So its over again, at last. These hours just fly away! Its been an awesome weekend, and as always I’m looking forward to the next LD already. But hey, check out my entry!

Basically you control a villain, which is.. overpowered by an even greater villain. In free-fall you have to struggle to stay alive! The original idea was to include a boss element, but that had to be put aside in order to complete it.

It ended up with a cool little endless platformer. You have to time your jumps, utilize the double-jump cleverly, and take advantage of a certain time-altering ability as you collect points, health and other pickups. All this while you’re dodging bullets and super-deadly razorblades emerging all over!

This time i clocked in 16 hours of development, and i even managed to create a timelapse video! The video will be uploaded shortly, but for now – play the game! Can you achieve a score above 1500?

The Highbred Pixel – Post Mortem

Time to wrap it up with a little summary!

This time the theme was Evolution. Of course, like many others i had ideas popping all over, but i decided to break it down, and keep it simple. Unlike my last LD, where i started off with the animations before anything else, i brainstormed the idea, tested some mechanics, and mapped out a level draft.

The Art – Shortly after i made an interesting choice. I decided to, in order to cut down dev time, to not make specific art sprites. That might sound bold, and no, i didnt buy them instead! About 90% of the art in the game is purely made out of colored boxes – and personally, i think it worked out pretty nice!

The concept – So on to the concept itself. At the beginning, i was like, this should be fine, and i definitely should be able to make it in time! Of course, i didnt. The main concept is that the player starts out as a pixel. You are inside a sort of pixel breeding facility/factory, and you just happen to have some.. unique powers! How original eh. Well, the player must progress throughout the facility, and quickly shows that the strongest sure do survive.

At a certain point in the game, the pixel evolves. This was however not as intended. The process of evolving was supposed to be a much greater task, but due to limited time, i had to severely cut it down – which is reflected in the game.

Results – But in the end, i’m happy with it! And thats what’s important. I got to explore a new kind of way to create art assets, and set the mood, as well as scratching the surface regarding some pretty cool gameplay mechanics. If anything, i would love to go back and improve the controls, as they are.. far from optimal – but it is doable.

Looking forward to the next LD!

Progress! “The Highbred Pixel”

Hello! I planned to post alot, and document the progress and such, but i spent simply too much time locking myself to developing. But heres a little progress recap post before the deadline later today!

The game is about a pixel. A pixel that is quite something different that all the other pixels! It has the ability to manipulate time itself, and must progress in order to uhm, evolve.

With this game i’ve tried something i’ve never done before. 90% of the art is made of square, scaleable boxes, just with different colors. It was very interesting to limit myself like this, and to see what the end results was. Still a lot of work left until its “done” though!

Test the game here! If you’re stuck, just experiment with holding [space].

Also, feel free to check out my webpage :)

I’m in! Plus a little success story..

Tools to be used:

Construct 2

Some good news! The last LD, i submitted the game Lost Oxide, which i polished a bit further. Now, a few months later, it has been nominated for Game of the Year, Best Technical Achievement and Best Visual Art in Norwegian Game Awards 2012! I’m heading over to the award event next week with the hopes of some nifty prices (up to $7000 USD!!).

I will post some progress here, but if you’d like, check out my website as well!
