First day over and not very happy with the result

After a few hours of working, I have a playable version of my game. The goal is to destroy all ‘robots’ by directing them to some kind of destroyer. It has sound effects and I’ve worked on some basic music (generated with abundant-music).

I thought that this would fit well with the theme of Minimalism: “Minimalism is any design in which the simplest and fewest elements are used to create the maximum effect.” (since you need to complete the levels in as few moves as possible).

In overall I think this game is not original and pretty boring. Maybe I can add some new gameplay elements which would make it more interesting.

While I don’t like the game, I’ve learned a few new things creating it.

  • It’s the first time I’m working with:
    • Libgdx (game development framework)
    • Tiled (levels)
    • Linux MultiMedia Studio (music)
  • It’s my first attempt to create an Entity framework although it’s probably not that good. I think I need to read more about game programming architectures.
  • It’s the first game I created which has levels and possibly also a ‘game over’ or ‘game completed’ state :)

After the disappointment of LD24:Evolution I’m going to try to create an Android game in 48 hours. I’ll be using libgdx (despite having no real experience with it) and some other tools (music generator, Paint.NET, Gimp, bfxr, etc).

This is my progress so far. The game is about Squido and his search for friendship. Squido is a pretty decent guy and all so he makes friends with other individuals really fast, but maintaining all the relations with his friends is a bit harder. It’s your job to ensure Squido is never alone!

Today I cleaned up my desktop, added a second monitor and installed Synergy on a laptop (which works really smooth!).

I also decided I will be using autotracker-bottomup to create the in-game music. It’s a pretty cool Phython scripts which generates songs (including song title ^^ ) in a few seconds. For sound effects I’ll be using Bfxr!

Images/Sprites/… will be made with Paint.Net since it’s free and works well enough for some basic stuff.

I’m still not sure about how I’m going to program the game itself. I have messed around in Java+Slick2D and C#+XNA so it’s hard to choose one since I’m comfortable working with both of them.  I guess it depends how I’m feeling this weekend.

I’ll also be using chronolapse to take screenshots every 30 seconds so I can create a timelapse video afterwards.

Edit: I also might be using Box2D (or a port for Java/C#)
Edit2: Also I might use 3DS Max but I don’t think I’ll have enough time do some 3D modelling
