SpaceJam – Day After

Posted by

Now the Day after, I still have yet to fully recover from the lack of sleep with work commitments. The upside is that I have the opportunity to  show a few colleagues the game and gather some friendly feedback. It was quite refreshing to have a break from coding and discuss some of the experiences while working on the project and having a moment to laugh at the things that went wrong and seeing how the things that went right have been able to come across in their feed back.

So today I’m looking at promoting the game and putting out some feelers to gather as much feedback as possible. Afterwards I plan to go back to the team for post huddle and share that feed back with the other members. I’m hopeful of producing a comprehensive post mortem on the project so stay tuned for that.

So We Finished!

Its been a long ride, but I’m glad we finished. Out final project differs greatly from our original conception and I can point to many reasons why that was the case throughout its life cycle. None the less the experience of working with 4 talented and passionate people to produce something in such a small time frame has been an enjoyable and worthy experience one of which I could reflect upon for weeks.

A post mortem of the project will be the hot topic for us with lessons learned and things to do next time, but that can wait until after we play some of the other games!

Working Hard, hopefully have something finished in time!

Have been working hard, we have some awesome music and graphics but probably were a little ambitious with the code and features so its going to be another late night. Heres a screen shot for now. An epic space survival game

OMG can’t believe I’ve made it this far, I lost a good 8 hours setting everything up due to incompatible libs and outdated tools not to mention RUBE doesn’t even allow saving JSON files in trail version ugh. Thus I probably wont finish in time but I’m pleased with how its coming along and I see a load of other good subs out there!.

I present a top down survival horror game in Flash, it uses dynamic rays to draw textures so you can only see a small distance in front of you based on player position and mouse angle. You have to navigate around the level in the dark. It feels quite scary already even though its pretty empty at the moment.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4824813/ugame.swf (gotta fix it for chrome)

There is so much more to do! Main areas I’ll be focusing on

– Add traps, doors, leavers which changes the level

– End goal is to fill up a bucket of your blood, you then have to carry it back to the start, it slows you down and you’ll also die more easily.

– Sounds, Intro

– Camera Flash to light up whole level for a split second, either charges or I might replace flash light if it feels more scary and have it go on a cool down so you have to move.

– Timer, collar bomb to make the player rush and make a mistake.

Hi, I’m FlashDave this is my first Ludum Dare, I wanted to wanted to say hi. A little intro, I’m 29 and a full time Flash AS3 programmer from the UK. I have used unity and javascript.

My plan of attack for this weekend is

1) getting ready (before announcement)
– Organize Bookmarks for relevant sites and tools
– review short list : I jot down some wild ideas so when the announcement comes I have something to fall back on.
– Moodboard : I collect some images that I think will be useful to kick start my creative juices
– Get my tools ready, installed and play around with those I’m unfamiliar with.
– Streaming, I have to decide if I want to stream or timelapse. I may jump between the two depending on lag.

2) Planning
– Environment, Unity or Flash
– Sketching
– Find the fun
– Identify that attention grab factor
– Plan my Time

3) Design
– Characters, sketch main guys
– Level, sketch the environment theme
– Game mechanics, prototype it
– Sounds, Grab something basic, if I run out of time it can stay.

4) implementation
– Prototype mechanics
– get assests in
– Make UI reusable if I decide to scrap stuff the UI can be reused (i.e mute)
– get sound early on

So that’s basically my plan and its pretty straight forward.
