You Only Get One Life

I am quite excited about how my first foray into development with Unity came out.

So far, my abstract little game has been well recieved. It features randomly generated creatures and music that I think gel really well with the theme. The only thing I wasn’t able to get done in time was the scrolling background particles that make it easier to see that you can move. Was really easy to do, just put it off until last minute, but I added it in a post compo version. Check it out and rate if you like!

Will be using Constuct 2, Unity, Gamemaker, or perhaps a library and more traditional IDE.

Should be fun!

Good luck to everyone!

Hello Hoverbot!

Yah, says the robot, thanks for bringing me into being!

Noo, says the robot, why couldn’t you make me better!?

Aghhhghahaha! yells the robot!

Haha! Excuse me being a tad delirious, here is some meaty stuff:

Making games is fun!

Packaging games for others to play, trying to make a timelapse of collected photos, and feeling really tired are things that are not fun!

Anyways, I am so happy, as I just got those unfun things finished (minus timelapse, which just was not working, so I kind of…erm…gave up), and here are my thoughts:

  • Learned new tools quickly, and managed to make a complete game
  • Made more complex graphics and collision than ever before (but they are still quite simple, don’t get too excited, folks!)
  • Finished everything up despite the approaching deadline, go TEAM ROCKET….oh…I meant to say TIME MANAGEMENT!
  • Already rated a game, gonna go rate some more!
Not So-Successes:
  • Did not get a truly playable prototype quick enough, I had something running, but it wasn’t really playable
  • Graphics were cool and complex, but did not get to round out the entire package
  • Music creation, which I love, was pushed till the end, and I made a psuedo-decent tune in a few minutes and then shipped the game off
  • Lacked knowledge of tools/language I was using
  • Thus overall, some more polish was needed, and I needed to be more focused and a tad quicker
Ho0hum, this blog post shall come to an end. Play my game to see lil roboty in action!

Oh, wow, lots of people apparently! Best of luck to you all!

  • Slick2D Game Library
  • Reaper, Audacity, BFXR, SFXR (Music/Sound)

Heyo, everyone, I will be participating in this Ludum Dare Compo. Sadly, I have a bit less time than usual this weekend, so the end result won’t be too huge, but perhaps it can still be stimulating and interesting! Good luck everyone!

T – O – G – E – T – H – E – R      A – L – O – N – E

I thought I would share some thoughts on how my first Ludum Dare compo game came out. It is an object avoidance game with a simple but unique take on the idea of being alone. It also features a song where I sing. If you feel like playing it, the link is here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-22/?action=preview&uid=7245

Da Big Problems I Faced

  • Deciding on an idea – Even though the theme I thought most about before the announcement was “Alone”, I still had trouble getting started on my game.
  • Implementing my ideas – I wound up scrapping my first two ideas (although luckily I could keep some elements and graphics) because they just didn’t seem that fun and also were getting complicated to implement. I need to follow the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principles more closely.
  • Comfortableness (<—- I don’t like this word) with environment – I like to jump into things and pretend I am pro at them, only to learn….I AM NOT! The confidence is nice until confusing errors crop up! Oh well! For some of the results of this, check out my ugly source code!
Da Semi-Big Problems I Thought I Would Face But Somehow Avoided
  • Taking too long on graphics – I am usually a perfectionist, but I managed to manage my time quite well. I didn’t spend too long on my extremely simple graphics and was able to spend more time getting everything to work and run kind of how I wanted it.
  • Non-Completion – Although I pretend I am pro, some deep down part of me knows I am not…yet, anyway : ) Thus, I was a tad worried I might not actually complete or create anything. Haha! Take that, deep subconscious!
  • Getting Bored – I thought I might meander off into the I need to watch some movies to take a break and get into a creative mood. Luckily, I stayed mostly on task!
Whelp, that’s about all I can think of for right now. Try out my game if you are intrigued or if you are not….that means EVERYONE! Ha, got yah!
I had loads of fun, can’t wait for next the Ludum Dare. Off to play/rate loads of awesome games!

My game has been finished, and the above is its title. Sadly, my entry post got rid of the spaces so the title looks really ugly…oh well.  Learned a lot and had fun. Check out my game: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-22/?action=preview&uid=7245
