Took a break last time, as LD22 didn’t go so well for me. Been doing a lot of Flash development lately, so I am in SHAPE.

“Subconsciously Alone” Post Mortem

Got some sleep so that now my mind is clear. This is my post mortem:

What went right

First LD48. This was my first time, and I enjoyed myself. I’ll definitely be in LD23, and maybe the next MiniLD. It’s a great concept as you get pushed to create a game within every short time, so you’ll be forced to come up with a product – and hopefully in most cases it’ll be good.

Coming up with the concept. At first I wasn’t that excited about the whole “Alone” theme, but then I came up with an idea and worked from that point on. The whole ‘everything is going on inside the protagonists’ head’ concept came out pretty well, especially with the description of how the protagonist can create things, because he is inside his own dreams.

Gameplay. The whole mechanism works quite well, and there’s not really many bugs with it, except for maybe the items collision with the level, sometimes it reacts a little weird if approached from some angles. I liked the pushing gifts around feature a lot, and the enemies (Guardians) also came out pretty well – even though they’re pretty simple, their swarming works quite well.

Graphics. I may not be a professional artist, but I think the graphics and the art style came out pretty well. I tried to make it seem sort of… inside his the protagonist’s head with the different purple background.

What went wrong

Difficulty. The game came out quite difficult, and I didn’t really have time to balance it. Programming the enemies and the survival system was pretty much in the last 6 hours of development, and I needed everything to work, so I was focusing more on getting things done, than getting things balanced.

Audio. I had made a song for the game, but it didn’t come out so good, so I decided on not having it in the final game. I didn’t make any sound effects either, so I couldn’t get the exact mood I wanted in the game, but I hope the intro movie and introduction part of the level makes up for that…

Design mistakes. One of the gameplay features is that you can draw a box, press space and that box becomes a part of the ground for some time. You can also drop gifts with space, when you are NOT drawing a box. To damage the Guardians, you need to drop a gift, open it by drawing a box over it, and then kicking the gift into the Guardian to kill it – this process is quite hard to manage, as it all revolves around the space-key and the mouse, which is very difficult to manage, unless you’ve got a really good mouse.

 

All in all. I forgive myself for my mistakes as this is my first LD48, but I guess next time speed coding I’ll be planning things a little bit more, before just going on coding and designing. I’ve had a fun time, and I hope everyone else had a good time, and isn’t too stressed out…as I feel. 😛

Yeahh… so I’ve made the introduction and most of the game engine…
OH AND ALSO THE OPENING MOVIE.
All I need now is the ACTUAL fighting stuff.

Not writing a lot this time, just gonna work now.

It’s midnight, and I lost count of how many times I’ve read developers on here saying that sleep is important, so I’m gonna go to bed now. 😉

Picture above is me selecting some of the items in my game… It’s a platformer with a mentally disturbed guy who’s wife and children has died, so in his loneliness he develops a disease which traps him inside his own mind, and while being there, he has to survive different threats.

As a weapon in this game, I’ve got lots of random items, that you get in presents that you create yourself. Using the cursor you can select a box, and when you put that over a present it bursts open, and the things lay there ready to be lifted around using the dragging feature.

I haven’t done any threats/enemies yet, but I’m planning on having you pushing the items into enemies and threats for them to die. It probably sounds weird now, but I’ve made it so when you walk into the different items they fly to the direction you pushed it with great power, so I hope for it to look great as soon as the enemies are incorporated.

As for the actual GOAL of the gameplay, I am not really sure yet, I really hope to come up with that tomorrow. It’ll be some kind of survival, I suppose…

So basically I just got up 2 hours ago, and I went onto Ludum Dare’s website and checked out the theme. I thought, “Alone? ..eh”, then I considered not doing it, but suddenly ideas began flowing through my head, and I settled with a pretty good one.

So my plan so far is:
1. Today, I’ll make a game engine.
2. Tomorrow, I turn it into an actual game.

But you never know, might end up finishing the engine today and begin on turning it into a game.

Right now I’ve got a background, a player and a cursor that selects things and that’s…basically it. What it’s gonna be used for you’ll find out later.

By the way, the thought of having to be one in two days actually motivates you to work really fast! (This is my first LD48 actually participating…)

First time trying for Ludum Dare!! I’ve often considered it, but first now I’m gonna do it! I’ve considered buying Adobe Flash CS5.5 around this time, cause I can finally get the student discount…which is like 80% off. So I’m either gonna use mxmlc to compile .as to .swf, or use Flash itself.

Platform: Flash!

Code: ActionScript 3.0

Graphics: Either art in Flash, or dynamically by lines/circles/pixels/etc by ActionScript.

Sound: Possibly Bfxr… or record the sounds myself like I did in my iPhone app GoGo Sheep (it actually went well!)
