Most of the actual gameplay pretty much done, tomorrow is reserved for polishing, testing and especially sound and music.

Looking forward to tomorrow, I hope I won’t be too hungover. :)

“Incomplete” Postmortem

Incomplete was my second LD entry and the first to the jam.
I worked together with my brother on this. He did the graphics, me the code and audio.
Together we worked out the concept for the game and tested it (at least a little).

What went right:
– Working with my brother: It was almost a perfect balance of workload between us and he is just so much better at creating graphics than I alone will ever be.
– Having a friend over: He participated in the compo and it was very refreshing and exciting to see each other progress and help out sometimes.
– Some distraction: Bowling, playing cards, smoking hookah together – clears your head and I really couldn’t sit in front of the monitor all day for three days straight.
– Using Construct 2: Using a game creation software I became very familiar with was relaxing, although it required some effort to create the foundation for making a point and click adventure with it.

What went wrong:
– Not thinking the concept through: Our first concept was to create 5 games in one game, mainly really tiny minigames and one adventure screen. Unfortunately the mingames were pretty unfun, so we kicked them out and decided to go for a pure point and click adventure.
– Making a point and click adventure: Well, other genres just offer more fun and interactivity with less effort. Especially the lots of graphics were very time-consuming.
– Appointments on the final day: I had to go to the dentist, my brother to university. Since we met at our parents house for the jam, we both had to travel some distance there and lost valuable hours.
– No experience in creating music: It took quite some time and the result really isn’t that good.
– Time spent on graphics: My brother said he spent a lot of time on single small graphics and sometimes less time on the important ones.

Overall, it was a very fun experience again. We both learned a lot and are looking forward to playing and rating many of the games created and of course to LD29.

Greetings and have a nice day!

First time I recorded myself, so it’s kinda disturbing to see this for me. It looks like I punch myself in the face all the time. ^^

Finally! “Incomplete” is more or less completed!

It turned out pretty good I think. I’ll go to bed now…after 3 days of fun and work and a visit to the dentist I’m pretty exhausted.

Here is the link and a screenshot, postmortem and timelapse tomorrow or the day after.

Day one over

It was a pretty good day. We went Bowling and had a friend over at our house who also takes part in LD28, but is soloing. We finished the whole story and concept (which was drastically changed a few hours ago, but now we’re satisfied with it, went from some overambitious Minigames-Puzzle-Adventure-Mashup to pure Point’n’Click). We also managed to finish almost half of all the graphics and maybe a third of the gameplay, the rest is due tomorrow. Our game is called “Incomplete” (I really wanted to do a BSB-Cover for the soundtrack, but couldn’t get it to sound good, how come? ^^), here are the titlescreen and a work-in-progress ingame screen:

We’re totally in!

This will be my second LD and the first one where I’ll team up with my brother, who is gonna do some fabulous art.

We will use Construct 2 for the game itself, Photoshop for the graphics, LMMS/bfxr/Audacity for audio, Metal/VG/Classic music to keep our spirits up and a hookah now and then for relaxation.

Hoping to create something more polished than last time, but that shouldn’t be too hard to do as a team.

Good luck, have fun and have cookies everyone!

Going on vacation tomorrow…

…and won’t be back until voting ends. LD27 was a great experience for me and I learned a lot from it. I tried to play/rate/comment as many games as possible in the short period of time. Have a good time playing all these awesome games and I’m really curious to see the results when I come back.

Run, Panda, Run!

I already submitted the game last night to the 48h-compo, but just couldn’t resist going to sleep afterwards, so I’m writing about it today.

I had a lot of fun during the LD and also learned much, but it was also more exhausting than I thought, although I at least tried to keep a normal sleeping schedule.

For the next LD, I will try not to drink too much right before it (was really tired on the first day ^^) and prepare better, especially considering my sounds/music/graphics skills.

My game is a top-down shooter featuring a 10 second timeframe, upgrades and a mad, cat-slaying panda on the run. The game could use a lot more polishing, but I’m still very proud of it and I think it’s pretty fun. Enjoy and good luck to all who are still going!

Y so serious, mr. panda?

You are surrounded by deadly adorable cats, so cheer up a bit, will you?

Almost 8 hours left and a couple of things still to do: Music, some sounds, a proper boss and testing/balancing mainly.

First day over…

… and still soooo much to do: Graphics, HUD, sounds, music, variety and so on, but at least the basic gameplay is there (and some blood ^^). Gonna go to bed now, it’ll be a busy day tomorrow.

…getting started. What I imagine at the moment is a panda slaying lots of cats while being on the run. Let’s see how that evolves. ^^

Music suggestion to everyone: Type “Touhou” at youtube and listen to the rock/metal playlist, it’s superawesome to listen to while developing games.

If it’s gonna be jam or compo depends on how much time my brother will have. Tools I (or we) will be using: Construct 2, Inkscape and maybe GIMP/Paint.NET, for sounds/music I’ll try playing around a little with bfxr and iNudge. This is gonna be my first LD ever and my second gamejam overall and I’m really looking forward to it.
