Sadly, it was quite a fail, because setting up my tools was much tougher that I expected, and despite I couldn’t finish a proper game, but I learnt a lot.

About valuing success.

About debugging.

About versioning.

About webdev.

Quite hard times were coming in my life, forcing me to miss LD entirely for the rest of 2014 and in the entirety of 2015.

But now, as I created more content than ever for a game, and as I learned a new language, I want to be in, to provide a browser game for you this time!

Language: JavaScript! Lua was great, but the time of online content is coming.

Framework: PhaserJS! LÖVE is one of the best frameworks ever, but it’s time to learn something new.

IDE: JetBrains WebStorm! Quite a huge jump after Notepad++ I guess.

GFX: Paint.NET, as usual.

Sound: SFXR. I can’t forget the beautiful simplicity of it.

Music: Kev MacLeod! I’m about to realize that music is vital.


This time, I’d like to make a “promo game” for my worldbuilding project that has quite a lot of potential story-wise. I hope I can produce something successful, just like in late ’14 with The Last Beacon.

My week after LD#31 is gonna be freakin’ busy, so the timing was terrible – but hey, I wouldn’t even be the same guy if I would miss any LD!

Circumstances are exactly the same as previously – no direct connection to the Internet, Notepad++, Lua, Love2D, Paint.NET, and lotsa retardness.

It still might be possible that I can’t join however; we’ll see.

Okay well, I have this stuff which is buggy, almost has no gameplay and was not even made within 48 hours but only in ~10 but somehow I stll can be proud of.

What was bad?

I’d start with it, cause it’s the more. Practically everything went wrong.

– I didn’t even have Internet conection at home, so I couldn’t join the flow of the community with WIP shots and random tweets. It’s pretty important for me, as it’s a major “feature” of Ludum Dare for me.
– My first idea was good, but went bad: it was too far from what I imagined, an beyond a point, it overwhelmed several bugs as well. Finally, I couldn’t even do “basic operations” like return the value of the tile Player is standing on. At this point, I gave up.
– On the second day, I had other things do to (girlfriend visit – so yeah, kinda important!) so  had very little time. Maybe I simplified too much on the contribution itself.

The what was good?

Suprisingly, the most important thing went well.

–  I LEARNT. Both the abandoned and the fina game learnt me somethig bot facts and programming things.

So I learnt:
– that procedural generation is extremely hard sometimes, and even though you wouldn’t think, writin a proper random map generator might take much more time than creating maps by hand.
– that proedural generation is STILL helluva funny!
– that addig features in hurry is like using bubble gum instead of duct tapes. The result is the same.
– that even if ugly, hanging trains are god damn awesome.
– that you can create decently looking people even from 4 pixels.
– that fun can cover the mistakes in gameplay.
– how to create randomly wandering people.
– how to use sound functions in LÖVE properly. It’s the mos important since I was completely lost before.
– how to use color changing functions in LÖVE properly.
– how to create realistic trains (in behavioural aspects)
– etc.

So yeah, finally I learnt in LD#30 that the most important thing in Ludum Dare is LEARNING.

Fhuh, it wasn’t easay. I hope I can make you laugh with this extremely quickly made game. Sadly, there’s no gameplay that makes any sense, but instead, there are lotsa WTF things.

Actually I’m sad that I couldn’t make a masterpiece like several other guys does in every Ludum Dare events, but hey, it’s about fun, isn’t it?

Despite my contribution to LD#30 is gonna be a hard run, it doesn’t mean that I can’t vote! So here’s my vote:

Alchemy – I’d be happy if I could make a FMA-related stuff, but otherwise, no. Sorry
Another World – might be good, but I don’t prefer giving neutral votes. Also, I’m not sure about it
Break the Rules – always appears in votes, I never want it. I wouldn’t mind actually, but I’d be happy if something else would win.
Chaos – vague enough to provide a huge variety.
Choose a Path – replayability, here I come!
Connected Worlds – it was in Round 1, and I don’t want to feel as if voting was decided already in Round 1.
Day and Night – I don’t know. I just like it.
Destroy the System – I don’t get it.
Don’t stop Moving – I’m not gonna play 2500 Canabalt clones.
Do No Harm – pacific style, ehheheee, love it!
Fortress – surprised it didn’t happen yet.
Growing – more and more of the same stuff, WANT IT!
Isolation – kinda accurate description of my current state.
Lost in Space – not vague enough. Otherwise it’d be great.
No One Can See You – there was a great Unity game in one of the previous LDs, that covered it pretty well.
Randomly Generated – it seriously approached Final Round??? What’s going on???
Strength in Numbers – it’s rather a programming challange than a game theme.
You’re not Supposed To Be Here – self-reflection.
You Are Already Dead – same as Another World.
You Must Leav it Behind – why not?

Well, at the fourth time, I’m in!

…but it needs some explanation.


My state is a little bit hard, since I’m moving now, and I don’t have direct Internet connection neither. Though, my hert would bleed if I’d miss LD#30 – so I decided to check the theme at Saturday morning (since LD starts at 3:00 AM here) and to upload my game from library on Monday. So yeah, for the first time, I’m in for the jam, but I’m gonna go everything the same way.

Stuff is the same: Lua/LÖVE 0.9.0, Notepad++, Paint.NET, a lot of patience and maybe coffee.

I’m so happy because of the released ratings that I created a graph in LÖVE about my progresses during my LDs.

LOGO_3 My game, The Last Beacon now has a post-Compo version! Still WIP because I want to extend the game itself, but it has some major updates: – fixed bug that didn’t update laser beam when it destroyed a block 
– fixed bug that allowed player shooting a buggy laser beam while falling 
– reduced breakable block durability 
– grappling hook now doesn’t work on lvl1 
– improved (but still WIP) main menu

I’d like to port my LD29 entry, which is a LÖVE2D game into a different programming language, or maybe even to a different device (Android, etc.), how can I decide which would be the best choice? For example, I’m 90% sure I’d be able to do it for C++, with Allegro, but does that worth, especially if I want to monetize my game in the future?
