Even In Your Postmortem

Where do I even start with this?  How do I write a postmortem for a gag game?  Whelp, here we go.

I wanna start off by explaining the decision to make this monstrosity.  The theme this Ludum Dare was “You are the Monster,” which, while sharing a striking resemblance to LD25′s “You are the Villain,” is just thematically different enough that it squeezed its way into the running and ended up winning.

I dislike the theme for a number of reasons.  For one, let’s just resubmit my LD25 game and call it a day, right?  And secondly, the theme could really only be interpreted in one of two ways:  1) You are a mythological non-human creature that may or may not actually do bad things. or 2) You are a human who does bad things, a metaphorical monster.

The thing:  Doing it! berry_freakout

I’m hoping dearly that I can just have fun this year, instead of worrying about whether or not I’ll do better than last year.

Post-Jam Update

Updated EDDA with a few things!
Play it/Rate it? (Note: HTML5 version is the update.  To rate, please play the old version by downloading)

  • Better Text Viewage
    • Text is now higher on the screen, and not in front of dudes that make it harder to read
    • Text you are selecting no longer overlaps lines you previously completed
    • Text tweens from the spawn point to the final point, and now spawns all from one place.
    • You can now see the entire line, even before you complete it, for better word-selecting context!
  • More sounds!
    • Chatter sounds in the background
    • Boo sound when you loose
  • Better poetry-rating system (still not as complex as I’d like, but it takes into account the format of your poem now)
  • Fixed some animations.

Ancient Nordic Slam Poetry Action!

EDDA, my game about “weaponized poetry” is up now!  (technically it went up last night for the Compo but I was so tired so I went to bed instead of making a post.  heh)
I sort of feel like I maybe stretched theme a bit much this time, but I’m okay with that because I REALLY disliked this theme.  I was having a lot of trouble finding a way to subvert the theme or turn it on its head, while still actually… following the theme.
Anyway, I’d write up a proper postmortem like I usually do, but to be honest aside from the theme, everything I planned made it in the game, with the exception of some better text tweening.  I had some trouble reading arrays from a file in the beginning, so I had to write my poem array directly within Construct.  I’d really like to figure out that whole reading arrays thing at another point.

Anyway…

Ludum Dare Results Compilation

MadameBerry’s Ludum Dare Results Compilation

Results from Ludum Dare 24, 25, 28 (jam entry) and 31.
I’m really glad I’m seeing a steady improvement event to event!  I feel like I’ve been improving, too.

To be honest, I should’ve opted out of the “fun” category for this most recent one.
Overall though, I’m super happy with it!  Nice I made a top 30 in one, and top 100 in two categories!

The Making Of

The Theme
“Entire Game on One Screen”

I’ll admit, at first I really did not enjoy this theme.  I almost thought about passing Ludum Dare up this time around; I’m pretty tired of these “technical/mechanical limitation” themes.  I’d really love for Ludum Dare to branch out in its theme choices, more akin to Global Game Jam, whose themes range from words and phrases, to sound bites and images, with the technical limitations being present as optional Diversifiers.  Anyway, that’s a different story.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the theme this time ’round.  Instead of taking it in a “technical limitation” sense, I decided to use a visual of an old or tube monitor as a frame for the game, theming it around that.
If I had the time, I’d like to work on the end some more so it doesn’t just kind of cut off.  Other than that, I’m super happy with this game!

Gonna try

It’s been probably a year since last time I took part in a compo.  Well, better late than never.  Let’s get back in the game.

I should probably use something other than Construct 2 at this point but I’m so used to it.  Been meaning to re-install Unity onto the new machine but it’d take some time for me to get back into it, so maybe not for this jam. v.v
Art will be graphics gale or photoshop, depending on whether or not I feel pixel art is the best medium for the theme.
SFXR or BFXR for sound and (probably) CGmusic or (maybe) this thing for music.

WE SHALL SEE. =O

Oh lordy, it’s done!

Well!  Hence passes my first LD48.  I’ve gotta say, I’m proud of myself.  I didn’t know if I could pull it off.
Maybe I’ll polish this thing some more and re-release it on my blog at some point, I dunno.

So anyway, after everything, here’s It Will Grow.

I’ll give it a shot!

Hey everyone!

I’ve done a Global Game Jam before, but this is my first Ludum Dare.  I’m admittedly quite nervous, so I think I’m going to cut myself a bit of slack and just go for the Jam this time ’round.  I’m going to be using Construct 2 to give myself a bit more time to focus on the art, which is my primary skillset.  I’ll work in Photoshop and Graphics Gale for that.  For music, I have no idea what I’m doing; I’m not a sound person.  I’ll probably use CGMusic or some music generator like that.
For my first time, I kind of just want to test the waters and have some fun.  Nice meeting you all!
