So.. that’s it! Third LD: “Being a Video Game Monster”

Posted by

Soooo that’s it!

First 3D game character I ever animated

 >My entry (clickable)< is about being the bot who plays the delibarately weak monster (like minions or other sorts of snack enemies), and the player this time is the bot 😉

Lots of the times the player gets the cool attacks because the game designers want to indulge him, but this time, your opponent will have a wierd bomb gun and a friggin kamehameha! But worry not as you’ll be able to find a way to win anyway. How? Not gonna say… lots of the game is figuring out what is what  – as said: lots of mechanics, not enough levels (+ I think I rushed when doing them)

Still, as every monster should – you need to kill the player. (no that’s not an oxy-moron, and no this wasn’t pun-y).

This LD I was honestly procrastinating a lot, in addition to the theme which I didn’t quite like and the fact that blender game engine sucks (but well, now at least YOU know – don’t enter the compo with a tool you’ve tried merely three days before it).

So… after who knows how many BSODs and crashes from that awful game engine, and after lots of effort in which I learned a lot (like making my first animated 3D character! making 3D weapons & more!) I think I’ve got a relatively stable result considering the mechanics (did you know kamehameha is actually plasma (forth state of matter)? -though I faked something out instead haha), a short and easy puzzle platfomer mini-game (I’d like to see it as prototype since it’s got merely 6 levels, so it’s a preview of sorts but includes lots of mechanics that could’ve been featured in new levels).

Good Luck =]

And as always – happy Ludum Dare (#33)!

I finally figured out my beam recoil mechanics in this fuc*ing annoying blender game engine!

I have 6 hours to make levels and publish it all, wish me luck!

Thank god!

Finally level making!

I’m not in a great pace but I did learn a lot this LD using Blender Game Engine, a tool I have merely 2-3 days experience with it (that I made as preperation to this LD).

For example – I made my first 3D character animation (which is horrible but what the heck 😛 )!

God I slept too much!

Hope I’ll make it! T__T

Making music out of 8-bit sound effects!

>This is what you get< when you bullsh*t around with sound effects from >here<.

I took all sorts of sound effects like explosion, jump, power up and tweaked ’em around to get this track.

So – yeah, now we know we can make at least a simple track like this using only sound effects lol

#FMFL – BSOD report

How did it go so far? Not that well, I opened this LD with a nice little BSOD probably from a memory leak combination from Chrome (which does make BSOD for me once in a while) or from Blender (since it’s a beta version). **Luckily, not much is lost** but generally things are going crappy with this theme.

Hope to finish something, goddamit it’s my third time and it’s never been this hard!

BTW: FMFL is a more raging FML. You may interperet it as:

Fu*k my fuc*ing life

Or as recursive: Fu*k my (fu*k my (fu*k my (…) …life) …life) life

Wow this theme is tough

I’ve got a few ideas but choosing one would limit totally the others while putting an enormous amount of effort. This is honestly one of the themes I voted for slaughter. O:

Just to remind you! (countdown wallpapers!)

Just to remind you! In order for the countdown wallpaper to be as accurate as it can be sure to set it one hour BEFORE the compo begins!

This means: 00:00 GMT you SET it!

If you’re not using my windows themepack version, be sure to set the wallpaper to slide each hour.

LD33 Wallpaper Countdown theme

This is my wallpaper for this LD. Based on this entry: (made for the 48h compo)

It’s 50 wallpapers actually. You set them as your theme one hour before the compo and set it to change each hour to the next. (I also uploaded a ready-to-use windows version) It shows you how much time is left and also some general tips for beginners. (Well, it’s my tips so you might not agree with them but… look at it just as suggested ideas).

I worked on this one for a bunch of hours cause I watned to make some cool typing effects so I made everything manually using MS Paint; In the end I had only a minor text effect which you won’t notice anyway (text turns to white) cause I was too lazy changing all the colors once again.

So… here’s the wallpapers seperately (so linux users can set ’em too or if you don’t trust .themepack files):

And here’s the themepack I made using windows 7:

I think I’m in

I think I’m in for my third Ludum Dare.

This time I didn’t plan much so I might do just about anything I guess, going pretty casual. I guess one cool aspect of LD is that you can try stuff you haven’t tried before while game developing;

I decided to leave the C++ DirectX 9 2D platformers and go blind with the only direction I have right now in mind is using Blender Game Engine. I learned a bit today, and I’m gonna learn some more until the comp begins which gives me about a week to prepare myself. I NEVER used it before so this is gonna be lots of fun and surely different than before. In case things go horribly wrong I might quit to Java and LWJGL which still isn’t my most comfortable zone, but still I wanna do something new. I might even try to make some web-based game using JS if things go REALLY BAD.

In the most saddening case in which I cannot finish anything –  here’s my last resort – the safe old most basic and simple 2D system for C++ and DX9: >Github Link<

and.. that’s about it. Hope you’ll also DARE (see what I did DARE?) yourselves to do LD in a tool you’ve never used before during the compo or even at all!

As for graphics – as always I’m gonna use GIMP, Photoshop maybe and pixlr .

As for sound – as always gonna make original sounds. Use Yamaha keyboard or maybe I’ll try using my Electric guitar. I might also try my luck with software-based synths and 8 bit music. We’ll see 😉

I’m 99% percent sure I’m in. unless something’ll pop up – I think I’m gonna go for it.

Good Luck, and as always – Happy Ludum Dare!

Finally done!

Wow this LD was pretty wierd for me;

I didn’t know what to do with the theme; I’m still not sure what I’ve done with the theme.

But it’s… unique XD

So apperantly, the game is about 3 or 4 minutes long;

I’ts kind of mindfu*k-comedy, I hope tou still like it , It was pretty fun and funny making it so yeah…

As per usual everything’s original:

**Soundtrack is my new keyboard and me ^^ – recorded it at home ^^.

I actually think the soundtrack went well even though the game’s kinda wierd .. so if you don’t understand the game

I’d be glad to hear your opnion at least about the soundtrack.

Recording- I dumbly recorded each layer seperately without listening to the other and somehow I actually got the tempo right so I’m kinda proud XD

This was kinda funny and fun at the same time.

This time the soundtrack is actually 3 tracks which essentialy are the same track edited differently – the first track is just the second track slowed down with some Wah wah effect; The second is the original; And the third is the second one reversed for the ending ^^.

**Art: This time it went pretty badly; I had no mood for making good art knowing I wanted to do some kind of a long plotty game ; though too much of planning just took all my time , and essentialy I just haven’t had the mood for some reason.

**Gameplay: I don’t know if you can call it gameplay it’s just random tasks, random plot .. just .. stuff XD

But if you want something light and hopefully funny, you might actually laugh a bit 😛

**Code: of course C++ & directX; and I think this is the last time I’m gonna use this on LD;

Cause – it just doesn’t suit this kind of competetion.

**Plot: yeah so of course the “plot” is essentialy a scientist living in a world which is composed of 2 worlds he tries to find out how to get to the neighbour world and the rest is a history … [3 minutes history but oh well]

So yeah it was fun and I hope I would do another LD;

And now of course the best part – seeing all those great games about a theme decided 48 hrs ago.

Who would’ve believed huh ? 😉

Happy Ludum Dare #30

finally my game is becoming playable! XD

I hope I can make it in time!

I endured for a long time but…

My “game” is just a nonsense. I’ve no idea where I’m going, and I have no idea what I’ve done up until now…

Let’s just hope this nonsense can bring something.

It’s kinda wierd but…

it seems that my game is going comedy O_o

Day one

OK last time I wasn’ THAT bad;

Today I mainly delt with how the game’s gonna be cause I had trouble with the ideas

I actually got many ideas but I had a hard time getting my head around making a simple game with this theme

rather than portal or something.

I actually ended up doing something pretty similar to what I did last time but – fear not my friends

because bunch of surprises are gonna be in this game [the introduction sure have one; but I won’t let u see 😛 ]
