I’m in

Ok, read my Game Jam Survival Guide, doing the Costco run tomorrow, cleaned up my place.  I’m pumped about doing LD48!  I’ll be using the following array of weapons to create a 2d sprite based game:

The interesting part about this Dare is that I’m going to move away from 3d in order to tackle a 2d sprite game.  The most interesting part about that is that most art production is going to be done on iPad because Sprite Something is way better than other tools I’ve used on a computer for sprites and animation.  I’m going to TRY to set up a web cam to capture as I work on it but I fear most the work flow there will be lost for the time lapse so I’ll do my best to do screen caps.  The newest tool, EX2D I’ve been making dry runs the last couple nights to work out the kinks in my production.  I get the feeling now that I have a large tool box but hey, I want to declare what I see myself using!

Preparations complete…prepare for launch in 3…2…1…

I’ll be participating along with all you fine folk.  I look forward to it.  I’ll be using the following:

  • Unity 3d
  • Blender
  • Photoshop Elements and Pixelmator
  • Audacity
  • SFXR

Plus any other goodies and libraries I have in my bag.  I’m looking for an excuse to use some tools I just got so I hope I can.  See you all at the starting line.

It took a bit of research and a bit of waiting but my time lapse for Cat Splat! is available.  IN HIGH DEF!

48 hours of game competition, ~24 hours of development compressed into… 6 minutes!

Game submitted.  I didn’t hit everything I wanted to but I made a game!  Wow, that was a lot of hard work.  I learned a lot.  Tried to do a lot and in the end I like what I created.  I’ll do a post mortem after I sleep.  Until then, check it out here!

“A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.”

Well not exactly my case but it’s better to commit and release than to never do so.  So without further ado, here’s my first game I’m releasing to the public.  Cargo Island Drop!

Why so late?

I entered the competition late and I was unable to actually work on the game Saturday.  I had planned on working in the evening but became ill after having the Crab Pad Thai at a friends birthday dinner.  I made a post on Sunday, two hours before the deadline, that I didn’t make it but I wasn’t going to give up so here I am.    I had some extra time today so I spent some making up the lost time from Saturday.  I did it for myself, I did it for those who believed in me but I also did it just to show the Ludum Dare community that you guys are awesome!  Next time I’ll do better planning.  Until then, here you all go!

Misc info:  Cargo Island Drop was built in Unity.  Modeling done in Blender.  Texture work done in Pixelmator.  The music was stock music but seeing as I didn’t have time to make any and it isn’t an official entry into the competition I decided to leave it.  Everything else was done by me, even the art!  First time I UV unwrapped anything that complex!

Thanks everyone.  I had no intention of entering this competition and despite the set backs I still got a lot accomplished and I’m proud of what I’ve done.  Island Drop wasn’t finished by the deadline and my time is out but never fear because I’m going to finish it.  Here’s the last build I’ll make within the deadline but not the final build ever.

Thanks to #ludumdare, #unity3d, my friends, my girlfriend and my parents.  See you all next competition!!!

I’ve had RL interfere with what’s going on here.  I’m hooking up all the game logic now.  I have to do a GUI of sorts, make the rest of the mechanics work and get the game flow going.  THEN if there’s time I’ll make it pretty.

Moving Forward

I have a concept, I have a board drawing, I have my first untextured model and I’m starting to write code.  Some people have made some good progress.  I wasn’t even going to participate because I have a busy weekend but I couldn’t help myself.  The energy of others rubbed off on me so here I am at my first code jam.  I’m even taking a video blog to publish at the end so sorry for lack of screens.
