I wrote some bug report software for you guys!

Last LD I had a major game breaking bug that affected 1/2 of the people playing it. I’m not going to go into detail about it but it affected you if you had certain hardware limitations.

This year in order to avoid the same situation I had the idea of software that would read everything coming out of the console and if the game crashed or the user reported having trouble with it, it would report the console output as well as the user’s report of what happened, then I thought I would make it so that it would be configurable and other people could use it. It works with any programming language on any operating system. All you have to know is how to launch an application on that OS from the command line. Its not a very big program so it should not be a problem to include in your game download.

I don’t have any public download yet but once I have a quick tutorial video on how to use it I will create a new post linking the download and the video.

PS. I forgot to specify that all of the console output and the user report would be sent to a server that you would have to host.

This is the game so far. Added the platforming  jumpy thing. And collision(works pretty well but not perfect just yet)

So far we have been working for some few hours(if you count the hour or two of us giggling at funny pictures we made “work”). I’m going to write a collision detection system and probably call it for the night. Tomorrow however our artist will be joing us and our game will look super sexy! Anyways good look with you compo’s/jams. And don’t forget to have fun!

It’s just the graphics and resource loading stuff. Its intentionally this way so that I can make decisions on how the level and entity handling stuff works during the ludum dare. anyways,

It seems like the past 3 ludum dares I could not participate because something was keeping me from it. But finally I will be able to participate(unless the world comes to an end). I got the time off work and I have the money set aside to spend to much money on food.

I also have somebody who will be joining me in this LD, that to my surprise is really good at pixel art

Anyways I will be using these tools:

IDE: Eclipse

Library: LWJGL

Tile Editor: Tiled

Pixel Art: pdn

I’ve been working for a few hours now and i have the base engine implemented. All I have left to do is implement Server/Client stuffs and can start working on content.

Game Update 3 – Multiplayer Basecode Complete

So on my last update is announced I decided to write multiplayer into my October challenge project. Well all the basic “need to have code” is there. You can see other players and worlds sync up server/client. Now I just need to add in some prototyping stuff and than I will show off the game with the help of a friend playing from a separate computer. Hopefully I can do this by tomorrow.

 

Anyways, good luck with your project’s and can’t wait to see (and buy) them!

Game Update 2 – Multiplayer

I have chosen that the game I’m writing (which I will reveal more of coming soon) will feature a multiplayer option. I’m going to use a UDP server/client setup and its going to relay instructions in XML (if i can find a way to make this work without trouble), also note this will not be the first multiplayer game I’ve made.

So far i have prototyped a terrain generator. Its similar to the one in terraria but MUCH more basic. This could serve as foundation to the real thing but im still planning out what to do. in the mean time, check out this picture showing the two different worlds it generated…

On the topic of Java

After reading all the “I’m in!” post’s I feel I can safely say that Java will be the most used programming language in the entire Jam. I myself am going to be using Java for LD. But all that is besides the point. My question is, how many people here would agree that soon Java is going to replace C++ in a maybe no so distant future. Obviously not going to happen over the course of a year but it is a serious possibility. Not just because people are using it in the Ludum Dare but because it offers lots of control while remaining clean and simple. Maybe not everything about games will writing in Java as some parts of the LWJGL OpenGL port to Java is written in C++. Anyways these are my thoughts and as it is a discussion topic I would like to know what you guys think.

So last week I said I was only going to be in if I had the weekend free. Well the weekend looks good enough. I only have to work for four hours on Saturday but that is fine. I’m probably just going to do the jam but at least I am participating after all right? Anyways just reiterating over the tools I will be using

So this year I got my first job (note, I’m only sixteen years old). And as long as I don’t have work on the day I will go and do the Ludum Dare. And maybe this time I will fully finish my project
