I’m in

I’m in again for 37. This time I’ll be using Python, Kivy for the UI, Reason for audio, and I’ve decided to do my graphics in watercolor on 140lb coldpress that I’ll scan in and pipe through photoshop.

Good luck to all! Don’t forget to sleep.

Can the human condition be a weapon? Ethics? Morality? Impatience?

A genetic algorithm on one screen

I could trim the code way, way down and make it super ugly, but I’m happy with 60 lines. They fit on my screen, anyway.

I know it isn’t “fun”. This is intended more as example code for aspiring game devs, so go ahead and learn from it.

Yeah… I made a Sex Sim (safe for work)

Yep. The trick is to move the mouse carefully. If your libido is depleted or your arousal hits the max, you’re finished. Win if you can last 10 seconds. It’s animated and has sound. PLAY IT HERE!

Screen Shot 2013-08-25 at 2.18.47 PMI used Coffeescript/jQuery/HTML5, Gimp, Vim/tmux, and iScream (for recording my squeaky chair). I’ve never done JavaScript before this, so it was very educational.

I’m dedicating this game to Jason Kölker. Dobby: thanks for the good time!

Your feedback is appreciated. I’ll try to get suggestions in if I think I can.

A code-complete demo!

You’ve waited long enough, Ludum Dare #27. Let me know what you think:

12 soda postmortem

Well, 12 sodas down and things are looks quite good. Coffeescript was an excellent choice, even though I’ve never touched it (or javascript) previously. I’ve got animation working, sound playing at the right times, and attributes updating. I did not think I would even get this far. Lessons learned:

  1. If you’ve typed a command three times, you need an alias/shell script already.
  2. git commit early, git commit often.
  3. If you’re a python programmer, ease off the “:” on loop entry/branching
  4. Coffeescript wants “:” in class var declarations, not “=”
  5. There are very few, if any, useful Coffeescript examples on the web
  6. What few Coffeescript examples there are exist in a useless snippet form that cannot just be copypastaed
  7. Vim and Coffeescript don’t play well together in terms of syntax error detection, but that’s really Coffeescripts fault.
  8. Javascript/Coffeescript scoping rules are absolutely ridiculous and cannot be understood completely, ever, by anyone.
  9. Keeping everything very simple has paid off well; at this point, even if I don’t get around to beautification, I have a playable game.
  10. Get the code done first, then worry about the eye candy.

I’ll have a demo coming up shortly before bed tonight, and I’ll spend tomorrow perfecting the graphics and implementing your suggestions.

Got my six

If you’re having focus problems I feel bad for you, son. I got 99 problems, but being tired ain’t one.

The idea came to me nearly instantly

In round 4 voting, I saw “10 seconds” as a theme and thought “AHHA!”. There was no second-guessing. I knew that would be the final theme, and I knew what my game would be. It seemed so obvious to me that I feared lots of people would make the same game. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, so you’ll just have to wait to see it.

I decided to learn a new language for this, my first, Ludum Dare. My toolkit consists of:

CoffeeScript (my first time)
vim/tmux (ide)
html5 (ux)
gimp (visual)
iScream (audio)

I’ve got my audio/viz content created, canvas firing up, and audio playing at this point. If all goes well, tomorrow I’ll have the whole thing wrapped up before dinner.

Good luck everyone!

Well I’ve gone through like 6 sodas today, so I guess you could say things are getting pretty serious.
