Depending on my mood this weekend, I might be in again for my 4th LD.

My selection of tools is the same as always:

Engine/Framework: LÖVE2D. Last time I said I wanted to change the engine, but I didn’t find the time to learn Unity :(

Graphics: Gimp, Inkscape

Audio: Audacity, sfxr, LMMS

Libs: Probably the stuff found in my old LD entries

Misc: Windows 8.1, Notepad++ (or maybe tmux+vim+NERDTree+stuff)

Food: Unhealthy

Sleep: Not enough

Soo. Snowman vs. Chesspieces is my third LD entry and I think the most complex thing I’ve written in 48 hours (or about 19 hours if you can trust github).

Snowman vs. Chesspieces is a mixture of games like Binding of Isaac and games like Fluxx. Every round you have to pick some cards, which will define how the round will look like: Enemies, obstacles, weapon modifiers, etc. Most important: Goals are also cards – which means that your goal also can change every round.

What went right

  • Fun: I  had so much fun developing this time. I rushed down lines and lines of code, and everything I wanted to do worked like I imagined it.
  • My Idea: I had this idea flying around in my head, and I’m happy that I was able to finish it somehow – at least as a concept. It’s playable and winnable.
  • Audio: I managed to create some music for my game this time, and I’m so happy about it. Some other article mentioned that games without any audio are boring – and yes – they are.
    Even the simplest sound effects from sfxr are sufficient. And for the music I guess you can keep it simple and use many loops.

What went wrong

  • Balancing/Play testing: Ugh. I hate that part of game design. And since this game is based on randomness, balancing stuff doesn’t get easier.
    Also I’m not the best gamer in the world, so I often don’t know whether I’m just an idiot playing my own game, or if it’s genuinely too hard 😉
    I didn’t have enough time to balance everything, but I think the result is kind of okay..
  • Graphics: The graphics are mostly just from some UTF-8 font and lack animations. Unfortunately I’m not a good graphics designer, and therefore my graphics are usually basic.
  • Finished Game?: As it is now, it’s more like a concept than a finished game.. Which is okay for the time I spent on it, I guess. But for the next LD I think I’m going for a finished, polished game (even if the idea/size of the game gets smaller)
  • (Edit) Oh my god, the title. For one second I thought it was funny, but now I think it’s just “I tried too hard to be funny”. “Snowman vs. Chess pieces” is definitely enough.

What to change next time

I think it’s time to say goodbye to LÖVE2D :( … And switch to something like Unity.
I spent much time on implementing stuff that should be in a standard library .. stuff like GUIs (the GUI-class in my game is the biggest one…), distance/vector methods, collision detection, etc.And Unity has this cool component system.
So I hope I have time  to get myself into Unity(2D) before the next LD.

Soo. I have a mashup of a cardgame (like fluxx) and binding of isaac in mind. Lets see how far I get :)

Here is a screenshot from my (currently unnamed) project: It’s the mighty snowman fighting against a sturdy tower. :) Also I have many “The King” cards at the moment.

I kinda want to participate, but I don’t know how motivated I’ll be tomorrow… (LD starts at 3am where I’m located, not staying awake till then.)

As usual my tools will include:

  • Engine: Löve2D
  • Graphics: Gimp, Incscape
  • Sounds: Audacity, this tool to create sound effects, maybe OpenMPT/LMMS if I get fancy
  • Libs: I guess the same as last time: https://github.com/xicalango/ld30-2/tree/master/lib

Phew. After 24 hours my first idea showed to be too complex. So after some hours full of desperation, idea finding and writing the best designed software ever (/s), I finally got something that resembles a game in some way.

After I spontaneously dropped out of the last LD, I’m definitively in for this one! :)

My current plan is to use the following tools:

  • Engine: LÖVE 2D
  • Graphics: GIMP, Inkscape, Krita
  • Sound/Music: sfxr, lmms, openmpt (, jeskola buzz?)

As well as the following libraries:

  • middleclass
  • SLAM
  • Maybe even more stuff from the libs folder of my last LD-entry:

So I’m in for a second time I guess.

Stuff I’m planning to use:

  • Engine: Löve 2d. Probably with rotLove (it’s going to be a roguelike!) and most certainly some other libs.

At circa 7 hours on the countdown left my internet blew up. Panic Panic Panic!

So.. Tethering on. Upload to the first host I know and works without images (google drive) and submit the entry with the full glory of instable HSPA. Hurray.

And now, 3.5 hours left, my internet decided to work again. So. Upload to dropbox, change every links. And now… I’m out. I guess I’ll have to few levels, to impress anyone. But it has been fun making them :)

Looking forward to looking at all the other games, and LD29 :)

Owing to a blog post by.. **Insert name here** (And I forgot to <3 it as well… Blame me) I found GifCam and so I present you some moving Rocks-n-Blaster pictures:

It has physics and all. :) (And yes. The name comes from “Rocks’n’Diamonds” and “Dyna Blaster“… Some of my favourite games when I was a child)

So.. After a long day of fun programming (I can’t remember the last time I programmed on something a full Saturday) I will go to bed. And my game hast some substance. And a concept. And currently 8 levels + 3 tutorial levels.

Unfortunately, I’m not the best level-designer. But hopefuly I will dream of some, during sleep 😉

So.. The main engine is working to the point I’m satisfied with.. Now it’s on to level creating, and adding features on the way. (And bug fixing, and engine improving)

Let’s see if I have enough time to get away from these rather minimalistic graphics. 😉 (And not to forget some sound and music)
