I’m In!

This time it’s going to be a very interesting experiment for me. Why? In all previous LD’s I made a game using Flash. I wrote code in FlashDevelop in Windows 7 and used Paint.NET, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash etc. or graphics.

But now I don’t use Windows anymore. I switched to Linux Mint and I am very VERY happy with it!

Why I dropped windows? Well.. I was pretty much happy with Windows 7 for about last 4 years. But soon it’s going to loose support.. Now you even can’t buy it from microsoft website. Now MS forces Windows 8 which is complete disaster for me. I tried to use it several times and I came to conclusion that I just can’t. I feel too frustrated about user experience in it. I can’t understand why do they did that with Windows.. I thought OS should gain functionality and usability eventually but they just did opposite.

I tried Fedora and Ubuntu before. I liked them both, but I couldn’t manage to make them proper working tool for me.. But when I tried Linux Mint with Cinnamon environment.. It just FITS. Like I used it all my life! It is SOOO handy! And beautiful. So minimalistic, smooth and simple! I feel all power of my computer with it.

I’m going to create my first HTML5 game! I never tried it before. I use JavaScript in my work (I am a webdev) but not much (because I’m more like backend) so it is real challenge for me. I wrote some code to start: engine.js it will help but still I’ll need to write a lot of code right in the middle of LD.

I’m going to write the code in Sublime Text 3. I always wanted to code game in it! I’m going to use Chrome to test and debug my code. I’m going to use GIMP for graphics and Audacity for audio editing.

It’s going to be really FUN!

Well.. I’m not really happy with my entry this time. I loved the theme and was really excited about it, but didn’t do my best at all..

Here is what I made:

There is a lot of problems. It’s almost not playable.. but I learned A LOT doing it..

The original idea was much bigger: main character should have ability to travel in time and space to get to the places where some disaster happens and have only 10 seconds to prevent this disaster. Gameplay mechanics was inspired by Hotline Miami.. but I didn’t get even close to it…

Again.. I learned a lot. I will make games much better than this in the future.

How can I not be in?!

Here is my mandatory “I’m in” post. It is my 4th LD48 and I don’t know what could happen to not let me participate in this or any further LD48s! Since last year LD48s is most most important milestones in my game developer’s development. I’m looking forward to see what I will make in next two days. It is soooo cool! Right now I don’t have any idea about what will it be! And just in two days it will be something. So exitet!

What about my tools? This year I spent a lot of time with Java. And I like it very much. I made several prototypes with LWJGL but… In this LD I’ll still use ActionScript on Flash platform. There is several reasons for it: it’s much easier to deliver game to players via browser. Yes, I could make an applet, but Flash is much lighter. Also API for sound is much easier in Flash. So I think I can work much faster with  Flash and time does matters in Ludum Dare. So. Here it is:

  • ActionScript3.0 + Flash platform
  • Flash Develop as IDE
  • Starling Framework as graphics engine
  • inudge.net – Nudge is really nice little tool to create some music loops!
  • Audacity – is really powerful sound editor and it is totaly FREE!
  • Maybe I’ll use as3sfxr to generate some sounds if 8bit sound will be suitable in my game
  • If not, I’ll try to make something with FL Studio.

Well. Pretty much this is it. Getting ready to have a good sleep this night. Will buy some more coca-cola and coffe to stimulate my brain.

It’s going to be really fun! As usual.

One. Hundred. Ratings!

100hI don’t know why, but I really happy to know that my game got 100 ratings! It means that result will be pretty much objective! I want to thank those who spent their time to play and rate my game! :-*

I need to rate 78 more games to reach my goal of 10% of all games on LD #26.. Well. I have more then 48h to do it :)

I can’t get tired of being glad to see so much amazing games here!

My 100

I set a goal for myself: rate at least 10% of all games in this LD. Which is 235 games.
I really can’t understand how do some participants have over 200 rated games on the second day after deadline.. It takes a while to rate each game. You need to download it, unpack it, figure out how to play and try to understand everything what author tried to say by his or her game. Games made to be played after all! I capable to rate about 15 games per day spending about 2-4 hours on it.
Today I made my first handred. Looks like I should try to rate more then 15 games per day to complete my goal..
But by this post I want to note some of my favorites so far. Minimum comments. Just play them, if you didn’t already. Here we go:

Curiosity – geckojsc

Escape the Minimalism – klianc09

QbQbQb (cube cube cube) – rezoner

I just in love with music in this one. I would agree to play this for hours just to listen to this beatiful music. But it also have an amazing game play!

(R,G,B) – KilledByAPixel

Orb – Grouflon

Particles – Covenant

ReTri – jmf

Mustache Armies – TurboDindon

Potato Dungeon – _Rilem

* * *

I must say I wasn’t happy about the theme when it was announced. But when I started to rate games I took my thoughts back. I never saw so many wonderful games! I just feel happy when I play them! So many talanted people concentrated here. It is really great and I happy to be a part of it.

By the way, you can check out my entry :)

Just came back from supermarket with some food for tomorrow:

Some food for LD#26

Did no preparation for LD this time. Didn’t check my tools and did no warmup.

Will not make any time-lapse or such video. My work will be interrupted several times: I’ll visit some show, ride my bicycle, watch some movies this weekend.

But I WILL make MUCH better game then previous two times!

I will make flash game with:

  • FlashDevelop (ActionScript 3.0)
  • Starling

And I’ll try some random new tools for graphics and sound/music.

Good luck everyone!

Looking forward to check out your wonderful games!

“I’m definitely in” manifesto

Posted by (twitter: @michael_miriti)

For the second time. Last time it was very interesting expirience. It was challenge, scary and fun :)

This time I found interesting and useful all this “I’m in” posts. Got list of many interesting libs and tools to look at.

So here is my manifesto. I’m going to use it as check list while preparing my environment. Here we go:

  1. I’m going to participate in compo alone. If I fail finishing in 48 hours then it’s failed. I will not participate in jam. Jam is too lenient :)
  2. My platform is Adobe Flash
  3. My programming language is ActionScript 3, but there is a chance that I’ll try HaXe this time.
  4. My IDE is FlashDevelop. But sometimes Sublime Text 2 will help
  5. Here is some libs that I probably going to use:
    Starling as a rendering engine
Greensock classes (TweenLite and TweenMax) or Actuate if I’ll use HaXe
NME if HaXe will be choosen.
  6. I’m going to draw in Flash IDE, Photoshop and Paint.NET. Also I have the Wacom Tablet.
  7. XnView for basic image manipulations
  8. TexturePacker to create spritesheets
  9. To make some noise I’m going to use FL Studio, Audocity and maybe sfxr
  10. My files manager is Far Manager, It helps me automate many routines.
  11. I’m going to use both desktop and laptop computers (desktop is faster and have full hd display, but laptop can be used on sofa or even in bed). To make it easy to control them both at the same time I’m going to use Mouse without borders.
  12. My VCS is GIT.
  13. I’m going to use Snagit to create timelapse video
  14. My music player is Google Play Music (TODO: create a nice playlist)

I guess that is it! Good luck everyone! I am sure it will be much fun!
