Although my “intro” & ending isn’t the greatest, I have actually submitted my first LD48 game! Going to play and rate a lot during the next few days, but right now I only have four and a half hours¬†left to get some sleep before I have to get up for work. Tomorrow is coffee day!

Participating from a cabin in the woods by the sea

Hello! I am entering Ludum Dare for the first time (I tried in the past, but didn’t manage to make anything playable). I’ve been working from a cabin with limited bandwith, so that’s why I’m posting for the first time now. In my game you control a professor who, for reasons you’ll have to find out, is trapped underground with a very special/cool gun. The only thing I have left for my game is the intro and ending (and possibly some music/sound if I can), so that’s what I’m doing for the last five hours! Oh, and I need to come up with a name…

Intending to enter MiniLD #28, with a plan this time!

While writing this I’m sitting in Boise, ID and going back home to Norway Wednesday the 27th. after a month long summer exchange. So my plan is splitting the development schedule up into two: Trying to get the programming/scripting/technical whatever during flight, or more if I get the time. I will be traveling for 12+ hours, so I’m hoping to get a lot done during this (if I manage to stay awake). Then I will try getting some graphics and sound done as soon as possible when I get home if not also on the plane. It will only be me and Game Maker up there while programming, so no interwebs or other stuff to distract me.
I’ve also got an idea for some gameplay and theme, but I don’t wanna share too much now other than it will probably be in the anti-war category. Don’t know if it’s been done before, but temporary(?) title is MWWAT?, pronounced “uhm, what?” and short for “Modern Warfare With A Twist?”. Just because it was the first title I came up with and doesn’t fit my idea at all.

My next post will (hopefully) be as soon as I get hooked up to the web after I land. Maybe I’ll be the first in the world to release a Mile High Game? :)

Maybe some jamming?

Hey there!

If anyone ever noticed my last post about Cynophobia for the MiniLD#21, I have to disappoint and say I never got to finish it. Never got around to do any actual gameplay besides a moving player with dogs watching him, but on the bright side I learned a few new tricks in GML (using Game Maker).

With an exam the 17th and a family christmas-get-together the 18th, I don’t think I will manage to participate this time neither, but maybe I’ll get something done for the jam. Really want to show (mostly myself, but also) everybody that I can do this! Will still be using Game Maker, besides that, I don’t really have any big plans… But I don’t like planning, it’s a lot more fun jumping into something hoping that you’ll find out how this swimming thing works somewhere along the way :)

Gotta become a little more active in the IRC too… Heading there NAO!

First first. As in my first at least.

Just googled, and found out that the greek word for “Fear of dogs” was Cynophobia, so that’s what I’m calling my FIRST game.
First completed game at least.. (I hope)

The story so far: I didn’t think I was going to participate in this thing yet because
1. I had other plans today
2. I hadn’t got any idea what kind of game I would make and
3. I’ve never made a game before, and have just started learning java in school.
But then
1. plans got cancelled
2. I thought I could make a game about my fear of dogs, and 3 is hardly an argument at all, right?

So I started my little project earlier this evening in game maker by creating a little red circle known as obj_player and made him walk around in a room filled with instances of obj_wall. Next, I made a dog (a circle in different colours with a tail) and named him obj_dog. If I ever get a real dog, I will definitely call him obj_dog.

So, I have a player and a dog (or dogs if I place more than one), what now? I found out that to add a little to the phobia-feel, I could make the dog(s) turn around to always look at the player. This prooved more difficult than I thought, and I sat maybe an hour calculating the players position relative to the dogs and some advanced sinus-to-degree-formulas that ended with the dogs never facing the right way and a divide-by-zero-error when the player and dog had same x-position. I was almost about to give up, but then I asked a good friend of mine who thaught me that I could just use a code called point_direction with the x and y values for each object and get the job done in two lines. So that’s where I am now, I can move around while a bunch of dogs are watching me as I go.
For Collaboration I might ask my roommate to make some music, or I’ll ask a dog to be my voice actor :) Or maybe vice versa..

I’m not sure where to go from here, but I think it will end up as either a puzzle game where you can’t go too near the dogs, or a “notgame” like the ones Jordan Magnuson are making, where I rant a bit about how scary and bad dogs are. Anyways, I’m learning lots of new stuff about the Game Maker Language! Screenshot-time (I may change some of the sprites later):

Uh oh…
