Game Jams for Weight Loss

Funny that the theme was “Shapeshift” – my jam partner and I were talking the other day, and we both noticed that we’d lost 3 pounds during the jam! I went down nearly a belt size.

Through the rating period, we’ve been listening to feedback! There are some key improvements that need to be made, but overall the response has been great. We’re really proud of what we’ve done over a weekend.

Check out Word Warrior here, and let us know what you think!

There were a few lessons we learned participating in the jam too! If you’ve never competed in Ludum Dare but you’re thinking of it, here are some pointers for you:

  • Prepare ahead of time for the jam. Set up a repository and test it! We worked in separate projects and nearly missed the deadline due to bugs when merging.
  • Narrow your scope at every opportunity (and don’t feel guilty about it). The audience doesn’t get to see the cutting room floor, but if you put in a half-baked feature they’ll notice.
  • Don’t skip the small stuff. Simple touches go a long way. Sound effects, music, screen shake, etc. Of all the games I’ve played, the ones with these features “pop” the most.
  • Make sure you’re eating right. Don’t do what we did and starve yourself. Eating right will give you the energy you need to stay up late and be productive.

Thanks everyone for the feedback so far, and great job on your games!
