I’m in! Trying Scala

I’ll be joining a Scala startup in a few weeks, and to get some practice with the language, I’ll use it for this edition of the Ludum Dare! Scala can access any Java library, so there are probably tons of Java game engines I could be using, but since the goal is to learn what makes Scala unique, I’ll be using Scage, a small Scala-only game engine tailored for simple 2D games.

For the graphics, I’ll probably be using Gimp as usual, or maybe just some basic geometric shapes if my inexperience with the language eats too much of my time. For audio, I plan to keep it simple: no music, and some simple sound effects generated using BFXR. That will be a downgrade in production values compared to Lumber Jacques, the game we made as a team last time for Ludum Dare 32 Jam, but the fact that there will be sound at all will be an upgrade compared to I’ve Seen This Room Before, the game I made solo for Ludum Dare 31 Compo.

This year, I have asked my colleagues for help and we’ll be participating as a team! Innobec makes custom software, so I expected that we’d have an over-abundance of programmers, but it turns out some of us have hidden talents: we have a 3D artist, a chiptune composer, a shader specialist, and yes, a bunch of programmers with different backgrounds. I hope this will allow us to create something more complete than what I’ve had the time to make on my own last time, the way-too-short “I’ve Seen This Room Before“. We’ll be using Unity, Blender and Ableton.

Oh, and we’ll be streaming the whole thing! Come see what our office looks like :)

I didn’t think I’d make it!

It took me way longer than expected to complete the intro puzzle, but it turns out that the gameplay mechanic, as usual in my games, is so hard to figure out that this intro puzzle is already hard enough of a challenge :)

My game is called “I’ve Seen This Room Before“. It looks like this:

This is my first Ludum Dare, and I’m amazed that I managed to make something in such a short amount of time! I’ll continue polishing it until the deadline.
