3′ in the morning (Belgian time) marks the end of our LD jamming session, and leaves us with mixed emotions…

An unfinished game…

Yes, we couldn’t completely wrap it up… The gameplay and graphics were finalized on time, as well as the sound, but there wasn’t time enough to implement a very important part of the game : dialogs and transitions between levels.

“Player 2, start!” is thus playable, but… not really understandable.

One thing is certain, we’ll finish this game. Only not tonight… :(

… but filled with amazing achievements!

We may have taken too much time, but the team achieved a tremendous amount of good work!

The idea of using evolving graphics throughout the game was really ambitious, and that’s maybe what cost us the deadline, but it is also what allowed to have such amazing different graphic environments for each of the levels. And we will never insist enough on our two coders’ abilities : they just worked their asses off to keep up with the four designers who were always making them push their boundaries in terms of implementing stuff!

In the end…

The best thing about the Ludum Dare is learning things, feeling a sense of community, and enjoy yourself. That, we can be sure of, we achieved brilliantly! 😀

Howdy fellow jammers! It is now 1 in the morning here in Belgium, and believe it or not, we’re still alive with brains in almost perfect working order.

Just a short update to announce the level 3 is now being finalized. A quick screenshot to prove it :

Four levels out of 5 are now designed. Time for a wrap-up of the levels’ environments.

Level 1 : Very West

The first level is in 8-bit mode, and takes place in a western-like environment.

Level 2 : Jurassic Friends

This one is in 16-bit mode, and taking place in a… wait for it… Jurassic environment.

A level with cuuuute inhabitants, and less cute ones…


Not cute

Level 3 : Baker’s Borough

The 3rd level’s a low poly 3D, reference to our good old PSOne. The atmosphere could be described as a mysterious London…

A cat’s hiding behind a window… LYRA???

Level 4 : Call of Battlefield IV, Medal of Warfare

We had fun finding the title of that one. 😀

The evolving graphics continue : this one’s a 3D AAA level. The context? Well… war.

We don’t have screenshots for this level just yet… sorry!

Level 5 : Indievisible loot

The Indievisible Loot will be fuuuull of easter eggs (as you could see in a previous post), lots of references to famous Indie games! Why is that? The adventure of Player 2 will give you all the answers when you’ll be playing. We will say no more.

The level’s the reign of pirates, yarrr!

We’re back for the 3rd and last day of our jamming frenzy! Stress is slowly building up, as well as the anticipation to finally present our – hopefully – finished game.

Let’s do a brief assessment of our progress so far…

  • Working on the level design as I write. The 1st & 3rd levels are done, still 3 to go!
  • The graphics are almost done, just missing some details.
  • Basic sound effects are implemented.
  • The main dialogs are written (thanks to Boo!).
  • The title screen is ready to be implemented.
  • aaaand Lyra just added her final touch to the code by jumping on the developers’ keyboard. Thanks as always Lyra…

Our developers, as the whole team, stressed, rushed, but happy! :D

Second jamming day report

Night has fallen on our Belgian landscapes, and it’s now time to see where we stand.

As you can see, the collectible items (the stars) are now implemented. And the bottles you see on the pictures are here to hurt our hero. Things are really beginning to shape up!

Since 8’o clock, everyone’s back to their desk and ready to rock this jam for another day.

Here’s the current result of our hard work.

In the developers’ corner:

The first stage, looking good!

Lots of progress here! They finalized :

  • The camera movements;
  • The character’s moves;
  • The platforms’ collision system;

Right now, they’re working on level design, and they’re beginning to make the enemies appear.

In the designers’ corner:

A thousand words would be less eloquent than a bunch of pics. So let’s just stick to the pics and be amazed (yes, we are proud of our designers’ work!).

Our jam started this morning by a long brainstorming. From using evolution through a Darwin-themed game to controlling an evolving main character, loads of different ideas came up.

But what we settled on was the following concept :

– A platform game;

– and a game of which each stage will correspond to a graphical evolution, from 8-bit to 3D;


The pitch

Player 1 and Player 2 are brothers. Player 1 always was the braver one, he always willingly set for new adventures, as opposed to Player 2, more shy and reserved. Player 1 and 2 just finished their game, and Player 1 only wish for one thing : explore a new world! Player 2 isn’t sure that’s a good idea, and try to change Player 1’s mind. But too late : Player 1 leaves on his own.

Player 2 begins to seriously worry as his brother doesn’t seem to come back. Maybe it’s time for him to be the hero and go help Player 1…

And that’s how Player 2 will embark on a journey which will show him how much video games have changed throughout the years, not always for the best. Maybe Player 2 will be able to find a better place for him and his brother to live as video game characters.

Right now, they’re on to the 2.5 D platforming. Physics kind of works, and they’re implementing visuals.
