I’m in(ish)

I’m going to try to make something small for this LD because I don’t have the entirety of the weekend. I’ll casually whip something together!

This time around I’m leaving Löve2D behind and going with Game Maker Studio. I wanted to try it out for a jam last time but didn’t feel comfortable using it since I barely had any experience with it.

So the tool line-up for this LD is the following:

  • Game Maker Studio – Engine/IDE/Editor
  • PyxelEdit & Krita – Art and Pixel Art
  • bfxr – Sound effects
  • Famitracker or MilkyTracker for Audio … maybe?

I’m sure I’m forgetting something buts that’s about it! I’ll try to do the compo but will most likely end up doing it for the jam, will post source anyways of course!

I’m officially out, and it hurts me.

I have been excited for LD since 3 months back, I even got a sweet idea, I just don’t have the energy for it this time around.

Call it the coder blues if you like, I’m a CS student with a game development direction, most of our courses are game programming related but not specific, we still learn Assembly, Algorithms and Data-structures, Shader programming, AI, Physics, Distributed Network Design, Parallel Processes, Operating System Programming and the likes.

Right now, we are having our yearly project, where we work with the other disciplines like 2d and 3d artists, sound and music guys, game writers and designers. The project I’m working on is great, but comes weekend I’m pumped out, but I WANT to develop games, I WANT to do jams, but I just end up listening to music and watching series. It has never been a problem before, so if anyone knows how to re-energize for future jams so this doesn’t happen PLEASE, PLEASE share some information with me!

Kind regards,
Moonkis

This will be my … 3rd(?) time goin in, this time I have switched it up a bit from the standard Lua + LÖVE2D with Game Maker Studio Pro which I bought this x-mas. I have played around with it a bit and it has worked out really good so far!

It’s an excellent piece of tool for rapid prototyping and I’m expecting to get a lot further this time around, I will of course be using GML for logic and probobly make use of Grandma Engine if I decide to do a platformer, depending on the announced theme and what ideas I get.

Toolkit includes:

  • Game Maker Studio Pro – As an engine for game making.
  • Pyxel Edit – As main pixel-art program.
  • Audacity, Bfxr and Abundant Music – Programs for creating music and sound effects.
  • Trello – For organizing thoughts and features.
  • OBS and Chronolapse – For streaming and timelapse.

I’m pretty excited, and so far my favorite theme is Grow, which I hope will be chosen (Though I don’t have any ideas yet!).

Good luck everyone!

Results after day 1, could be more…

Mostly did GUI stuff, and about 0% gameplay…not good. Tomorrow it’s all about getting the gameplay implemented. This is what I got so far:

I have determined to make a game that acts a bit like a mash-up of a Tamagochi and Dating Sim, only the characters are all planets, moons, or asteroids.

This is what I have so far…. http://www.gfycat.com/WebbedIllegalHerculesbeetle

Time to start building the “engine”, going to be pretty darn GUI oriented.

I’m using LÖVE (with Lua…) and Sublime Text 2 for coding. Pyxel, Pickle and Paint.NET for graphics. Also here is a link to my basecode

I’m using Lurker, Lume, Flux and Classic, located at rxi’s github as libraries! Wooohow! Lets go!

I refined the core mechanics, and I’m starting to feel satisfied, of course there is still a long way to go but hey, it’s something!

Today has been semi-slow, real life don’t stop even though you want to! Fortunatly, I managed to do some spriting, implement a camera and as the title suggests, I NOW HAVE SHAKE ABILITY! (The gif dosen’t make it justice)
I only need some particle effects and I have every visual effect to make the game itself!

After spending quite some time trying to figure out why my collision wasn’t working (pro-tip: Read the documentation!) I got ‘inspect’-action working.

but when I do , it sucks! Finished the animations for the generic dude and girl. I’m using Pickle Editor and if anyone knows HOW to resize the images inside the editor please do tell me.

EDIT: For some reason the images dosen’t animate, click on them to watch the super duper awesome animation!

I’m in for my second time! This way around I changed my tools a bit as well as the language (C++). So what’s the new lineup?

Language: Lua
API: Löve (known to some as Love2D)
Editor: Sublime Text 2
Graphics: Pickle (or Pyxel)
Sound: Bfxr, Audacity
Music: Abundant Music
Source Control: Git(hub)

External lib: Lurker, Lovebird, Flux and Classic (all made by rxi)
Timelapse: Chronolapse
Streaming: OBS

Coming up: Ludum Dare Entry!

Seeing as this is my first Ludum Dare entry ever I decided to play it slow, even though I wanted to do it in C++ and SFML ( 1.6 ) I will more likely do it in C# and XNA for speed and prototyping. I’m very excited! And I’m looking forward to see everyone’s creations.
The goal? Finish a game within 48 hours, the competition in itself is not important for me at  this time.

Language of Choice: C# 4.0

Framework: XNA 4.0

Sounds: I have no clue but seeing as others use this “BFXR” for SFX and “Milkytracker” for background music I might take a swing at it.

Graphics: Seeing as I’m horrible at art I MIGHT aim for some free resources but I’ll probably do some programmer art with Paint(.net)/GIMP

Timelapse: Chronolapse or Camstudio for the timelapse. Also I’m thinking about live-streaming everything, but we will see how I pursue the matter.

Other: Google ( Like a boss ), Ludum Dare IRC for some cuddly chatting about w/e.

I’ll revisit the tools for now, I’m not sure what I will use.
Lucky me I have plenty of time checking them out, though I doubt I will actually do that.
