Ludum Dare 36 post mortem

ugggggggggggggggggggggggg, another failed ludum dare: 4 submitted, 2 not submitted (wow 2 years or something close):

my thoughts through out the process:

Initially I planed on using libgdx and java with a 2d game. Seemed to work pretty well for me in the past so why not do it again. 6pm I found out the theme on the website and went out for some of the night. when I got back I started to familiarize myself with the theme of “Ancient Technology”. I was jotting down Ideas and a boat battling/boat ramming game popped into my head. Easy to do right? well why not make it a Virtual Reality game! So I was trying to find out more information on how to do it with the different libraries. I found a libgdx extension for google cardboard that renders everything the way it should! Great now how do I run it. Well I need libgdx version 1.7.1, crap its not up to date…would It still work? no…ok well could I downgrade libgdx, no…grrr ok whats next, well on google’s cardboard website it mentions unity. So, Unity it is! I have worked with c# before in a class and its very similar to java in syntax so why not use it. OK I have a new engine and a different language. How do I make the assets, blender? crap another thing I have to learn in 48 hours. Oh well seems fun! I get a decent looking boat model going and decide its good enough. So I begin to code. at this point its about 6am and I head off to bed, wake up the next day and start coding! by the time I went to bed I pretty much made 0 progress. The only progress I made was putting the boat on the scene and a functional camera movements. I want the boat to move with the camera Though…seems easy but was not at all given I am new to unity it wasnt. I had to work on my homework sunday and didnt get to work on it at all. I managed to fix it monday when I got back to it, it took probably 20 minutes to do what I wanted…I never finished it but now I might get honors credit for my class when I finish the game.

Hello all again! I will be participating in another ludum dare! I do not have much time to write this post because I am doing homework so I can work through the full 48 hours. It does sadden me that they will not be rated by the fellow ludum dareites but It is whatever. Depending on how well this game goes, I might actually be able to use it for a class so yay!

  • graphics: Photoshop or paint.net
  • engine: libgdx
  • sound: hopefully
  • language: Java

Ok, this is my 4th ludum dare im competing in. here are some stats:

completed: I have completed 2 out of the 3 i participated in.

engine: libgdx again(4th time)

graphics: Paint.net

graphics theme: i was going to go for a monocolor pixel type game.

statistically I have not done that bad in past compos, my highest catagory was graphics of my last game which was something like 600th, so not horrible but definitly not too good.

hopefully no physics engine, but you never know!

Get a good timelapse of my time working!

complete the game!

have a nice art theme!

Stretch: have sound effects and music!

One more weekend one more Ludum Dare! (I’m in!)

Sumo Si-post mortem

Sumo Si – the bumpin game

I was really busy this last weekend and unfortunately could not sit down for the entire weekend and do what I love, make video games! Find my game here!

Tools used:

  • Libgdx (Java game library with free type font extra)
  • paint.net (Graphics)
  • Eclipse Luna (Java IDE)

The good:

  • Completed game in around 8 hours
  • no crashing errors
  • a “high score” that is really just a win counter
  • somewhat realistic physics
  • simple and efficient user interface

the bad:

  • lack of time
  • not very good controls
  • the “high score” is a total win counter
  • do not need to touch the controls to win
  • no type of story
  • no sound effects or audio

Overall I would say this is a pretty decent effort for my second Ludum Dare ever given that I was only able to work on it for about 8-9 hours! If I could redo this game I would make it a more single player based game and not a game that looks like it should be played by two players. Should I polish(include several different opponents and a single player campaign and “upgrades)” it up and send it into the google play store! (more…)

First Ludum Dare wooh exciting!

So this is an exciting journey to start with. Phew so many nerves about the theme. What if i did not like it? Well I do like the theme of CONEected worlds. There are some tools I will be using available to everybody of course:

plot: Two worlds collide (obviously) one of the light human regular earth species and another of the weird species of WHAT traffic cones? ewww weird those are strange.
