About Meganopteryx (twitter: @meganopteryx)

I went to school at Texas A&M University for a bachelor of Environmental Design and a masters in Visualization Sciences. I can't believe it took me so long to get into Ludum Dare. But here I am.

Well my idea seems to be coalescing

Something to do with two places connected with portals, where you have to maintain your temperature… one side is constantly increasing your temperature, the other side is constantly cooling you. You have to stay within the right temperature range in order to survive, but you also have to get to the end of the level.

This reminds me a lot of Metroid Prime 2.

I wonder how many people are making a game exactly like this.

Oh well, mine will be different!

Something New

I finally have time to do the compo this time, and I already kind of have an idea of what I want to do.

  1. Make something in Unity
  2. Play around with particle effects and how I can make a game heavily based on them

That’s it! I’m excited to see what theme is chosen, there are several really promising ones for an idea I have in mind.

I’m going to try making something in 3D Unity instead of using the 2D stuff. I’ve actually never done that before, so it should be interesting. I don’t plan on using any fancy plugins or even any prior source code because I want to make a new kind of game I haven’t made before.

So my declaration of base resources:

  1. Unity 3D
  2. Bosca Ceoil or Garage Band
  3. Audacity and/or sfxr
  4. Gimp (if I even need textures, I think I might just use Unity materials and stuff)
  5. Blender if I really need to do any 3D modeling. We’ll see.

I will be basing my game on the behaviors and kits that come prepackaged with Stencyl. Specifically, the Space Shooter kit.

Of course I plan on changing out the art and behaviors for ones that suit my game (duh). But this should provide me a quicker start.

Tools I’m Using

Alright I have finally decided what I’m gonna be using to make this game. Or at least the potential things I will use.

  • Environment: Unity or Stencyl
  • Audio: Audacity, SFXR, Garage Band
  • Art: Gimp, possibly iPad programs like ProCreate and ArtStudio

That’s all there is to it, right?

I’ve discovered I only have about 18 hours of dedicated work time to develop this game this weekend. Wish me luck!

First time to play

I’ve never done one of these competitions before. I have a bunch of other plans this weekend but I’ll see what I can make! The themes look really interesting.

I also realized recently that the best way I program games is not by designing the whole thing out but rather just starting to program something and see where it goes from there. I like simulations. This will be good to get my creative juices flowing again after doing contract work for almost 3 years solid.

I still haven’t decided between Unity, Haxe (which I’ve never used) and Stencyl. Anyone have thoughts or recommendations? I know js, as3, C#.
