So, this LD was my first one. I’m really proud of myself and my partners for accomplish the achievement of finishing our first playable game. I would like to thanks all the good people who gave us feedback and ideas of how to improve our little piece, that was really great, guys !

We, The Imaginer Studio, are going tô continue to develop a full game based on our entry. You can check the progress of our game development on my personal Twitter @jlcarruda. We will create eventually an account for the game

Unfortunately, the last weeks before new year, my Internet was cut off due to some economic problems. Got it back yesterday :\
I’m rating all the games I wanted to play in those weeks xD

Could you guys help me and rate my entry? I really would like it :3 Heroes-of-Okarine-logo

Hey nice indie devs! Could you guys please vote my LD37 entry? Only need 6 more votes 😉
It wasn’t a good build, but we are working on the entire game based on it, with a lot more content and new gameplay! And your votes and feedback are our fuel to make it happen!

Thank you guys! \o/

So yeah, we made a Game, but … its not fun.

Heroes-of-Okarine-logoOk, so I’ve decided to post this here, because I know how supportive you guys are, and how all the gamedevs here are awesome. And since I don’t have much experience making games, so I think its a good time to just swallow my pride and be true to myself: the game me and my friends made have potential, but in the way it is now, its not fun.

I guess this happens to everyone in gamedev. I realized that the game wasn’t fun while I was implementing some wave stuff for it. After playing it a lot of times, I just realized it don’t have the core aspect we had in mind: Strategy and Good Coop. So yea, we made a game by ourselves in 3 days, and thats a REALLY GOOD THING for us, especially because it was our first finished game, but now that I set down with me and my code and thoughts, thinking on how I can implement those core ideas in the game we made, I just entered in a Blank Mind state.

I couldn’t figure out how to implement in terms of gameplay the aspects of Strategy, Good coop and Challenge inside the game as the way it is now.

So … I’m appealing to this beautyful community to help me on this. I don’t want a good idea, I just want to made the game enjoyable . So if any of you guys have a good idea of how to do this, I would be very grateful! Just drop a comment on the game itself, or here in this post, or on my twitter @jlcarruda

Thank you in advance :3

First Ludum Dare we joined! – Post-Mortem of “Heroes of Okarine”

So, I’ve been busy those past ludum days, working on some bugs and feedback from friends of mine who played the game for us.
Anyway, its Post-Mortem time(no -mortem, cause we are going to work on the game until we actually launch it!) of our Jam entry: Heroes of Okarine!

We are together a new game development/web design/illustration/mobile app company named Imaginer Studios. Born here in Brazil, and looking foward to ingress into the indie game dev industry. We are 5 partners on the Imaginer Studios Logocompany, but only 4 participate on this LD.

  • Paulo was our illustrator and artist. He made the Hercules, the zombies, the Okarine and the platforms on the game. The background we got from a free sprite website cause we didn’t had much time to make something good as we though.
  • Lucas Guilherme was the image curator and made part on the Game Design with us. He helped by being harsh with us and pushing us more (more like our bard) and by making some image treatment.
  • Tiago Aguiar was the leader Game Designer. Me and him though about the game core concept, history and level design (even it wasn’t a good one xD)
  • Me, Lucas Arruda, was the Game Developer. My job was simple: code all the game by myself.

  • Game Maker: Studio 1.4
  • Photoshop
  • Pyxel Edit and GM:S Sprite editor

What went well

  • The effort from all the partners was a huge thing for the development. It was our first time making a game (and for me, the first time I’ve actually finish one on a playable state), and we all had several difficulties, but we all made a lot of effort to submit the game as we imagined as near as possible.
  • Me, Lucas and Tiago live near each other, and we stayed all in on the Tiago’s house, all the day, for making this project come alive (the reason is in the “What didn’t go well” section).
  •  Tiago’s Mother made a lot of food for us \o/

What didn’t go well

  • Lucas and Me, on the morning of Sunday, lost the Internet connection in our houses (cuz the universe wanted to make a trial for us, I think). So we needed to run to Tiago’s house to the game be possible to exist.
  • Multiplayer Bugs. On the LD version that we were trying to finish with Multiplayer, I tried my best to implement it, but whenever I created a new player object on the room, my objects inside that room just glitched in an ugly way (I’ll try to put a screenshot on my twitter ).
  • No music. This was a little sad for all of us, but on a group of 4 who was actively developing the game, no one knew how to make some good sound effects and music for the game.
  • Lack of other heroes and depth. The game itself is a simple game. We imagined it with a lot more stuff in it, and the game concept itself has a really good theme to work on. But we had little time to show you all the might of what we actually tried to make.
  • We only have a Windows version, because we use the GM:S Standard. Thats a huge drawback, unfortunately.

Well, that concludes the “post-mortem” of our game. I would like to announce that we are going to continue and develop the game after LD.

If you didn’t test and rated the game, please, do it :3 (click on the game logo on top of the post). Every kind of feedback is welcomed, so be free to comment ^^.

Aaaaand we are finished!

And we finished our entry! Me and my friends were able to finish the “Heroes of Okarine”, a “defend the objective”, 2D platformer game.

The game isn’t the way we imagined the first time (we imagined multiplayer, other heroes, etc … ), and we had some problems with big scope, but we are definately continuing to develop it!

I hope you guys at least enjoy the idea (and difficult) of Heroes of Okarine, our first game ever made. ^^

How about a “protect the objective against the horde” game?

Me and my partners are going to apply to Jam, and we came with the Idea of making a multiplayer “objective defense” 2d sidescrolling game!
A little mockup of our level.
