So, my third Ludum Dare passed. I must say that this time i was quite puzzled by the theme. so much that i had to take an extra day to just decide what to do xD that said, i managed to accomplish some goals that i set before the event, that is:

  • Challenge my drawing skills. in particular, i wanted to see how far i could go with animations. i did  not really worry about being clean on the work. i basically went wild , without worrying about details. it was a good choice, since after that i just had to calmly polish the work. also, the pressure that i usually feel when doing art was a lot weaker. so yeah guys, not focusing on all the details actually helps :O
  • I went for an …unconventional gameplay.  it was interesting because while developing i was actually testing if the idea could be fun. it’s true that the result is not exactly a game by common definition. Nevertheless i found it interesting, to play and develop.


And well, something that surprised me is the number of peoples that liked it! i never received so much feedback D: oh well, there’s a first time for everything, i guess xD

regarding the future of this prototype, i had some interesting ideas to expand the concept. i am rather busy these days ( fortunally with other game developing stuff X] ), but i hope to materialize these ideas asap.

As always thanks to all the players of my game , and thanks to the organizers and participants for this awesome event. I really had fun developing 10 Seconds. i am eager to join next LD!

What can i say guys, this was tiring , But MAN, if it was worth it!

It’s not the time for a post mortem, since here is 4 A.M. and i will shut down in a few minutes. I just want you to know that i had a lot of fun doing this game and, surprisingly enough, managed to make it fun ( at least for my standards xD).

I fell in love with this theme, since it pushed me to try a new design style for my project. In fact, i don’t use any preloaded image, and it’s all drawn into the canvas. The result is pretty fast even with a considerable amount of entities on the stage.

But hey, less chatting, since i am almost dead. let me know what you think of the game, and remember to write your scores on the comments! Cheers!!

First of all, i decided to not stream nor record my LD performance. Yep, strange as it may sound, the idea of beign watched while i work kinda bothers me °_°

Maybe in a few months i will change idea, but whatever, here’s the list of tools i will use:

Coding: Sublime text 2, createjs library . yep, i am going to work with html5;

Graphics: Gimp, Graphics Gale, [Tiled], my graphic tablet ^_^ ;

Sound and music: Audacity, MilkyTracker, Bfxr;

Motivation: SoundCloud, Spotify, Coffee, healthy meals and the right hours of sleep.


Yep, this is going to be fun! Bring it on!!     \>:D/

Humble post mortem

So, i finished this game at 1:30 . afterwards i barely remember how much effort i put on the legs to go to bed.

This was fun! it was my first entry to Ludum Dare, and i didn’ t know it was this much fun!

These 2 days let me think a lot about the effort i can put in things i enjoy.

Well, i don’ t mean saying that these 48 hours were idilliac. aou contraire!

I spent a lot of time wondering why some basic functions of the game weren’ t working. An example is the collision system. At the end i had to compromise, and use the full sprite as a collision box, so good bye depth and perspective.  But the time consumption was done, so i couldn’ t make sounds, music, animations or improve the art a bit ( i am not really horrible with drawing, but i need a lot of time for that :S).

on the last hours, i was attacked by sleepines, and i had to make the starting title screen and the gameOver screen. you can see the result

there were times when i wanted to just give up , thinking i could do it the next Ludum dare  with a greater preparation.

Today i am really happy to have resisted the temptation to do so.  even with the compromises, and the absence of polishing, i am really satisfied by what i’ ve done. And i learned a lot of useful things, like:

-Know better your tools. i had an hard time with the jaws library because i didn’ t practice in depth with it ( an example is the collision system). Also, you should be sure that the library you choose has a fair amount of documentation. Jaws library at the moment doesn’ t have a huge community support, so it was difficult to find a solution to my problems. createJS could have been a better choice, but at the moment i am not very fond of it ( i found about createJS a day before LD, too much late :S)

-Make your code REUSABLE. Even if it’ s something obvious, i understimated this tip a bit too much.  i could have written a lot less code, but oh well..

-make a a fair amount of breaks. they help you organize your thoughts.

I solved the bug, and now i can spawn kids at an arbitrary rate. I added road depth, and i organized the code so that to add a new character is as easy as steal a candy to a kid :3.

now , i need to figure out where to put the damn goat. But first, some hours to sleep. it’ s midnight in here. See you later, and good luck for all the other evil creatives of the world :3

Anyway, i figured out almost everything i want ( and especially i can) put into the game . Now i just need to convert doodles on paper into javascript. Does anyone know a good software for this?

If  one day you wake up and think ” i will make a game with the jaws library!”, just remember to not set the canvas dimensions with css. I spent a lot of time figuring out why all my sprites were horribly out of scale :S

As you can see, i am not an artist. if i got time, i will try to upgrade the art.

HTML5 with jaws lib and soundjs lib;

GraphicsGale for the graphics ( well, duh)

sfxr and (if i figure out how to use it) darkwave for sound and music.
