Grand crusade 0.9

Well there you go. 48 hours of me at the computer, programming, eating junk food, and not making art assets has boiled down to this.

My entry for the competition: Grand Crusade, (and its source code).

That being said, its not a very “competitive” entry. There are indeed end conditions… but they are not enforced, honor system and all that. There are some major bugs in some places that I won’t tell you about because I’m certain you can find others elsewhere. But hopefully my original intention is still able to shine though. The concept is that the game centers around an epic quest to save the world spanning tens of thousands of miles, but the actions you take are the bare minimum: you assign crew members on your ship. There are no other actions you can take,  you don’t fight alongside them, level them up, or have romance options with them. You tell them where to go. In the game world you may be coordinating a life or death battle with dragons in the mists of a foreboding mountain, but this is still only expressed in the crew you assign. Simple. Minimal.

I may polish this turd up some more in the future, as well as explain my thoughts on minimalism and have a postmortem on the compo or whatever, but all I want to do now is take a nap. Or videogames.

Tell me your thoughts, feelings or how badly the game is screwing up for you. I’d appreciate all it.

Engage ludicrous speed

Couldn’t sleep last night, so i spent even more time getting bogged down in UI stuff, since i don’t trust myself to program while sleep deprived.

Anyway, a new build HEREWhen going on a 623414 mile journey, you may feel the need to engage your cuisinart i mean hyperjets. Both of these have been removed in this build, and most likely will not be added in future ones.

Originally I wanted to spend all Sunday making new assets and balancing the game. But since i only just got all of the basic functionality down and have less than 4 hours, its clear I’ll only have time to do one. I hope you like the neon green ship. Its staying.

Halfwayish mark

Kind of an hour late to the halfway mark party. Uploaded a progress build hich you can play here. I spent the later part of the day doing some neat polish stuff and some game logic that is going to be hidden from the player anyways. I suppose you can’t see it, just trust me. Huge improvement

Still nothing is playable. Maybe I should be worried.

Iunno mayn.

Where did that nap come from?

I worked through half the day and then got tired out of no where, so i decided to take a nap. I’m glad i did though. Its not like the couldn’t have kept programming while a tiny bit drowsy, I’ve definitely done that before. But now I’m having a lot more fun programming now that I’m rested. (and making pizza).

So anyways, how does this sound for a story:

A evil aura radiates throughout the kingdom.
The grand necromancer Eshior Bhat has undertaken the ritual to summon the demon prince Ny’Deish to this mortal plane.
When the ritual is complete, Ny’Deish shall tear both the earth and heavens asunder.

You are Captain of the SS ___________, an elite skyship of His Majesty’s Royal Navy.
You have been personally tasked by His Majesty to save the your homeland, the world, and existance itself.
You are to hunt down and destroy the phylactery of Eshior Bhat at the peak of Mt. Eshreil on the other side of the world.

You call upon 43 of the kingdom’s finest soldiers, scholars, and craftsmen to your aid.
All 43 accept with profound gratitude.

The journey will be arduous, let His Majesty be with you.

Yea, I can’t think of a name for the ship. Anyone with Ideas?

Neon green pirates

Woke up this morning at 7:40 something, and got straight to work (after a nice half-breakfast).

I added another page of documents last night. This morning i realized i would need at least. This game is just killing my screen real-estate. Yes, I have been playing Papers, please.

Whats the game about? Iunno. It looks like neon green pirates or blue arrows or something? I might as well add the story blurb as soon as its completed. The font I’m using is “Jenna Sue”. I picked it because it was handwritten, fancy, and readable. Of course you wouldn’t be able to tell that last part.

so what if it the font isn't readable?

This totally does not look like a butt.

As of now, everything is going smoothly. The only thing I haven’t started is planning out all of my tasks… so there might actually be more I haven’t started. OH WELL.

Very early mock up

Minimalism Huh?

Sure, I’ll try it out. I have only done LD once before and something like 2 years ago

I’m not entirely sure what I’ll be using. It’ll either be good ol’ AS3 or I’ll give Game maker studio a shot. Trial by fire and all that. For now I’m still working out a concept.
