LD48 #30 entry – Mushroom Connects

Finally, I had time! This is my first entry for actual LD48 compo.

Mushroom Connects (between worlds) – an RPG (boring as hell, nothing interesting happens there) where you have to find a magical leaf to save all worlds. Yes, this mushroom was inspired by¬†psylocybin. And the so called “weird” world was also inspired by psychedelics (that flashing walkable tile has codename LSD, check XCFs ;p).

So little time as for an RPG, so I used single layer (because I had no time for map editor, everything done by hand). 40 sprites, one map, 3 sounds, 3 midis, even more images and a lot of code ;x. Also I had no time (and energy) to make all the corners and edges of the map. But still if I had 2-3 days more, I would make it an actual game engine.

This time a booooooring RPG

So, when I saw the theme I instantly knew: I must make RPG.

Fired up Eclipse and GIMP yesterday, making, making and making.

No time for map editors – single layered map with awful merged sprites is enough (I will think about graphical improvements in the end) ;p.

First entry ever submitted

So, I submitted a “not-actually-demake-but-tries-to-be-retro-style” game. Took me actually less than 48h.

Used: Eclipse with JDK7, GIMP, sfxr.

Why did I do this? When I heard about LD, I thought that only “pros” can do a game in 48h. I wanted to take part in December compo, but I had uni stuff to do. However, now I took part in MiniLD and… I’m fascinated. I created a game, simple, but playable (buggy ;d). Even with sounds (I forget about it too often). What’s more, now I have something worth to put into my portfolio (no matter which place I get) ;p. No matter what you create, you train both skills and creativity. (Still I think, I should practice more, by comparing myself to others [very bad].)

(Stuff in bold is about motivation for readers ;p).

What next? Maybe, I’ll port this to JavaME/Android.

First day passed

Okay, today I focused on gameplay and graphics as probably anyone who develop. I used a bash script to take screenshots every 20 seconds, which I will use to make a timelapse video. For now I have about 750 PNGs. 750/3 = 250 minutes = over 4 hours. I decided the game to be more Bezerk-like (which will not actually be a demake).

Preview of current state

So, Windowses are here normal robots which actually can’t be destroyed, but can be paralyzed for some time. Apple is of course “the Evil Otto”.

Maybe my first ever LD

Hey there,
I’m fcpfoof and I’m first year student at Jagiellonian University in Cracow. So, I wanted to take part in any LD since October. Unfortunately, I always had a lot of work and study to do :/.
That’s enough about me ;p.
But today I want to take part in MiniLD 50.
What kind: Bezerk/Binding of Isaac(?)
Platform: JavaSE.
My tools: Linux Mint, Eclipse, Firefox, GIMP, sfxr (works under Wine), Audacity, maybe Inkscape.

Android Puzzlebot – the inspiration

Let’s say I started on 21st March at 12:00 PM. So I should submit what I got on 23rd March at 12:00PM. Challenge accepted.
