LD 27 – Review

So I post it now cause I was wasted yesterday after those 30 hour of programming !

Here is my LD27 Entry : Test Chamber

It was my second LD 48 , and i really improved a lot in my knowledge of SLICK2D. I’m really impressed of the difference between my LD 26 and my LD 27 game.

I felt like the theme was great, I had multiple ideas right away , but the 48h restrictions hit me hard.

This time, i used multiple map, home made graphics ( even tough i’m really BAD at it ), better collision engine ( but not perfect ), included powerup / weapong / lever.

The good

– Better understanding in SLICK2D. ( But i will probably move on to another one, libgdx )

– Good planning ( but I was a little short )

– Level Design . I enjoyed making those maps so much !

The bad

– 48 hours is hard for me . I slept around 8 hours, watched some streams for 4-5 hours, barely ate but i was short in time ( I only made 10 maps, i wanted 20 ).

– Not enought Debug ( but i think it’s kind of ok ). But it’s not cool to find a bug a 1 am when the LD stops at 3.

– Graphics . It’s better than last time, but god i’m slow and not good at it … Lots of improvment to do here.

Overall

I’m pretty happy with my game. It’s something i’ll be proud to show to someone. This weekend was exhausting, but F*ck it,  it was worth it.

After sleeping much more than expected ( up at 11 am … ) I’ve started what i’m worst at : Graphics.

I’m not a designer , not a good drawer but at least i’m trying .

I’ve made all graphics by myself ( and i’m very happy with it since i’ve learn a lot and  usually I use something from the web )

And my game is UP. I’ve worked between 15 / 20 hour . My goal that weekend was to finish a game (even if it was a very basic one ) and I feel good about it.

If you want to try it, i’ll be very happy with any commentary :)  Survival Shape

I’m not here to make a good score, but to prove myself I have this passion inside me.

This LD was very exciting for me, reading all those posts about awesome games idea . It was very motivating and i’ll definitely participate in the next one !

 

First Day !

I’ll stop for today, i’ve been working for LD for about 10 hours now .

I wasn’t very comfurtable with the theme , so it’s very basic.

Here’s a screenshot ( i’m pretty done with the game mechanics )

You are the last Triangle of the universe and the other shapes want you dead.

The triangle can shoot and move ( rotate with left & right, go forward with up, spacebar for shoot ). If you are hit by another shape, you lose 1HP ( you have 3)

What i still have to do :

  • Improving some menu
  • Sound off / on
  • Difficulty selection
  • Explosion animation ?
  • Some bonus to pick up

Anyway, my first day was very exciting. I’m here to learn and my goal was to end a game ( even if it’s a very basic game , i’m happy with it )

Okay so I decided to wake up early ( 9 o’clock ) and I wasn’t very excited about the theme …

I decided to dev a kind of “Geometry Wars” thing . You are a lonely shape and other shape want you dead !

First Time LD

I will participate  without any special expectations except finish a game ( i’ll go for the JAM ).

My goal is to improve as a junior developer, i will work around 8hours a day for this LD.

Tools :

  • Engine : Java / Slick2d
  • IDE : Eclipse
  • Level Design : TiledMapEditor
  • Graphics : Paint.NET / Photoshop ( But i’m bad at it so i will probably take some image under Creative Commons license from http://opengameart.org/ )
  • Sounds : My mouth 😀 and/or some stuff from http://www.nosoapradio.us/
