The Ancient’s Ones post mortem

So what happened for my first VR game?

Capture_d'écran_091116_053255_PM

What went right:

  • succeeded to “finish” the game both on PC and Google Cardboard, there was plenty bugs but the game was playable (unlike the two last ones)
  • worked hard on audio, I think the result is ok
  • the overall ambient seems to be immersive

What went wrong:

  • spent to much time on useless assets like 10 different type of rocks
  • some assets and effects weren’t Cardboard compatible, especially light effects
  • wanted to make too much in 48h (I planned too much junctions in my scenario but it was too much time consuming, the result is only a 3 endings scenario)
  • still no time to make textures and shaders (again)

Play the game (including updated version)

Small update: the same game …but with no bug (almost)

Hi, just a word to announce a small update which fix all the main bugs my compo game had (PC and Android Cardboard). Otherwise it is still the mighty original 48h compo game.
Let me know if you have any idea of improvement, I’ll try to spend some time on it later!

Oh and maybe I’ll also write a short post mortem soon

Well it’s not the mighty game I was expecting, but I least I finished this 48h VR game. It’s an exploration game with a small scenario including alternate endings. There is also a classic PC version for those who don’t have a Google Cardboard. Post mortem coming soon (why did I spent time to make 10  different type of rock instead of polishing the existing asseeeets) and maybe a more polished version if I have time.

PLASMA 0.3 (HTML5, GPS, Realtime, …)

plasma

A few weeks ago I posted my LD32 entry, PLASMA, a prototype of a multiplayer mobile game where your unconventional weapon is your “plasmartphone”. It was a more a proof of concept than a game. I’m still working on it but here is a bit more playable version :)

How to play ?

  • Take you phone (Android, iOS, Windows Phone) with internet & GPS activated
  • Take a few friends with their phone (it’a multiplayer game)
  • Go outside, in a parc for instance, take your distances (10m at least) and start the battle !!!
  • Shake your phone to load, point you phone in another player direction & touch “Fire” to shoot

Warning !

  • This is still a prototype, I need feedbacks on every aspects of the game 😉
  • Compatibility : I’m trying to develop a multi-platform game using HTML5 (including geolocation & compass API), Google Map V3 API & FireBase, but some phones might not work well if they are a little old.

Not much time for this LD but I’ll try to make something. Depending on the theme I’ll use :

Html5, Js & Firebase or Unity 5

+ Blender, Gimp, Inkscape, Ableton Live

+ Tea !

When I discovered the theme I first thought about a game with a people living on ice. But a monster was living beneath the surface and regullary killed some of them. You goal was to investigate and find the monster … but a least I decided that it was too complex for a week end and at the end of the first day I changed the game (below screenshot of this first idea).

So I kept the iceberg but  it became a frenetic survival game. I worked a lot on sound and lighting to get a great atmosphere even if the design was minimalist. I took a lot of time to get the feeling on/under the surface. About the code the AI of the monsters isn’t very evolved but combined to the stress of sinking iceberg I thought it was enough. I added a scoring, a system to randomly add some iceberg and it was already the end!icebergmonstre

– lost too much time on the first scenario, no music this time, controls not enough polished, wanted to try Open GL

+ sound & lighting quite good, quite productive (I worked about 15h on it)

Coming soon : I’m working on a small update!

Triceratops (short story)

At first it was a a team work, made during the Jam Shaker at Cité des Sciences (Paris). The final result on sunday was a 2D fighting game with dinosaurs but the part where the players should have mixed DNA to create their own dinosaur wasn’t achieved. So the game wasn’t really interesting…

So sunday evening I took the dinosaurs sprites, created a new unity scene,  and made a completely different game, very simple, but with a more polished universe : Triceratops.

Play Triceratops !

Here are a few games that I really liked (and were in the thematic!):

And by the way I would like to thank everyone who played my game, you are now more than fifty (it could have been worse for a first ludum dare ^^).

Cylinder – the post mortem

Cylinder gameplay extract
So the post mortem now (it seems to be the tradition!)

It was my first participation in the ludum dare … and by the way my first game with Unity.
I used at least all of this tools: blender 2.6, unity 4, gimp 2.8, inudge and audacity (everything was free to use ^^)

Goods points :
– I managed to make and finish a game : I got the idea, made the modelisation, programmming, music, …
– There isn’t any “critical” bug
– I learned Unity basis in a very short lapse of time
– and I managed to create something quite interesting

Bad points :
– Didn’t manage to finish it like I wanted: graphism could have been better, moving platforms were also intended; …
– Bad choices for the controls
– Gameplay a bit too slow

Next :
…you liked the concept? Follow my post, I started to work on a 2nd version wich will clear most part of these bad points!
