2D vs 3D

I have been wondering lately, what are advantages and disadvantages of 2D and 3D games. For some reason all my previous Ludum Dare games are 2D. Just because of that, I will make a 3D game this time. These are my thoughts on 2D and 3D differences, please add yours as well.

  1. It’s harder to make basic stuff like player controller¬†and camera control (if ¬†you are not using Unity or similar programs).
  2. It takes more time to make appealing graphics (depends on style honestly, but it should be harder in general because of extra dimension).
  3. There are more game mechanics possibilities.

  1. Smoother game look and less unexpected camera point views or glitches.
  2. Takes less time to make a game.
  3. Animations takes much less time to make, therefore 2D animations are better.

I feel like I am missing a lot of stuff, but I just could not figure out what it is.

It seems like majority of games in¬†Ludum Dare are 2D, I wonder if that’s because of lack of practice or personal preference.

I will be participating for my 7th time this time :). I am so excited for this one! Someone just give me a theme, I want to make a game NOW!!!

Technical stuff that I will be using:

  1. Unity
  2. Blender
  3. Paint.net
  4. Photoshop (if needed)
  5. And the most important thing РBRAIN POWER by NOMA

My votes for themes:

Round 1: Votes

Round 2: Votes

This time I will try to make a game with my beloved low poly minimalistic art style, what do you think about this piece:

This time i have no idea what I¬†am going to, not even thinking about themes. Also¬†I¬†will have very little amount of time this weekend. I don’t know if I¬†will finish in time. Anyway, I hope to have fun and make a game this weekend. Good luck for every participant!

BTW, i am going to use Unity 5.

I’m in.

I’m in for my fourth time. From my experience, I can say that Ludum Dare is all about quality, not quantity. Ludum Dare entry should be completed in 10 minutes, and that’s maximum. ¬†Only entries with unique mechanics (Superdimensional is my favorite Ludum Dare game of all time), or unbelievably amazing graphics can be noticed. So, this week I will try to improve my graphics making skills (I believe you can learn how to do unique game mechanics only with time (not one week :) ) )

Themes also looking very promising (Isolation is my favorite), and new page design is much more better than old one. I probably missed something, but why people create so many Ludum Dare backgrounds (I love them all)?

Tools I will be using:

1) Unity3D 4.5.5

2) Blender (if I decide to make 3D game)

3) Photoshop CS6

4) Ableton Live 9 (I am not very skilled at making music, but what I make is better than random generated music)

5)Free Countdown Timer (To watch every second I wasted watching to timer)

Good luck to all of you!

It’s my third Ludum Dare, and it’s first time when i was using Unity3D. I was very excited about this one, ¬†not whole weekend was free for me, but when i was not in my home, i was creating ideas. The idea of this game was much more explanded than it is now, as always i try make too big game in 48 hours.

“Virtuoso” ludum dare page

Virtuoso screenshot:

What went wrong:

  • Graphics. In this kind of game i really do not need tons of graphics, but i just ran out of time.
  • Ideas. I had so much more ideas about story, mechanics, but i spend too much time on not that important mechanics.
  • Animations. Game have only few animations, but i planned to do lot of them to make good game feel, but once again, i had no time.
  • Music. I used generators, then edited it, but it was not what i wanted. Anyway, in my other games i have even worse music, so this one is not that bad for me.

What went right:

  • I can’t say main mechanics is very good, but it’s what i was expecting.
  • Game story. It’s not very good, but i never had any kind of story in my other games, so i am proud of it.
  • Sound effects. Personally, i love those sound effects, have no idea how to describe it, so just try it :) .

Not good as i expected, but better than ever before. Waiting for Ludum Dare 31 and going to play all other games made in Ludum Dare 30!

Ready for best weekend ever!
