Made a wallpaper – thought I’d share!

I’ve never made a custom LD wallpaper before, so I decided I’d throw one together last night. I live in a terminal as my day job as a web developer demands it – so I went with that classic “Fallout” terminal theme. Hope ya’ll enjoy! Good luck tomorrow!

Last time around we weren’t able to submit a game for the jam. We were trying out some new workflows for team development and we struggled with a concrete idea.

So instead for LD33, I’ll be going solo for the compo like I did for LD31. I’m going to be streaming at: twitch.tv/thoughtreactorlive

As for my arsenal this go around:

  • Construct 2 for 2D
  • Unity 5.1 for 3D
  • Photoshop CC
  • FL Studio 12
  • Bfxr
  • Laravel 5.1 if I decide to do a leaderboard or something

A Rough First Half

If we were to get a grade on the first half of this Ludum Dare, we’d get a C- for sure. We went a little too experimental with our original idea and what we had in front of us was really complex and almost unusable.

So today, we’re going to take what we’ve learned (a lot about Git and Unity) about our workflow and try and get something done before tomorrow evening. Our idea is much simpler now – you have a weapon that swaps your position with enemies. The game will take place in a Portal-style obstacle course environment where the player will lob or shoot his projectiles at Guards. Bonus points go to players who can eliminate the guards by swapping with them in insidious ways.

Once we can get that mechanic implemented when can spend the next 24 hours banging out some art and level design.

Thought Reactor off to a slow start! But getting goin’!

We’re a little behind due to the fact we spent a deal of time refining our idea. We decided on a first-person puzzle/platform game. The “unconventional weapon” is electromagnetism – more specifically, the concept of positive and negative charge.

The player must manipulate his charge and the charge of the objects around him to get through several series of gates. Given this, if an object of gate shares the player’s charge – they repel him – and vice versa.

We’re just getting into the early development stages and will be streaming over at http://twitch.tv/thoughtreactorlive, so please drop in and take a peak at the game taking shape. It’s going to be an intense weekend!

This time around we will be teaming up for the 72 hour jam. This is our fifth LD and its time to get hyped! Last LD, we had a successful compo entry and for LD32 we’re going to leverage the whole team instead if flying solo.

Having completed two LDs now, one jam and one compo, we’re beginning to get the hang of the best practices. Our goal with this LD is to maximize our team workflow by utilizing version control and task oriented strategies.

We are using some new tools this time:

  • Unity 5: we have stuck with Construct 2 in the past but are hoping Unity’s workflow will make teaming up easier than with C2
  • Tiled: if we decide on a 2D game
  • Blender: if it’s a 3D game
  • Photoshop CC: a given
  • FL Studio 11: would love to record some electric guitar – time permitting
  • Bfxr: because it’s awesome
  • SourceTree: for Git version control
  • OBS: streaming this puppy live @ http://twitch.tv/thoughtreactor

Bounds of Space: Playable

Before I hit the hay I thought I would share the latest build with a working leaderboards function. No enemies as of yet – they’ll be first thing in the morning along with some upgrades and healing items. Can you beat my high score? (I’m mdelally, btw).

Things are coming together!

So I got off to a rough start narrowing down my theme and gameplay scope – but I’ve finally settled on a space shooter called Bounds of Space. After reading PoV’s post on “Hating the theme” I got some inspiration to incorporate the theme of Boundaries into the technical limitation of ‘Entire game in one screen.’

So what I have thus far is the beginning of a snazzy asteroids clone with 3 different classes of ships. The goal is to have more weapons, upgrades, and alien ships introduced, as well – and perhaps an online leaderboard. Have to make up for a pitiful failure at the last LD. So in masochistic fashion I will be soloing for the 48hr Jam instead of the compo!

Engine

  • Unity 4.6 Pro OR Construct 2

Other Tools

  • Photoshop CC2014 for graphics
  • Reaper DAW for music (if there’s time)
  • Bfxr for SFX, of course
  • Audition CC2014 for mixing and mastering SFX
  • OBS to stream and capture time lapse

I think the keys to my success this time around will be more accessible because I am going solo. The past 3 LDs have been fun with the studio as a team – but frankly, it provided far too much scope creep and due to that we’ve failed to compete in the last two!

Thought Reactor checkin’ in!

Greetings! My name is Michael DeLally and I am the lead developer at Thought Reactor, a veeery small indie studio in Florida, USA. We’ve been rigorously designing our entry for the 72hr jam and have been trying to keep our stream going to get some viewers!

Subvert

We’re working on a side scrolling sneaking game, SubVert, where you have to balance dipping ‘beneath the surface’ of various obstacles to avoid enemies! We’re hoping to start the prototyping fairly soon and start rolling out active builds!

We participated in LD28 last go around and had a blast. This time we’re looking to improve upon our inefficiencies and utilize a more narrow scope, so the game can be completed in 72 hours!
