In for the third time!

This will be my third LD entry.  Last time I made an ARG, the time before that I made a 3D stealth game, and this time I think I will make a retro 2D platformer (Maybe a metroidvania?  We’ll see), and I will be using Phaser as my engine.

Tools:
Engine: Phaser (on top of javascript and Pixi)
Editor: Atom
Map editor: Tiled
Graphics: GIMP, Paint, maybe AseSprite
Audio: Ableton

I forked a really awesome starter project on Github. It has live browser reloading and uses ES2017 features like the new  Javascript class syntax. I’ve added some classes to for player control and map loading, so I don’t have to waste any time when I kick off.

This is my repo, where I have my starter code checked in. Happy jamming, everyone!

Done early!

Woo! I finished early!

The game’s not exactly what you might expect… to beat it you’ll have to do a few surprising things.  I won’t spoil it any more than that until I get some good feedback.  Good luck.

Compo or Jam?

My game is basically ready, aside from maybe tweaking the music a bit and adding a favicon to the site.

But the question is, should I enter the Compo or the Jam?  My game is very subversive (I think it’s really interesting) and I did all of the programming, assets and music myself.  Can anybody help me with this question?

In for something weird

This will be my second LD, and I’m all-in.

Last time I made a 3d game in Unity3D.  But this time, I want to go big.  I’m going to try and create something really unique.  I’m thinking one of the following:

  • GPS enabled HTML5 game that requires you to get outside with your smartphone
  • A game initiated by using your real-life phone and calling a number
  • An Alternative Reality Game that spans multiple forms of media (websites, Twitter feeds, phone numbers)
  • A story-driven game mostly played in a command-line
  • Some or all of the above

I will be using Node.js and HTML, along with the Google Places, Trello, and some other APIs.  I will probably use Heroku for hosting and MongoDB for any database needs.

If I can’t think of a good idea that is along the lines of what I outlined above, I’ll make another 3d game in Unity.  This time I’ll focus more on creating a mood with my visuals and music.

Starting Over…

So I messed up.  I was going to make a game like The Fantastic Contraption, but in 3d.  But it’s not working out… I can’t figure out some things like creating and aligning proper hinge joints at runtime in Unity, and I’ve wasted hours on this, my teammates are all busy this weekend so I’ve been totally stuck on this alone since around hour 2.  So I’m starting over and am going to try and do something else, hopefully simpler… wish me luck.
