Come on and Compo!

After doing much better than I thought I could last time (#16 Humor, #45 Innovation, #61 FUN?!), I think I’ll have a shot at this LD too. My tools of choice are:

-IDE: Game Maker: Studio
-Graphics: Inkscape + Spriter (Spriter is a fantastic little program that’s new for me, but I think it’ll really help my game graphics-wise)
-Music: I’ll likely use a random music site, but if I’m inspired for whatever reason I’ll use LMMS
-SFX: sfxr
-Playlist to listen to: Slam, bam, thank you ma’am

Good luck to everyone!

Far, far, far exceeded my expectations.

Post-gamejam Analysis/Assessment

Why do people call these things postmortems? I don’t know about you guys, but my game is (hopefully) anything but dead.

So my game was actually made for this scholarship-giving thing I might win, and I figured I might as well do Ludum Dare and double-dip. It had to be about a social issue, and connected worlds = networking, which = internet safety, so my game was pretty much cut out for me.

Anyways, enough Trojan horsing around (rimshot), let’s get this biopsy on the road!

What went right:
*I think I made my graphics look reasonably nice, at least good enough.
*Pretty cool gameplay! It’s got a bit of an addicting feel, and the fact that levels are randomized means that you might have better luck next time.
*I learned how to make a rage game! (purely accidentally, but hey)
*I have a decent chance of winning the competition! (wooo)
*The music is good. Like, so good, I whistle it in the shower. Random music generators are great.

What went wr-

No, really.

Many people made it only to level 3 out of 5 + boss level. Some didn’t even beat level 2. It goes to show how difficult internet safety i I actually can’t justify it, no game to help the general public understand internet safety should be this hard. So I made amends!

The newest version of Networkaholics (which I’ll submit into the scholarship thingy as opposed to this) comes with an easier mode. Still difficult, but not so much. That way you can beat it for yourself (or if you want to, go all hardcore to impress me. Really, if you beat this game as-is I’ll have to give you some sort of reward).

So, so long and thanks for all the Ludum Dare.

Play my gaaaaaaame over here, and enjoy.

Also, don’t click on suspicious links.

It’s all Ogre now

I can’t even think right now.

Runner 2014-08-24 18-53-01-76

I’m done. I’ve read each e-mail line five hundred times over, but it’s done.

It’s an interesting yet quite challenging game where you have to examine every e-mail, download, and URL scrupulously in order to weed out bad ones. You can’t let a malware-infested program reach one of your computers.

Anyways, I should probably link: Click here for game

I can’t think straight. Have I said that yet?

Wrapping Things Up

Guys stop making your LD projects look so gooooood, it’s hard to compete.

Anyways, might as well make a dev blog post now:

Runner 2014-08-24 09-17-54-46

It’s all looking and playing quite nice now, and it’s time to finish it up in the next couple of hours with a main menu, victory screen, music… on second thought, this may take longer than expected.

And looking at the screenshot, I just remembered that some things cover the text. Gotta fix that too…

It’s all coming together as computers fall apart…

I’ve got a bit nicer graphics (still gotta finish), the main gameplay is all done (it’s quite hard, but I don’t know if it’s actually hard or if I’m just burned out from playing it too much) and now, it’s time to polish. I mean take a huge break, then polish.

Runner 2014-08-23 16-13-12-57

For those of you who didn’t see my original post, my game is called Networkaholics. You’ll have to scour through emails and downloads, deleting the suspicious ones. If you accidentally delete an innocent file or malware reaches one of the connected computers, you’re in as much trouble as the computer’s in…

Coming along nicely!

I set the bar low with this one, and I’m glad I did, because my basic gameplay is already technically done! Behold, the bad graphics edition of Networkaholics!

Runner 2014-08-23 13-40-07-79

Okay, it’s not a lot to look at, but the gameplay is still nice.

The gist of it is, you need to review all the mail and downloads people are sending to each other. If any of it sounds fraudulent/malicious, you need to delete it. If you delete an innocent message or download, or people end up receiving malware, you’re in hot water. In the screenshot, the message being reviewed claims that your version of totally-not-flash is out of date. Sound suspicious…?

I’m In (For realsies this time!)

Ok, so I did lie about entering decide not to enter the last two times, but I really will this time! I swear!

I’ll be using Game Maker Studio, ASEprite/Inkscape for graphics, bfxr for my sound effects, LMMS for music (maybe i’ll use a random midi thing, i don’t know) and I’ll probably listen to Buckle Your Pants for 48 hours straight. Yay!

Just realized my idea for a theme survived the Theme Slaughter and made it into fifth place on Round 4.

Welp, I’m in again

I’m learning Unity but not skilled enough yet, so I’ll still be using good old Game Maker.

-IDE: Game Maker
-Graphics: ASEprite or Inkscape
-Music: LMMS
-SFX: sfxr
-Ideas: hopefully a good one

May everyone have an awesome LD!

My first LD has come and gone, how’d I do?

Coolness 51%

#660 Innovation 2.65
#728 Fun 2.52

#881 Mood 2.10
#903 Graphics 2.04

Not too good, but not too shabby. At any rate, I hope to make a great little game for this Mini-LD!

Quick Question

Are we allowed to edit an already submitted game however we see fit until the deadline is over?

Only Takes One – It’s finally done!

Not a regular day at the park

My first compo game, Only Takes One, is now out! While I was slightly disappointed at times with the quality, I managed to change the graphics I had in mind and also add random events, which made me quite satisfied with my finished product.

So if you like robots, very, very limited ammo, and upgrades galore, play Only Takes One now!

Inverted in the Membrane

So, after making this game for quite a while, I’ve frankly grown sick of playing it. But now that I’m here, might as well finish!

The boss level shall have an inverted background. Enjoy constantly buying new ammo to fill up your one-at-a-time weapon.

Let's shoot some squares!

I’m just about done with the gameplay itself, the goal of the game is to take your square from having just one bullet and an empty pocket to being rich, while avoiding the enemies’ greedy clutches and carrying only one bullet at a time. Upgrading yourself is the key to getting there, along with getting streaks.

Count me in!

Howdy all, I’m gmfk07. There’s a slight chance you may know me from The Gameboy Portal, this game I made along with pikmin4000 for a gameboy jam with over 1.5k downloads. This isn’t exactly my first game jam, but it’s my first Ludum Dare and the first one I’ll go solo on, so yeah. Tools of choice:

  • Game Maker Studio
  • LMMS
  • ASEPRITE or Inkscape
  • Procrastination

At any rate, I’m ready for this space jam game jam!
