Euro-belated ‘I am in!’ + theme grumbling

Time to execute!

Was already planning to join, but forgot to chime in – using:

  • Unity3D
  • Inktscape
  • Audacity
  • + usual suspects from previous LDs

Unfortunately my regular Ludum Dare pal Jod is inconvenienced the first day due to Sinterklaas~ hope he’ll join in with his own LD game tomorrow.
No such saintly-present occupations for me tho! So going in with LD for the compo.

The theme is… interesting. While I do not like mechanic themes in general, this one has some ok potential. In that sense it is a very light theme, mostly prohibiting certain type of ‘big’ scope game views – which is something that you don’t want to do in LD much either.

But to make this a bit more flavour-directional, I am selecting a sub-theme for myself from the other Final themes.
Thought of three game concepts, and picked on to execute on before 1200 CET, so kind-of on schedule. Subtheme of that game: Machines.

TIME TO EXECUTE!

And it is done: Exiled to the Beyond

I am ok with the results! Even with a day thrown away I got pretty nice stuff, and the looks & sounds improved a lot at the end. Gameplay is maybe not as strong as I had wanted though.

The opening screen.

You are exiled to a sinister Realm – can you survive?

In the name of progress, I give you my starting screeeeen! (game to be submitted soooon)

Mystery! Hexes! Colors!

Setsbacks & not finished! Making it a Jam~

This LD I had a very unproductive first day, which set me back and put a dampener on my spirits. I wasn’t satisfied with the looks and kept re-doing things.

But a good nights sleep & Sunday turned that around for me again – Still liked my concept and found inspiration in a slightly adjusted background & story which I could fit in.

Alas, even with a day of hard work, the re-hashing of the visuals cost so much time that I did not finish in Compo-time, so I am going to make it a Jam, and see how far I get.

Indentured Exile – Teaser:

You are sent through the gate with just some food and a scattering of tools. Criminal exile: it is an dump & forget solution, but they may be light at the end of several gates!
Survive in alien lands and keep your not-so-savory workers in line, while you progress through increasingly harsher worlds.

Progress so far

Lesson Learned: Don’t try to learn new systems during LD

Theme: Nice, I like it
My concept: Good, I thing I got an interesting Civ-ish concept that might be small enough.
Progress: Arrrrgggl, spent the last hours puzzling through new Unity3D GUI interfaces, trying to make stuff work.

Next: Ditch current attempts, go back to tried-n-true interfaces. Lost too much time on nonsense! :'(

My ‘progress’ :(

I am in! LD#30

In for my 6th Ludum Dare! My tools are:

  • Engine: Unity3D
  • Graphics: Photoshop / Inkscape
  • GUI: NGUI (or try the new UGUI in Unity3D 4.6 Beta)
  • Sound effects: SunVox / sfxr / Audacity
  • Music: SunVox / www.abundant-music.com / FL Studio / I-don’t-kn0w-music-is-hard…
  • Other potential stuff: Poly2Tri for lots of rasterization tricks, my mini Unity3D tool-belt class collection

Will aim for a Compo entry, but I got the monday off as well, so an option to slide to Jam is available if I need another day. 😀

Mini LD #53 – The Awakened World – Finishhhed

Posted by (twitter: @McDaan)
Sunday, July 20th, 2014 11:45 pm

Early morning last minute push FTW!

Yesterday the progress looked grim, I was the main bottleneck in the programming departments, Jod had his stuff done. Ah the problems of Team work.

Concept:
This world has a doomed fate! Only you can save us, by manipulating the world through time travel on a grand stage in the struggle between Awakened and humans.

Play it & Judge it:

My contribution: a pretty interesting World simulation. Pity you don’t see much of the details…

Jod’s part is, as always, strong story, mood & writing!

MiniLD53 – Team JoDa kicks off!

Posted by (twitter: @McDaan)
Saturday, July 19th, 2014 5:30 am

This is the first time we (Jod & I) are doing an LD together, been doing compo’s separately, but decided to kick of some real Team Action!
Also the first time that we participate in a MiniLD, but that shouldn’t matter much. We’re keeping to Jam-rules within Compo time.

Concept:
The theme is pretty OK! Unlike some LDs I saw good possibilities immediately. But with two people it takes more time to crystalize one. We looked to combine our strongest points: Storytelling (Jod) & Simulation (Joror).
We settled on a time-travel game where you try to prevent a worldwide apocalypse! You can make three small changes to the timeline, and see how that impacts the world over a 100 years, hoping to prevent the Bad Stuff(tm). A mix of simulation of world-powers & storytelling events to steer the outcome, and a protagonists’ perspective to boot!
So what happened 100 years ago? Well that was when the first human Awakened.

Work work work:
First thing: time is limited, ideas are grand. They collide. So we work hard and cut where we can at first. And key to that is a good work environment! Did I mention it is over 30 degrees (86 Fahrenheit for the imperialists ;)) over here and we’re in a loft appartment?

Re-LudumDare #2 – Reign of the Mad Chief – Finished!

Posted by (twitter: @McDaan)
Friday, July 18th, 2014 6:16 pm

So I have been doing my second Re-LD (doing old LD themes in LD-comp time), and I finished #2!
(this post will be a bit of a repeat from my last, but arrr I’m tired…)

Theme:
Construction / Destruction

Concept:
You are a starting barbarian ruler, and you plan to build a grand castle!
Who has to pay for the expenses? Well, time to squeeze the peasants & raid the neighbors!
But at the end of the year they will come for revenge. But your castle should withstand that, no?

Mechanics:
2D Terraria-block craftyish, placing structures over blocks (throne rooms, doors), or outdoors (soldier tents).
Mobs/soldiers move in clumps and fight whatever they bump into (opponents, doors, etc) – if they get to the throne room / command tent you are dead!

Progress:
I got music & sounds & archers in this last day, and plenty of balancing, so I am pretty happy. Did this one in Jam time again (3 days instead of 2), that seems to be more my pace. Tomorrow, Jod and I will be doing the Mini-LD together. Arr so much LDing!

>Play it!<

(linux built also on page)

Re-LudumDare #2 – Build, Raid & Rule

So I have been doing my second Re-LD (doing old LD themes in LD-comp time), an this is my progress on #2!

Progress:
Started yesterday afternoon (CET, about 24 hours ago). Doing well, a bit short on time (I have got about 3-4 hours to go, maybe 8 if I shuffle some).
Engine: Unity3D, primarily in 2d mode. Most art is mine, only the wood/stone textures are free stuff, and NGUI for UI.

Todo:
Finish basic fight mechanics, balance them a bit. Then hopefully add some archers / more complex opponent units.

My Re-LD#1 final results!

Alas, I did not finish the game as intended, the gameplay aspects are limited, but I like my village simulator!

And in that capacity I will share my ‘Village Simulator for Guardians in training‘ , with:

  • Over 4 jobs!
  • Birth & Death
  • Mate-seeking
  • Gender-neutral kiddy production! (anyone can make em, but only in pairs)
  • Random names for people & village
  • Seasonal production changes

Re-LD #1 – In a Jam? Make it a Jam!

Posted by (twitter: @McDaan)
Monday, July 14th, 2014 7:49 pm

So my self-set ‘Deadline’ for my Re-LD #1 (doing Ludum Dare #1 on me own, as if it were a LD right now), has passed, and this is the result:

The Theme: Guardian

My game concept: You are a guardian spirit for a small starting town, you can curse & bless the villagers to assist them in their struggles, and the pending Demon Invasion that only you know about.

Progress: As usual, my concept was way too big for the time given (about 1.5 days, sorta a 36 hours LD) Plus spent time on things that are not really that important, like name generators, and prettier models, instead of a 2D solution which might have been faster.
I got a nice little economy simulation going, where villagers pick a job, a house to live in, age, consume, and start reproducing. But I need to beef up player involvement, or it is just a village-watching-game.

The decision: I could say that this is my deadline, tough luck, and stop the game devving. Or I can say that I am doing a ‘Jam’ instead of a ‘Compo’ (though I don’t think there was a ‘Jam’ for LD#1 ;)), and allow myself one additional day.

I like the concept enough to stretch it a bit, and give myself 6 additional hours tomorrow to wrap things up.

Firing up the thang: Re-LD #1

Posted by (twitter: @McDaan)
Sunday, July 13th, 2014 6:39 am

I got some time off this week to work on game-devving, but I need to re-spark that game dev thang after a kind of summer-break doing other fun stuff™.

Ludum Dares & other jams usually fire that right up, but there are no Jams going on right now.

Soooo…

I am re-doing old Ludum Dares I never participated in!

First up:

Re-Ludum Dare #01 – theme: Guardian
Deadline: Mon 14th 23:59
(grace period: 03:00, since I always use those)

Next up (if I enjoy this method):

Re-Ludum Dare #02 – theme: [Unknown]
Deadline: Wed 16th 23:59
(will only look up the theme on Tuesday, for that real LD-feel)

Mini-LD 53 – Team JoDa will compete!

Posted by (twitter: @McDaan)
Sunday, July 13th, 2014 6:21 am

In the last bunch of LDs, me & my bud Jod have both been making our own solo-games, but doing so in the same location/room for social support & pressure. Cuz we like doing our own thing.

Yet we wondered how a Team effort would work out, and agreed to try that next LD, with a tryout to see if we would not bash each others (creative) brains out in such a process. 😉

So lo-and-behold there is a Mini-LD planned next weekend! Great fortuitous batmans!

It is done. 14 Hours is possible.

Posted by (twitter: @McDaan)
Sunday, April 27th, 2014 6:58 pm

Pfew, 14 sure is less than 48, but still got something done, even with a crash that made me remake stuff for an hour or two.

I introduce “Dig or Die” a somewhat dark/somber post-apocalyptic game:
Survive in the bare tundra, after the rest of the world has nuked each other to pieces.

Game mechanics / UI clarity not 100%, but ok enough. Music literally made in a few minutes.

Now sleep.
