Hey folks! We made it! Here’s our game for the jam: The ZIGGURARK!

As an Explorer controlling half-cut, genetically recombined animals you have to wander through the dungeon of Tezcacoatlus, the Assembler God.

He’s a badass guy who has The Tool, an ancient relic capable of cutting animals in half creating hybrids. You take control of one hybrid and your goal is to get to the end of the eight levels in order to save your own life.

Hybrids has the good and bad sides of the animals they are made of: the body of a gorilla is extremely powerful, but its legs are slow.

…but what if you have the body of a gorilla running with the legs of a rabbit? You go FAST.

Move around with the arrow keys and fight with WASD, a-là Binding of Isaac. There are wooden crates throughout the levels: if you find one and you break it, you can recombine half of your hybrid with a new animal.

Because, you know, if you’re struggling with a turtle-rabbit hybrid maybe you need a stronger half… :-)

We are a team of two and we coded the game in HaxeFlixel, with art made in Pyxel Edit. It was our first game together (and absolute first with Haxe) and, even if it’s not as nearly as polished as we wanted, we had tons of fun making it. We made it in about 36 hours of work.

Play it in your browser (OSX/Windows builds in the entry page!)

We hope you like it!

I really look forward to playing your games…

The Ziggurark: half-cut animals – First day

Hey folks! This time I’m running for the Jam with Syrhmak, a good friend of mine who joined me as a badass artist.

We’re working on ZIGGURARK, a dungeon crawler with half-cut, genetically recombined animals living in a pre-Columbian Ark ruled by the mighty Tezcacoatlus.

How cool does that sound?!

You, the Explorer, after discovering the ZIGGURARK in the heart of the jungle, stumble upon an ancient tool used for recombining DNA and creating twisted biological hybrids.

Using the weapon, you’ll have to take your hybrid through the perils hiding in the dark rooms of the ZIGGURARK…

Code: HaxeFlixel

Art: Pyxel Edit

We’re almost halfway through! We already have 30 hilarious animal combinations (and we’re planning to add more), the intro splash screen and some basic levels. Basic game mechanics are in place as well!

Lots of fun so far… Good luck everyone! Keep up the good work!

MiniLD #47 – Boxteroids, progress video

For this weekend Mini-LD I’m working on a remake of my first game ever made… an Asteroids clone!

“Boxteroids” will be a simple Asteroids clone, but with Box2D-driven physics… hope to finish it, because I’ve got not so much time this weekend 😛

EDIT: updated!

More will follow: a post-mortem.

Well, this was my second attempt to 48h compo and the first time I finished and submitted my game.

What to say? I think I learned some things.

To be honest, I learned a lot from my first attempt on LD #25.

What I thought after giving up on the last compo revealed as being true this time: first goal must be “being pragmatic”. And by “being pragmatic” I mean aiming at a target that’s reachable in 48 hours according to your skills.

This is a good lesson, that can be extended outside the specific LD target, into the “real world”.

I’m not a game developer, I’m a CS student. I think I’ve got skills, but I need to work a lot on myself and to improve myself and this competition is a great way to do it.

My game won’t surely win anything and won’t surely appear in the top rated games, but I don’t care at all, because designing my own game, crafting my own game, coding my own game and seeing it coming to life was just a real pleasure.

And I’d like to thank you guys for making fun games, making me feel part of a cool community for 48 hours of hard work.

Submitting my game, playing your games, reading and writing comments, seeing how many incredibly smart ideas you people have got about my same theme and put into your games… I loved this competition. Thank you guys!

And, by the way, this is my game, Euler’s Inc.:

See you on next LD! 😀

Euler, Inc.: I made it!

Ooooh yeah, it’s the first time I complete a 48h compo and honestly I’m pretty satisfied!

I like my game, it’s funny and it’s difficult. I like it.

Quoting the same description I wrote in the entry page, “Euler, Inc.” is a building/arcade game about polygons and an ambiguous chemical company hired by Government!

There’s not much to say about gameplay: you have to move around polygons and making them match a specific “keyhole”.

I’m so proud of myself. I mean, even if my game should suck, I’m however proud of having finished a competition. It was a challenge and I finished a game. I’m proud of myself :)

Take a look at Euler, Inc. and let me know if you like it or not or how could I improve it.

Well, I’m sure you guys made some great games (way better than mine btw) as I saw during the compo here on LudumDare… I can wait to play your games!

Good night!

I’ve just recorded a short video showing the current game:

Well, I admit it took me a couple of hours to decide what kind of game to make.

I opted for a building/arcade game about polygons (everybody seems going for squares this time :P).

I started with an arcade survival game a-là geometry wars, but then I switched to this new concept.

This is a super-early shot of what I’m doing:

So, here we are. Minimalism. Uhm.

Well, it’s 7am here and I just woke up, I’m not sure if this is a really good theme or a really bad one. Now I’ll start brainstorming.

But first, some breakfast is needed m/

I’m in for the second time (with a brand new 2.5D engine)

Hello darers!

This will be my 2nd attempt at the compo and this is what I will be using:

Programming language: Java

IDE: Eclipse Juno

Sound effects: cfxr

Graphics: GIMP and Pixen

Also, as I wrote here, I’ve been working on a 2.5D raycasting engine that I will probably use in my game: you can watch it running in this YouTube video or download it:

As stated in the README file, it’s still a stub though I think it’s a good starting point. Feel free to browse the sources and/or use them in your projects if you wish 😉

Have fun and good luck!

Can I use my own game engine during compo?

Hello darers!

I’ll take part in the incoming 48h compo and that will be my 2nd attempt to LD :)

After the last LD I’ve been working on a 2.5D engine and I was wondering: can use it for my game during the competition?

This LD is almost over… not finished :(

Hi! I think I had a cool idea for this LD but I got stuck during development and wasn’t able to work for too many hours today. So, I won’t submit my work (but maybe I’ll finish it anyway). This was my first attempt at the LD compo and even if I didn’t finished it, it was really awesome and I learned a lot of new things (and that I have to be better at time boxing!). I’ll try to play as many of your games for this LD as possible, I already noticed that some of your ideas were very very very interesting.

See you on next LD!

My first attempt at LD (compo)!

Hi daring folks!

This will be the first time I take part in the competition, though I know there are many great programmers competing here. Honestly I just want to have fun 😉

Language: Java

IDE: Eclipse (Juno)

OS: OS X (testing also on Windows 7/8 and Linux)

SFX: sfxr

Music (maybe): guitar, synth

I’ll try to live stream myself during development; if I’m not able to do that, I’ll surely upload a timelapse video.
