’s what when it comes to Unity Physics 2D? Occasionally when the swords in our game collide, it breaks the hinge joints holding the sword to the arm…. what’s the deal with this?  Any tips and tricks with Physics 2D would be super appreciate.  Wanna squash this bug for good!

Meanwhile…. Check out Shadow Fencer Theatre!

Trust us, this game is way more fun with Controllers and a friend! Try it out!

Pretty happy with this one if you can’t tell… More from us later once the jam winds die down… but for now we present:

Shadow Fencer Theatre!

Please enjoy!  Also, if you happen to have a Joystick to play the game with, let us know if it works.  We were having issues with the right stick not working with the HTML5 build, but we are on a Mac, so… you know…

Ok… not musical, just music… made for the game.  Ok, this is just an excuse to post my music, and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.  The music that is, the game… well… it’s got some issues, but we got-er-dun so thumbs up!

PLAY The Last of Egg

The Last of Egg is a survival horror game. You play as the last remaining egg struggling to survive. Collect weapons, find crafting supplies, and avoid being attacked by the mutants of the land, known as “Sizzles”. Will you ever get home? Will you ever see Claire again? It’s what’s inside that counts my friend… so are you soft? Or are you Hard-Boiled.

Thank you to everyone that has played/voted. The comments have been great so far! You have plenty of time to watch Force Awakens….so scramble on over HERE before you head to the theater. Thanks!
