I’m out (and not happy about it)

It’s 15 hours left and I’m FAAAR from something playable. That’s my cue to surrender. To be honest most of it is my fault. I didn’t plan this Ludum Dare very well. When the theme was announced I hadn’t even decided on what language to use. I’ve been switching back and forth and trying different ideas, and wasted almost half of day 1 on that.

I potentially COULD get a playable version of my current idea by tonight, but I got other things I have to do as well, and I think the stress and exhaustion won’t be worth it, since I probably wont be that pleased with the final result.

I might submit something if I get a brilliant idea that I can make in maybe 3-4 hours, but that’s unlikely.

Happy Ludum Dare to the rest of you! I’ll still play plenty of submissions.

After the frustrating first hours of the day, I now have a solid idea, and will hopefully be able to finish it.

This is how it looks right now. I got a lot to do still, but I think I’ll manage it. Programming is my strong suite after all ­čśë

Yes, that’s right! It’s a typing/console game! I think it might turn out ok at least. My biggest concern right now: How do you tutorial this kind of game? I want the tutorial to be integrated into the game, but I don’t have a lot of time, I still have the basic game mechanics┬áto implement.

Worst case scenario┬áthere will be a Wall-Of-Text tutorial, but that’s no fun.

Maybe the tutorial should be very minimalist, and you have to figure things out by yourself? This can lead to some frustration with the player though, especially since most players don’t play a Ludum Dare game for more than maybe 10-15 minutes. Hmmm… I’ll have to think more about this later.

I’m seriously considering giving up on this one. I haven’t even got player input working yet, and I’m not even sure if my idea is going to work out.

Alternatively I can change the concept to a different kind of game.

I got my world generation code working, giving results such as this:


It is generated using a diamond-square algorithm. It doesn’t look like much right now, but I think I can turn this into something. I just hope I have enough time. Even if I’m not able to make a working game in time that’s ok, because I just ordered a pizza, so that’s a win!

I’ve been struggling with ideas, and I’m thinking of scrapping the one I currently have and make something simpler in the time I have left. I like the idea, but I won’t be able to reach the level I want to with it, I think I’ll have to figure out something else.

That’s right, I’m in! It’s my 7th Ludum Dare, and I’m doing it differently this time. Instead of going with the old Java and OpenGL binding, I’m using a proper game engine,┬áUnity! Haven’t used it much, but I think it will be fun.

Besides Unity I will be using Paint.NET for textures and sprites, maybe┬áBlender (haven’t decided if I want 3D or not) and┬ásfxr. Not sure if there will be any music.

Finally, my game They Dug To Deep is finished. I won’t write much about it, there’s some information on the game page, and a post mortem will be written at a later stage. For now, enjoy the game here.

The game is fully working now, in that all the gameplay and features are in. There’s however a lot of visual stuff left, like menus for example. Audio is also on the to-do list. I really wonder how much I will be able to do with the time and energy I got left.

After an entire day of development I’m very tired. The time is 01:09 here in Sweden right now, and I’m stopping for today. I got almost all the gameplay and content done.

Tomorrow I will mainly try to improve the graphics, and if there’s time I will make some nicer menus, add sound, and iron out some minor bugs. I will probably not have the time to do any of this, as always, but I will try. Maybe I should take one more day and submit it as a jam entry. What do you think???

Some feedback on wether I should submit it as a jam entry or compo entry is appreciated, since it’s a difficult choice for me.

Anyway, I am going to bed now, really tired. See you tomorrow! Good night!
