About Matt Hartley (twitter: @m4tt53)

I love games and I love making games. I have used pure Java, Java with LWJGL and Unity in the past. At the moment I'm using my own C++ engine with Lua scripting.

Hey I’m in

I’m really tired but I’m in.

I’m using C with my own library I wrote for LD, Vim for text editing, Visual Studio for debugging, Paint.net/PyxelEdit for art and SFXR for sound effects.

My library only supports Windows at the moment so I think I will just submit my game for Windows and port it to MacOS and Linux afterwards.

Have fun everyone, that’s the most important thing 😀

I’ve decided to not finish this LD as I’m not very happy with my game and I can’t think of any other ideas.

I haven’t got much done because I’ve spent alot of time thinking about what I want to do and I’m not enjoying working on my current idea so I’m going to skip this LD and hopefully I’ll have better luck next time.

I think it’s great just to finish a game even if you have to work really hard to get it done in time but if you’re not enjoying working on it theres no point really.

Good luck to everyone else and I’ll see you next time!
I’ll probably still play some of your games.

Almost forgot to share my base code.

It’s just my simple Lua class system, you can find it here.

I hope I don’t fall asleep before the theme is announced, good luck everyone!

Here’s my desk setup:

I might switch between my MacBook Air and my PC depending on how It’s going.

As well as my engine I’m also going to use this Lua file with some keyboard keyCodes and my class system so I thought I’d share it, mhartley.me/lib.lua.

Not long now! Good luck everyone!

Engine source and Pyxel Edit

I said in my “I’m in” post that I was going to use my own engine so here’s the source, mhartley.me/engine.zip.

I’ve also been playing around with Pyxel Edit and it’s pretty awesome so I will probably use it as well as Paint.net and Pixelmator.

I’m all in!

I’m in for another Ludum Dare! I have Friday off and Monday is a bank holiday which is very helpful, means I can stay up really late. Here’s the tools I will use:

  • My own C++ engine
  • Lua
  • Sublime text
  • Paint.net on Windows, Pixelmator on Mac
  • Bfxr

Do I need to share the source of my engine? It’s just an executable file you write scripts for, the same way Love2D works. I wouldn’t have thought I need to but if you say I should then I will.

Can’t wait till Friday! Good luck everyone!

Explore Beneath the Surface

I submitted my game for the compo last night but didn’t get around to writing a post. The objective in the game is to mine to the bottom of the world and see what’s there, along the way you can collect materials to upgrade your tools and increase your rate of progress. I’m quite happy with how it turned out, the last couple of Ludum Dares I couldn’t think of any good ideas and didn’t end up submitting anything so I’m very happy I finished something this time.

The sound effects could be better and the fps can vary a bit but other than that I’m pleased with it. You can play it here.

My game so far

I’m quite happy with my game so far, here’s a screenshot.

My game so far

My main inspiration is a game called Dig-N-Rig, you are hopefully going to mine and find resources and build better tools but I’m not sure of anything other than that at the moment. I’m kind of just making it up as I go along. The last couple of LDs I could think of an idea I liked so I’m very glad I have this time.

I’ll post more screenshots tomorrow.

I’m in! Such excite!

This will be my 6th Ludum Dare and I am very in. I will be using:

  • Webgl via Dart
  • Paint.net
  • SFXR

I have also made a little webgl library that I will be using, you can see it here. And I also made a little breakout game to test my stuff, you can play it here.

Can’t wait to start, good luck everyone!

I’ve decided to stop because I have pretty much nothing done and I won’t be able to get anything done in the time left. All I have is a man with a torch that you can move around with the arrow keys, here’s a link if you want to see it http://code.mhartley.me/ld28.zip.

I usually use java so I decided to make a java library to use for this ludumdare with all the code I normally have to write every time, I wanted to embed a scripting language in it so I used rhino to embed javascript in my java application. The problem was that I only started making this library on Thursday, so I was far from done and had many bugs. So I spent most of this ludumdare trying to fix stuff which was not fun. I always seem to have problems using java and embedding javascript in it was a bit slow, next time I think I will try something different. Notch has been using Dart and webgl this weekend which looked interesting, maybe I’ll try Webgl next time, I will also make sure I’m completely ready before it starts.

Java problem

Does anyone know what this java problem is?

When I edit my spritesheet java is still drawing an old messed up version of it.

real

This is the current spritesheet it should look like.

oldFake

And this is an old messed up version with a green circle on it that java is drawing.

Does anyone know anything about this problem?

Back Again

I’m back again for another ludumdare, hopefully I will be able to think of a good idea this time. I’ve been working on a little java library that embeds javascript but it’s not finished and I will probably have to edit it during the weekend, I may also have to forget the javascript and just put my game code in the java library. You can have a look at it here if you like.

Other than that I will be using eclipse for java, sublime text for js, paint.net for art and sfxr for sounds.

Good luck everyone!

Giving this one a miss

Well I had a little go but I really don’t like this theme and all my ideas are bad, so I think I will give this one a miss.

Good luck to the rest of you!
