Gameplay is pretty much all set. It’s simple, but that gives me lots of time for the rest of the jam to make some cool art and visual effects. Latest (visible) changes is a nice meter on the top of the screen to measure your sugar instead of a boring number.

Gameplay is starting to come together

You can get shit and scores and combos can change.

Not very entertaining yet but I’m working on it.

I’m trying to leave a LOT more time for graphics and sound than I did in my last game, by making the game concept itself a bit simpler. Because, (if all goes well) the main appeal of this game will be that it looks nice and has lots of graphic juice.

So I’m finally really getting started, which is a bad sign considering¬†we’re almost halfway done AND I need to stop early this dare. But we’ll see.

In this game you’re going to control a giant skull that devours candy and good things while avoiding something I haven’t really decided. You can’t move but you can use one button to grow larger and one to grow smaller.

I just finished the growing and shrinking and also the spawning of different items (although they don’t interact with you yet)

Next up is making meaningful gameplay states (doing well or doing poorly)

After that making things spawn in interesting patterns

Then we’ll try to see how good we can make it look and feel before time’s up.

This will be the first time I’ve done two Ludum Dares in a row. Should be cool. I might have to do a jam because I have some scheduling conflicts, and in fact, I may only be able to work for a small fraction of the time. But I want to see what I can do.

Continuing to work on graphics and graphical tweaks, and doing a few gameplay tweaks.

Once (most) of the graphics are done i’m on to level design. And also sound. Don’t think I’ll have time for music but I will make a few minimal sound effects for atmosphere and UI help.

 

Here’s the heads of the main character (nobody) and the six victims.

I’ve had to squish my idea down to more of an adventure game than a stealth one but I think having different choices and trying to impersonate people you kill will still be fun.

Working on graphics now. I’m going to be using very simple pixel art, because I really don’t think I’m gonna have time for anything else. That’s ok though, I think it looks good enough that players won’t want to kill themselves while moving around.

 

More than the pixel art right now, i’m working on stuff like screen size, text placement, camera scroll speed and distance, etc. to make sure that it works. I’m pretty happy with that right now.

Ok, I’ve got a fairly firm idea for my game now.

The working title is All for One. In this game, a group of people are trapped (not sure where yet. Stuck in the woods? Trapped in a building?) and with them is a doppelganger. The doppelganger is killing people one at a time and taking their forms. The people must find out who the doppelganger is, and either kill or escape them.

 

Of course, you are the doppelganger. You have to pick who to kill. Whenever you kill someone, you become them. Other NPCs may ask you questions to determine if you really are who you’re pretending to be. You need to fool them.

Currently you can walk around and start conversations with people. The conversations can advance but nothing really comes out of them. There is a plain-looking but functional text log that can hold events that have happened for your review.

This is my ‘todo’ list right now. Very simple. I will probably be expanding it as I proceed, as I realize more of the individual items and what they are. For now, I’m gonna take a break, but try to get a little more done tonight after I fuck around and play games for a bit.

i am going to use stencyl, a bad engine for bad people, because i don’t know any real programming. not on a game development level.

i have done two ludumdare events before this. i have made several games in and out of ludumdare but they are all bad.
