Looks Like I’m doing this again

Well its a new year, a new Ludum Dare, a new website, and hopefully not a new “switch to Unity on Saturday” game. I will be using essentially the same tools as last time with a few changes, I hope to finally complete a game not using Unity this time. Wish me luck!

IDE: Eclipse

Theme: Sublime Text Monokai Extended

Language: Java

Graphics: LWJGL (OpenGL)

Other Libraries: JOML, maybe JBox2D

Art: Aseprite, Paint.net, Pyxel, Tiled

Music: This is where I struggle, probably a combination of sfxr, boscaceoil.net, FLS, and recorded sounds

Timelapse: Chronolapse

Streaming: OBS

Good Luck and happy 15th anniversary!

If you’re interested you can check out my compo entry Softlock (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=55143). It has some issues but I think its pretty good.

I just submitted my game Softlock (http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=55143) for the compo and I’m pretty proud of it. I think that this has been probably my best Ludum Dare yet and while the game has some issues it is much better than my past games. This was also the first time I’d ever done 3d in Unity before so I think it went well considering that, all in all a good time.

Well, I finished my game on time for the compo and it is actually something that I would be proud to submit, while I had a lot of issues with the raycasting and collision in my game I got most of them worked out. If I didn’t have school tomorrow I would add more levels, features, and submit for the jam, but alas I cant. My game is better than It could have been but also a lot worse because I tried to do so many new things instead of sticking to what I know, but that is part of what I think makes it fun. Now why am I salty? You may ask… Because your good ol’ pal Unity decided that he didn’t want to export, and so he didn’t… Grrrr…. Here are some screenshots.

So I added some art, still place holder. I also fixed the box pushing mechanic and added a smooth player following camera.

Good ol’ Unity!

Update 2

I’ve added doors that switch to new levels and have fixed the physics glitches, also I’m implementing pushable boxes for puzzles (green block). Still placeholder graphics tho.gif3

Update 1

So I’ve decided on doing a 2d puzzle platformer in a Mayan temple where you have to collect ancient artifacts (technology) to escapse, similar to 1001 spikes. I have some placeholder sprites and I’ve made some good progress already. I created a crisp movement and collision system using raytracing which is something I usually have problems with during ludum dare, and I made a script to read in levels from png images for easy creation. Here is an ok gif with weird black stuff on side, also it doesn’t seem to work unless you click on it :/

This will be my 4th ludum dare and hopefully my second fully completed project. I will be using mostly the same tools as I did last year, these will be:

Engine: Unity 5.4

Language: C#

Editor: Microsoft Visual Studio 2015

Art: Paint.net, Aseprite

Music: Beepbox

Sound: Bfxr, Audacity

Browser: Chrome

I think that’s it, I am going to make sure to plan out my game better this time and have a more realistic goal than in the past. I wish I could use Java for this but I’m not skilled enough in any graphical libraries yet and I am definitely not doing graphics in swing or something. Anyways, good luck and have fun!

Not my jam…

Well I wasn’t able to get as much done as I’d hoped and its unrealistic to finish at this point, I just have too many bugs and problems. I would do the jam but I have school tomorrow so that’s a nope. I blame bad unity documentation. My idea was a infinite monster fighting game where the monsters got progressively harder the more rounds you survive. The monsters dropped special coins and Xp which could combine to level you up. When you dies you were taken to an upgrade screen where you could upgrade your health, attack, and defense with your levels and you could combine the monster coins and apply them to your player to shapeshift into the monsters that you fight & get special abilities (Hydra: breath fire, Medusa: Freeze enemies, Yeti: giant snowball, etc). I implemented most of these features but they all had problems and I dont think that I can finish, I hate the unity animation system. I’ll come more prepared next jam and hopefully be lest rusty on my Unity syntax :)

This will be my third Ludum dare and hopefully my second submitted game, the tools I will be using are:

  • Unity 5.4
  • Visual Studio 2013
  • Paint.net
  • Maybe Aseprite
  • Beepbox.co for music
  • Bxfr for audio effects
  • Notepad++ for occasional text editor

Wish me luck! 😉
