Hi everyone,

We just released a final version of our game from the Ludum Dare 33 jam (theme You Are the Monster). It is narrative, choice-consequence game set in a post-apocalyptic world.

Since the jam we did a lot of polish work and bug fixing, as well as completely redoing all the art.

You can play it for free on itch.io: https://alicerendell.itch.io/the-monster-in-me

Hey All,

Would like to play some of the narrative/story-driven games that people made. I know there are some lists about so either post them in the comments or post your game there. Also if you are interested in narrative games you can play our entry The Monster In Me.

So thought we’d wait a bit to post about the game to avoid the flood right after the jam submission. The game is done, as in isn’t broken done, but didn’t get anywhere near as much polish as we would of liked in it unfortunately.

About the game

The Monster In Me is a narrative game based in a world where societies rules are no longer relevant. Is a bad act really bad if you are doing it to help those you love? The Monster In Me explores these types of moral choices in a unsettled world where humanity and society are no longer what they were.

The submission is here.

You can play it here.

So today we integrated the story and started putting in some artwork. Still a lot more to do tomorrow but should be ok for the compo deadline tomorrow. Here’s a screenshot.

So today has been long. Took a while to come up with the right idea that fits the engine we’re using, the theme and the time limit, but finally I think we’re on to something.

Now to actually make the thing…

Phew! We just managed to make it. There were lots of things we hoped to get done in time but didn’t such as a proper walk animation (because at the moment he moonwalks^^), better art assets and more levels, but you get a really good feel of the game and idea from what we’ve done. Post mortem to come soon.

End of day 1

So at the end of day 1 we have actually made some good progress. We have a level editor where you can place platforms/doors and keys of different colours and the collisions are working with the good colour matching (so far), so if the character is yellow he does go through a yellow door as planned:

In addition to this we have about 8 levels designed (couple of examples below):

We also have the character drawn in various colours:

Good night!

So far…

So we have our main concept: it is a level based platformer in which the character must meet the right visual condition to enter a door and complete the level (right colour/pattern etc.), there is one static level which is replayed with different conditions each time.

The guys are working away on the first milestone which is having a  basic level with platforms and collisions. Meanwhile I have been specifying the conditions/puzzles for the first levels and working on the character design:

We’re in for the game jam. There are 3 of us all together, 2 developers (Pierre-Olivier and Hugues) and a game designer/artist (me, also known as Alice).

We’ll be using HaXe and Photoshop but this is the first time we’ve collaborated together so there will be a lot of learning points and seeing how things go.

Good luck everyone!
