Hey guys and gals!

Forgot to post before the compo to say I’m in so might as well do it now! ๐Ÿ˜‰
It’s been some time since my last LD so let’s make this one count!

My tools are:

  • Game engine : Game Maker: Studio
  • 2D Graphics: Paint, Gimp
  • Sound: sfxr, audacity, Wolfram Tones
  • Energy: Coffee (lots of it!)

It’s been a few hours now since I started working.
So far I have done:

  • A slick intro screen
  • A functional menu screen

So basically, I have strictly no gameplay done… >.<

Well then, better get back to work!

Best of luck to all of you! ๐Ÿ˜‰

LD 30 – I am in too.

Hello everyone!

It’s great to see many new people about. I’m in for my 6th time. So far I managed to finish only 2 games. Weirdly enough, both those games were completed during the summer LD (which is when I have most time on my hands). So hopefully I will manage to make it this time too.

As usual, my tools will be:

  • IDE: Game Maker: Studio
  • 2D Graphics: Paint, GIMP
  • 3D Graphics: Blender
  • Sound: Audacity, sfxr

In this past year, I have learned a lot in 3d programming and networking. So you can expect some awesome stuff I was unable to do the previous Ludum Dares.

Anyway, good luck to all of you! :)

Army of BOTZ : Post Mortem

You can find Army of BOTZ here.

The week before the compo, as anyone should do, I have voted for the themes. This time during the voting I was VERY negative; I gave -1 to most of the theme.”10 seconds” though appeared to me as the most interesting of all. I didn’t really brainstorm much as to what I should do if any theme is chosen. Early in the week, I had a revelation: I have had an idea for a while now about a game in which you can control robots by programming them before the level. That idea was inspired by a Minecraft mod called Computercraft (which I used to use al LOT). My revelation was that I should finally give life to that idea and combining it with the “10 seconds” theme should it be chosen. As it turns out it was, and so I ended up making the game which became “Army of BOTZ”.

Ludum Dare 27 is the fourth LD compo I have attempted but only the second I managed to finish. At first, knowing making “Army of BOTZ” was probably going to be complex, I wasn’t certain to make it in time. But nonetheless, I somehow made it! Along the way, many things happened; some of which were good, others were bad, and some were ugly.

The good:

-> Making the idea come to life:ย  As I said, at first this idea seemed quite ambitious. Using Game Maker : Studio, I thought that handling certain elements (such as executing the programs) would be complex. However, I was supprised to see how fast I managed to progress on the first day, as by the end of the day, the whole programming interface was done and so was transfering the data to the computers.

->The theme : This time, the theme was more interesting. And as a result, before the compo had even started, I already had an idea.

->Time: Working suprisingly fast, by the end of the first day, most core mechanics were done.

The bad:

->The sound: I did record some sounds but for some obscure reason, they wouldn’t be played ingame. I tried to change the file formats but nothing worked… :(

-> The level design : Initially, I had planned to make at least 20 levels for my game. In the end, only 15 were made since I had wasted a lot of time.

-> The web version? : I am still not sure what the problem is/was, but for another obscure reason, the web version of the game wouldn’t load for some people. I my self tried a first time but it didn’t work either, and then a second time it worked…

The ugly:

-> The graphics: Lets face it, the graphics are ugly. They were only mad in about half an hour…

->Uhm… I don’t have any other ideas…

Next time:

I certainly hope there will be a next time. I will try to come up with an other innovative idea and manage to make it come to life. I will also try to spend a bit more time on level design, sound, and graphics. And if I get enough feedback, I might just try to keep on making this game and possibly one day sell it.

Anyway, I have had a lot of fun making Army of BOTZ and I hope you will have fun playing it.

You can find my entry here.

The last few hours were stressful because I still had a fe levels to design and most sprites to redo.ย In the end, I made it about an hour before the deadline. So I decided to work on a web version. Sadly, There’s an annoying bug with the title screen display so it may no be possible to make that version (I’ll still try a bit longer to find the problem).

Anyway, here are a few screenies!

I hope You will enjoy playing my game as much as I will be playing yours!

Army of BOTZ : update #6

Hello again!

Since last update, I have been working on conditions to end a level. So now whenever the timer reaches 0, a message will pop up either indicating your success or your failure. I then moved on to making new levels but I came up with a problem of data loss between 2 levels so I had to rewrite entire sections of the code to fix that. And now that it is fixed, I can finally go back to level design.

Once all the levels are done, I will work on new graphics and the help screen.

Thats all for now. Good luck to everyone!

Hello again!

Those last few hours, I have been working on objectives and the 10 second timer.

The objectives and the timer both are displayed correctly. Now, all I have to do is add conditions of success and failure.

You may also have noticed, I have changed the button graphics.

That is all for now. Good luck to everyone!

Hello!

I startd working today about an hour ago. Transfert of the program from the programming UI to the actual level now works! The droids can also execute the program and move around the level.

The graphics will have to change but I think I’ll do that when I’m done with all the core mechanics of the game.

Time to eat now!

Good luck to all!

Army of BOTZ : update #3, end of day 1

Hello again!

The first day is coming to an end. Usually, in game jams, my first day is highly unproductive… But surprisingly, this time I feel quiete satisfied of all the work I have done.

I have made today:

  • the main menu
  • the level select menu
  • the droid programming interface
  • transfert of the data to the droids
  • all the “common” functions now work on the droids

Tomorrow, I will:

  • make the rest of the functions
  • make new sprites
  • design levels
  • implement sound

Here are a few screenshots of what I made since last time:

Good luck to everyone!

Army of Botz : Update #2

Hello!

After spending most of the afternoon working on the droid programming interface, I can finally say I am satisfied!

img2

This interface allows you to program all droids individually. All droids have access to the “common” functions. But depending on their class, they will hace access to different “special” functions.

Now that this is finally done, I can work on getting the droids to execute the program. And once that is done, most of the game will have been finished.

That’s all for now!

Good luck to everybody!

Hello!

I have now been working for about 2 hours. In those 2 hours I did a bit of interface design.

I’m quite satisfied with the result so far but there is still much to do…

Anyway, time to eat now!!!

Good luck to everyone!

Time to get started!

After a good night of sleep a a few hours of thinking, now’s the time to stat making the game!

I guess I am going to do something very typical with the theme. Basically, I’ll make a puzzle game in which you control several robots that you “program” before each level. It won’t really be coding when I say “program” but rather put modules one after the other performing specific action (move forward, pick up item, …). Those robots will have to perform a specific task within 10 seconds.

I’ll start by programming the control of the robots and the “programmming” interface.

Good luck to everyone!

I’ll make it this time!

I’m inย  for the 4th time. My first LD was last august with LD24 which I managed to finish in time. I later attempted LD 25 and 26 but failed miserably to finish in time mostly because the themes didn’t interest me so much and I din’t have much time either.

But this time : I WILL MAKE IT!

Anyway, my tools will be:

EDI : Game Maker Studio

Sound : Audacity, SFXR

Graphics : paint, GIMP

Good luck to everyone, and Happy LD!

And so it begins!

I finally started working on the game!

Until now, I mostly tried to find ideas for a game. The definition I found the most interesting is :

minimalism : design or style in which the simplest and fewest elements are used to create the maximum effect.

Interpreting the defenition, I decided to make a game with a limited number of game mechanics but those mechanics are sufficient to create a “maximum effect”.

Good luck to everyone!

Not much has been done since last update..

I mostly took care of fixing bugs and making sprites.

Now, I have to :

  • Finish all graphics
  • make music and SFX
  • add a few more features
  • Script the story
  • submit the game!

Good luck to all Ludum Dares (?) and espescially those behind schedule like me. ๐Ÿ˜‰

End of day one…

It’s been alredy a day of work and there’s still so much to achieve…

So far I have made :

  • message boxes
  • player movement and collision checking
  • cutscene and event system
  • Player sprite

Now, I have to make :

  • music and SFX
  • more sprites and tiles
  • add NPCs
  • objects to interact with
  • level design

Hopefully I’ll make it in time for tomorrow…
