Core gameplay done

Posted by

With l little over a day left I have my core gameplay complete! This bodes well for getting some nice polish on the game before submission. This is a way better position than I was in the last LD. ld27_progress_2

So I’ve had an idea of sorts. It’s not fully formed so it’s a bit risky to go with but I’m kinda cool with that. I like the idea of not having the whole game design sorted before I start, it feels kinda exciting. The game is a meditative action puzzle game that’s points based. So far I have the board loading with a whole lot of numbers counting down from 10 to 1 every second.

This will be my 4th LD and my aim, as always, is to just do better than last time. My tools will be the usual suspects:

* Photoshop CC
* Unity Pro
* Pro Motion (if I go sprite based)
* Visual Studio Pro
* Coffee
* Instant noodles

Looking froward to playing everyone’s games!

Another one in the can.

I thought it might be touch and go this time but I’ve managed to pull one out of the bag. Not nearly as smooth a process as last time and the game is pretty basic but it feels great just finishing something. Postmortem maybe tomorrow when my sanity returns :) We did it again folks! Congrats to everyone who made it, and for those who didn’t, there’s always LD27!

Minimal game layout

Here’s the final layout for my game. Looking pretty minimal really. I’ve limited myself to a very tiny sprite sheet. I still have no idea if the game mechanics I have in mind are actually gonna work :(

My whole game will be made with this sprite sheet.

This’ll be my third time Ludum Daring. I’ve become quite addicted to this compo. Looking forward to seeing all the amazing stuff people will make. I’ll be using the usual suspects of unity + photoshop + modo (if I need some 3d) + pixen + Logic. It’s gonna be a blast!

Announcing Spectra, a post compo game.

Hi fellow Ludum Darers! Just thought I’d let you guys know about my post compo game called Spectra that’s just been released for Mac, PC, Linux and iPad. This game is a more polished and expanded version of my LD24 game EvoCube which managed 76th overall in that compo. The game got a positive response in the comp so I thought I might polish it up for commercial release and here it is. I’ve included some screenshots below from the new version. Check it out by going to http://albedogames.com/spectra

I’ve written up the trials and tribulations of my game on my blog for anyone who’s interested. The takeaway: ‘Avoid beta software’. Who knew??? My entry is here.

Nearly killed me like last time. Totally rewarding like last time. Looking forward to playing some of these games….. once I get some sleep and regain cognitive function. My entry is here.

Well I feel I’m pretty much on track. I’ve finished the core gameplay meachanics and controls. That leaves tomorrow for polishing the graphics and designing some levels. Sleepytime for me now…zzzz

Core gameplay is finished. Graphics, polish and level design tomorrow.

Yeah this is my second time attempting this thing. I really learnt a lot last time. Mostly about how little I knew my tools! This time I feel I know them a little better so I’m aiming for an improvement on my last attempt (which shouldn’t be too hard as it was rubbish).

Best wishes to all attempting this, I’ll be blogging my progress here if anyone’s interested.

My setup:

Engine: Unity3d

Editor: Sublime Text 2

2d Graphics: Photoshop, Pixen

3d Graphics: Modo 601

Sound: cfxr, Logic, Guitar, mic

Well the die is cast! I’ve submitted my first ever LD entry! It was a whole lot of fun to make and the feeling of accomplishment I have now is super high. It’s so cool to have a finished game in your pocket, no matter how stupid it is. 😛

It’s 4.47 AM here in New Zealand and I’ve just rolled out of bed for the final push to the finish. Last night I managed to get most of the graphics done + integrated them. Today I have to:

  • Get Sounds done
  • Add some game balancing (Its bloody hard!)
  • Integrate some animations.
  • Add a restart option.
  • Submit!!!!

Good luck to everyone in the final hours!

Here’s  screenshot of Universal Singularity where I left it last night. (This game is totally insane!).

LD32 Day 1

Ok so the visuals aren’t very spectacular but I managed to get my space dude moving around a room and correctly colliding with walls and such. This was all handled by Unity’s physics and the 2d toolkit.

The hardest part thus far was tweaking the physics params as it was difficult to get the right scale because I am using the 2d toolkit and that works in pixel units. I found that I had to drastically lower the mass of my player to 0.001 to get it to move. All ‘n all I’ve probably spent too long on the physics stuff but has been a good learning experience.

So I’ve got my player moving around a pretty empty room using physics but the game loop is complete and that’s the main thing.

Tomorrow enemies, gameplay, etc. Now… rest.
