My (mini)game is at a good point despite the little time I’ve had. I’ve added sfx and improved the look of some things. The game was pretty difficult, so I’ve made it so crashing spaceships have a chance of creating a new cannon which will shot randomly:

However, the game feels pretty automatic right now, and I don’t know what to do about it. I wanted to make an upgrade system, but that doesn’t look possible with just two buttons. I guess I’ll keep thinking about this.

I do have time!

I really didn’t think I’d have any time to do this this weekend, which made me pretty upset. I didn’t really enjoy the last LD, but this one looked better. However, I have found some time. Although I’ll only have about 15 hours total, I have something pretty solid now. I had this idea sort of in mind, so when I saw the two themes I knew I had to participate. Anyway, here’s what I have:

In this game you have to turn your cannon and shoot your bombs at spaceships to grow your planet. Also, you have to do it before you run out of atmosphere. The smoke from the spaceship crashes will help refill the atmosphere. If you are lucky (and if you aren’t too, it happens a lot of times) you can get hit spaceships to orbit your planet, and constantly refill the atmosphere so it never runs out.

Anyway, I’ll go to sleep now and try to finish this tomorrow.

I’ve finished it

Yay! My game is finished! However, it’s not something I’m really proud of. I haven’t put much energy into it, by far not as much as the last Ludum Dare. I didn’t feel very motivated -probably because of the theme-, but I did finish it, and I hope people have fun playing it. I had fun making too, but I’ll hopefully be more energetic next Ludum Dare.

Day 1

So, today is ending and I feel like I haven’t done all that much. I now know what game I want to make, but I’m not really very motivated, let’s see if sleeps improves that… Anyway, I hope I can finish the game tomorrow, it doesn’t seem impossible

I’m in too

I’ve began working on my game, and I’m still not sure what I want it to be. I don’t like the theme, and it’s been really hard to come up with ideas (I had some original ones, but I wasn’t sure whether they would be fun to play), so I’ve decided I’ll probably do a normal game, just with monsters (I know it’s not original, but despite what some say there isn’t a lot of room for originality with the theme). Anyway, that is what I have done so far, I’ll hopefully be more productive in the next hours.

Not bad for my first time

So, the ratings for my first Ludum Dare are in, and I can’t say I’m disappointed with my results, which are these (for compo):

Coolness 100%
#14 Humor 4.17
#23 Theme 4.30
#51 Fun 3.89
#60 Overall 3.91
#101 Mood 3.65
#116 Audio 3.60
#165 Innovation 3.72
#294 Graphics 3.50

These results are very good (especially Humor and Theme). However, I feel like I can do better next time. I didn’t really like the theme, and I did what I could to come up with a fitting idea (and got ranked 23 for theme :D), but I still didn’t really feel very motivated with it. I also had the opportunity to see what I needed to improve on for next time. Also, I would love to focus more than I did on the audio (and the graphics, but mostly audio).I’ll also try to do more (or some) self promotion, as I did none this time. So… I guess I’ll see you in August.

If you want to play my game, you can play it here: The magical piano flute

Wrapping it up.

Yay! I’ve just finished the last level and the storyline of my game, and despite the stupidity of the whole thing, I’m proud of the ending I’ve thought of. However, I’m worried that the game, despite being short, will be a bit too difficult and people will stop playing once they can’t go through something (that has already happened to me).

Still, I think I’ve done well for my first LD, but I know I could’ve done better, so hopefully I will next time. Now I have to fix some bugs and polish stuff before the timeline.

Day 1

You are shot by the police if you kill innocent people

Today is almost over and I think I’ve got a good amount of work done, but I don’t know if my game will be worth it in the end. The main mechanic (summoning falling pianos) is funny, but it’s hard to come up with good levels for it… I hope tomorrow I can come up with more levels.

I still think other themes were better, I found this one very limiting. Hopefully I’ll like the next one better.

At last, I have an (unconventional) idea

My idea

I’ve woken up at 4AM (1 hour after the theme was announced) and I’ve been 4 hours trying to come up with a good idea. I had 3 main ideas for unconventional weapons:

  • A remote with a button that can slow down time, but that makes time go quicker when you release it (to compensate the time loss)
  • A game where you had to find different objects and use them as a weapon for different enemies, with ‘weapons’ like flowers that you can give to the enemies so that they stop being angry
  • A magical flute that can summon falling pianos.

As you can see in the image, I’ve decided to go with the last one (I hope it counts as a weapon). I’m using javascript and webGL, alongside a small framework I wrote to make things easier. This is my first LD, so I hope it goes well.
