I want to be in…

I’d really like to join in the compo again (I did it three times, never finished my fourth and missed my fifth), just not sure I’ll have the time this weekend.  If I do though, I’ll be using:

Hope to see you all on the weekend!

Throwing in the towel

Well, I put in a day, and decided I’m not feeling this game.  My idea was that you were a chef who served terrible food (this was the best tie I could find with the theme) who had to fight angry customers using his cooking.  I got the modelling done, but I couldn’t work out the combat or cooking, so I’m calling it quits for LD33.  I’ll be back in November for what will be my fifth comp, sadly not in a row.  I’ll enter what I got done, you can find it here.

Well, I’m off to bed, but I thought I’d throw up what I’ve done.  It has an, um, kitchen theme?

So when we get this close to the comp starting, there are so many posts that none of them are on the front page for more than a minute or to.  This might not work, but let’s do a little experiment with that.  If you see this post on the front page of the website, comment.  We’ll see how many people are actually reading all of the posts.

I’m In

The title is pretty self-explanatory.  This is my fourth time.

Engine – Unity3D

3D Modelling – Blender

2D “Art” (I’m a programmer, it doesn’t really count as art.) – Paint.NET

Audio Recording – Audacity

Sound Effect Generation – sfxr

Texture Generation – MaPZone 2

Done. About time.

Well, I finished my third Ludum Dare.  As sad as I am that it’s over, and I have to wait 3 months to the next one, it’s about FREAKING time that I finished.  You can check out my game here.  I suggest downloading it, the problem with Chrome means that I had to use the HTML5 export in Unity, which takes a long time to load.

Semi-Obligitory “I’m In” Post

So why do we still do these anyways?  It makes sense if you have public assets or a code base to declare, but for the rest of us what’s the point?  If someone doesn’t do a post and then enters, no one will notice.  I suppose it’s just tradition, but for the sake of argument, here we go:

For Ludum Dare 32, I will be using the following tools:

Game Engine:

Unity 3D

3D Asset Creation:

2D Asset Creation:

SFXR, Audacity

Monitor Power Cord Repair:

Scotch Tape

Tools I Will Not Use:

Hammers, Screwdrivers, Wrenches, etc.

I did it.  Yay.

And……….. Done!

Whew!  That was a long weekend, but I did it.  My game is posted, and I need sleep.  I had to miss much of the first day for prior commitments, but I did my best to make up lost time on Sunday.  I made this game (called Lumen, by the way) using Unity, which I had never really used mush before.  It was a great learning experience.  All-in-all, I thoroughly enjoyed Ludum Dare 31, and can’t wait for 32.

I think my game spawned too many arrows…

Generic “I’m In” Post!

I will be entering Ludum Dare 31! (Obviously, otherwise I wouldn’t be doing an “I’m In” post.)

I will be using:

Language: C# or Java

Engine: Unity, or writing a quick one myself in Java.

IDE: MonoDevelop or Eclipse

Asset Creation: Paint.NET, Blender, SFXR

Libraries: Standard Unity libraries, or standard Java libraries and LWJGL

I will also try to do a time lapse, because I find watching game dev time lapses fun.

Thoughts on my LD30 Entry

LD30 was my first full Ludum Dare.  I had entered two MLDs before, but not any actual compos.  I am happy that I managed to complete my game, but it has some serious problems.  (My game is called “A Rainbow”, by the way).  First and foremost of these was that I didn’t set a standard tick rate, making the game run incredibly fast on fast computers.  Also, the graphics sucked, and there was no audio.  Still, I am pretty happy that I managed to create a game at all in 48 hours without a game engine.  (Although, next time I’m probably going to use Unity).

The idea for my game was that several coloured worlds existed, and you could teleport between them.  Also, you would be able to see outlines of objects in the other worlds, so you could jump off of an object in one world, teleport, and land on an object in another.  This mostly carried over into the final game, although I wasn’t able to make the outlines appear, in the end I just made it so you could see everything the same in all worlds.

Originally, I was going to make a sprite-based game.  Then, at the end of day one, I had to restart, since my rendering system wasn’t working.  I ended up using Java’s built-in graphics, which are very underwhelming, but worked.

I also planned to have 10 levels, but then cut it down to five as a time saving measure.  Later, I reduced this to three.

All in all, I am quite satisfied with the final game, despite its flaws, and I will definitely be back in December!

I will be entering Ludum Dare 30.  This will be my first full Ludum Dare (I have only entered Mini-Ludum Dares until now).  I will be using:

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse

Libraries: Standard Java Libraries, and possibly LWJGL

Graphics: Paint.NET

Sound: sfxr

Other Tools: The Sprite Sheet generator I created for MLD #51.  (Available here).

I may also create a time lapse of my entry to post on YouTube.  I would like to live stream it, but my internet is terrible. Hopefully my game will turn out alright, but I’m sure it will be fun however it is.
